Robert Downey Jr. Dishes On Iron Man 3, Director Shane Black And Jon Favreau!

Recently speaking with the L.A. Times' Hero Complex, 'Tony Stark' actor Robert Downey Jr. discussed his reprisal in the forthcoming Iron Man 3 movie. Ultimately dishing on the transition from previous director of the franchise, Jon Favreau, to it's new helmer, Shane Black, check out what Downey had to say.

On returning for the third installment...
“My sense of it is that we need to leave it all on the field — whatever that means in the end,” Downey said of the May 2013 film. “You can pick several different points of departure for that.”

On Shane Black's directorship and their Kiss Kiss Bang Bang connection...
“The thing about Shane is that it will be anything but one of those moments,” Downey said, ”unless we come up with something that is so cheeky and character-driven and perfect that it has to be in the movie.”

“He’s more than the sum of his parts and he’s also kind of been a sleeper for a long time,”
Downey said. “We’re not talking much about [the script] right now because Shane is off writing and we talked before that and when we are talking again the talking is going to be over pretty quick [because we're on the same page]. It’s kind of like we’re fighting on the same side and at the same time we’re circling each other, so it’s all great. It should be great.”

On the transition from Jon Favreau's directorship...
”Bringing in Shane Black to write and direct ‘Iron Man 3′ to me is basically the only transition from Favreau to a ‘next thing’ that Favreau and the audience and Marvel and I could ever actually sign off on,” Downy said. With a grin he added: “The fun thing is going to be getting Happy in the movie.”

While the site indicates that Downey has wrapped filming The Avengers, under Shane Black's direction, Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Pictures has Iron Man 3 slated for theaters May 3, 2013!

Iron Man is Marvel studios biggest cash cow so far (we'll see if Avengers makes butt loads of money) hopefully they do have a script that's as good as 1 without just mimicking it.

I thought 2 was entertaining and ok, but wasn't anything amazing or mind bending.

Ghost would make a good villain, he has been good in the Thunderbolts books.

So if he's "wrapped" on Avengers, and they're shooting the climatic finale of the Avengers in Cleveland, then does that mean Iron Man will not be there for the finale? Or is he not needed because Iron Man is CGI?

Discuss....

oh ya, where the [frick] is Intruder?

@capcyclopsftw Iron Man may be in a different location, the mother ship, or Loki's lair, with Thor, or other Avengers, while Cap and the street level heroes fight the ground invasion.

If thats the case, they would shoot his stuff on a sound stage away from people with cellphone cams.

What does he mean the fun part will be getting Happy in the movie? Is Favreau still steamed about getting let go?

I don't get the pure disdain for IM2. I liked it.

@soberchimera61- Favreau is still going to play Happy Hogan in the IM series. I love it when people get along and don't talk bad about each despite things coming up in life that take them in different directions. It seems like people are starting to grow up!

I don't understand all the hate for IM2 especially considering that IM1 had plenty of issues itself, the entire third act springs to mind.

I hope the third one is more of the same, good action and good humour with characters I can give a [frick] about.

In all of this I admire Jon Favreau the most, RDJ went down in my estimations when he chose to blame JF for IM2's shortcomings.

Hopefully Mandarin will make an appearance in the third film, done in a creative way of course. Hoping Lt. James Rhodes/War Machine will return. He doesn't necessarily need to don his armor, though it would be nice to see another team-up.
