According to Twitch, Chinese superstar Any Lau (Infernal Affairs, House Of The Flying Daggers) may be joining the growing cast of Shane Black's Iron Man 3. The site report that a very reliable source within Disney informs them that the movie's Chinese backers are keen to have a big Chinese name attached to the movie, and Any Lau is the man they want.

But before you jump to Manadrin shaped conclusions, it seems that should Lau accept the role he will not be playing the comic book villain widely believed to be Tony Stark's nemesis this time around. According to Twitch..

Word is that Lau (or whoever finally lands the role) would play a good guy - a Chinese scientist who comes to the aid of his old buddy Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) by providing him with some new tech that will help him battle Ben Kingsley's villain, but more importantly Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) and his Extremis biotechnology.

Lau is one of Hong Kong's most commercially successful actors, and a great talent so I hope he does sign up for this. Last night it was reported that Jessica Chastain might be joining the cast, and both Ben Kingsley and Guy Pearce are also said to be on board. Not bad eh? More news on this as we have it.

The Mandarin's appearance will be as much of a mystery as the aliens in The Avengers

Sounds like an interesting role. Yes, I was kind of expecting him to be The Mandarin...but, a Chinese scientist could be an interesting addition.

This will make up for that disappointment 'Iron Man 2'. This movie is going to be amazingly good. It has to be.

As long as they show the Ten Rings organization and keep the head of the order a secret I'll be happy, if there's no Mandarin at all.

Just don't omit the possibility of having a Mandarin.

@Fogs i agree, as much as im looking forward to this and it has everything going for it with director, cast, story i hope they dont just abandon the ten rings connection. if they choose not to involve the mandarin i could accept that (just dont try to mix 2 villains again) but after all the hints and easter eggs in Iron man 1&2 i would like them to carry on that aspect in some form or another

I wouldn't hold out any hope of seeing The Mandarin in thsi..or any Iron man movie. At least not as he appears in the comics. Even if you don't personally find the character racist, many do..and the Chinese DEFINITELY do. Since they are backing the movie and it's being shot there, fuhget about it.

Couldn't they just be telling us that he's not playing The Mandarin just to cover up the fact that he actually IS playing The Mandarin? What is that called? A red herring or something?

I believe Iread one of the comments on a thread like this saying they could possibly bring in the Mandarin as an old scientist buddy of Tony's and then have him turn on Tony when they discover the Ten Rings after the whole fight with Mallen

And notice that they never denied he was playing the Mandarin, just that he was playing a scientist

well..he does look more menacing than Chow Yun Fat. but, if he plays a good guy..a la Shaun Toub's Yinsen, i'd be rather disappointed.

like jet li in lethal weapon 4, andy would make a much better villain than sidekick. he'd stand out MORE as a baddie than another boring non-caucasian 'assistant' to tony.

now on The Mandarin, how about making the guy this charming, boastful genius..another Tony Stark, only he's chinese..and evil. for this task, i can see a cupla JAPANESE actors tackling it. Hiroyuki Sanada (TV's Revenge and Tom Cruise's Last Samurai) or the heartthrob, Takeshiro something (forgot his name, but, he's in House of Flying Daggers, with ziyi zhang).

Just re-watched IM2 last night (in preps for glory on May 4th). The franchise can go nowhere but up in my opinion. Man that movie has problems.

Why is having a Chinese man playing a Chinese villain racist, but having a British man playing a Chinese villain is okay?
mrHJK
mrHJK - 4/24/2012, 7:14 AM
@ClarkFarley2012: Because white people are so worried about being called racists; they get offended and try to be way over PC (way more than the people of the actual race)

I don't think the way he's portrayed in the recent comics is racist. Now in the early days? Yeah, probably. When he was involved in the Extremis story line he was a rival businessman. Thy could kind of go that route. But to not have Iron Mans arch nemisis in the Iron Man Triolgy is blasphamey.

I'm a Chinese ....i really don't mind having a Chinese playing Chinese villain besides i know Mandarin is one of the classic character from Iron man...and as long as there're some Chinese supporting cast who is not a villain....n I'm sure Andy Lau is a perfect choice!

I've long suspected that the Mandarin's rings in the MCU would be linked to the Infinity Gems, which of course would help to set up Thanos for Avengers 2.

I bet he is someone familiar with the Mandarin legend that Tony uses to help fight him. It seem pretty clear that the Mandarin is the villain (or at least one we migh get the "Champagne Villain" too like Justin Hammer and Obadiah stain) and that Shane Black has either changed his mind, been told by Marvel to change it, they onvinced him that he doesn't need to be racist propoganda, or the fans swayed him because we have all said from the beginning that's who we want.

Bet he's Arnold Brock. I think this will tell the "origin" of the Mandarin. It may have him at the end but he won't be the big bad of the film. I think they'll have Mandarin actually be one of Tony's friends to make it more personal. This is what I would like to happen:

Iron Man 3

-Mallen a Stark employee steals the prototype "extremis" and gives it to himself, the result of a wide arrange of powers. Being alerted Tony confronts him but Mallen defeats Tony easily and escapes, Tony's armor is severely damaged. Tony reunites with an old archaeological friend of his Arnold Brock who is in search of "ten rings" of the Manderin. Already having two of the rings (Stane's and Hammer's rings?), he asks Tony's help because of him being captured by the Ten Rings, his genius, and his father had started research as well of the ten rings. Tony accepts and continues the search for Mallen. Tony finds a temple but the Ten Rings capture Tony's group (consisting of: Arnold Brock, Pepper Potts, and himself). Mallen is revealed to be a Ten Rings member who was to infiltrate and steal "Extremis" for the Ten Rings, they plan to make soliders for the Manderin using "Extrmis". The Ten Rings force Tony to work for them to find the rings for them and mass produce "Extrmis". Tony "agrees" to do this and starts making another suit for himself basing it off of "Extrmis". Tony finds where the remaining 8 rings and a purple gem. Then reveals his new suit and defeats Mallen. While Tony is fighting Mallen, Arnold Brock puts on the ten rings revealing himself to be the true Manderin. Arnold tells Tony he was the one giving Stane and Hammer orders. Originally he wanted Stane to capture Tony to find the rings but the Ten Rings leader double crossed him not believing in the Manderin legend and only wanting Stark to build his missiles. Arnold also reveals that he intended Hammer to wreck Stark financially so that he would be forced to work for Brock Corporations. Arnold also reveals he is working for someone beyond Stark's imagination and no matter what he can't stop him. Arnold and Tony fight. Arnold forces Tony up against the temple and asks: "You can't stop me Tony. Do you really think you are equal to the Manderin's power?" Tony: "Nope, mine's better!" Tony just releasing an arc reactor blast. Arnold realizing Tony is is match, he teleports away using the purple gem. Tony realizes this is just the beginning of something. After credits scene: Manderin bows before Thanos giving him the purple gem.

You know who's a racist character? Lex Luthor. As IF every evil business man was American! The nerve!

There is NO WAY this is the last Iron Man movie. We'll see the Mandarin yet.

Hope they keep the fights in the movie like they were in the extremes comic. The fights with Mallen were brutal and fantastic.
