Robert Downey Jr. On Potential IRON MAN 3 Cameos

Apparently alluding to a cameo from one of his fellow Avengers, (or perhaps a nod to Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy), Tony Stark actor Robert Downey Jr. further discusses his role in Iron Man 3.

In continuity with yesterday’s first segment, of five, from their exclusive Q&A with the great Robert Downey Jr., Entertainment Weekly has now delivered the second part. This time the actor addresses whether fans should expect a cameo from Tony Stark’s fellow Avengers in Iron Man 3. In addition to EW claiming there’s “chatter” about Marvel sending Stark to the cosmos in their 2014 space epic, Guardians of the Galaxy, similar to the ongoing comic series, Downey says:

“The whole Avengers thing was such a relief & such a confirmation of Kevin Feige’s vision for this all along. As Kevin has put it, the next step after that is to bring in someone like Shane Black & – without pretending that Avengers don’t exist – find a way to go back to a kind of re-investigation of Tony’s world, which he thought would be, one, fun for the audience &, two, would rock in a different way than The Avengers. But we can’t help it; everywhere you look now in every Marvel movie there are opportunities where certain new pals of his could be useful. So they’re in the atmosphere, so to speak, but I wouldn’t expect to see them on the ground in this one.”

When pressed about whether there’s other projects he’d like to tackle beyond popcorn franchises, Downey goes on to say, “The nice thing about Marvel’s kind of unprecedented success is they are already able to do what Warners had done along, which is avoid that approach of beginning [a project by picking a release] date and working backwards from there. And by avoiding that you get a schedule where there’s more space. And, also, the smart money always says, Let’s wait a little longer and do a little better. When I first thought of what my world would be like if every other year I had to put out a product for more than one franchise, the thought was: Well how will I ever get to do anything else? But neither seems to be hurrying toward their deaths and still there’s space that allows the rest.” Head over to EW for the full second part of the interview.

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, & is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Marvel Studios will also release “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel (title TBA) on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

maybe a Guardians cameo? with the in the air comment? I agree with @ComicsCommando nothing suggests him being in GotG.

You guys gotta stop reading just the quotes.

@ComicsCommando (In fact, there’s a lot of chatter that Marvel may send Stark back to the far ends of the cosmos as a cast member in the 2014 film Guardians of the Galaxy.)

I know, that isn't a big deal, but there hasn't been any "chatter" about it elsewhere. I'll delete it though as I'm sure many will feel that way.

Cool, but I hope Marvel doesn't put him in the GOTG. It doesn't need him.

I know Iron Man is close to being Marvel's most popular character but they need to concentrate on making other characters popular as well. Perhaps if they catch on, even MORE popular than him.

I bet the Guardians will cameo in IM3 in the end with him flying up to a space ship, and the door opens. Rocket Raccoon is holding a giant gun to his face.

Having iron man in GOTG means that they are scared that there unfamiliar characters wont do well with regular movie goers, but they should just go for it

BlueHawaiiSurfer - 1/29/2013, 12:29 PM
Saying they should just "go for it" and backing that up with millions are two different things. GOTG, as much as WE all love it isn't like making Thor, Captain America, or something 90% of the people in the US has ever heard of. While fundamentally I agree with you, he should not be in it in any way, shape, or form...I can see why they would at least think about the inclusion of another more mainstream hero.

When RDJ says they are 'in the atmosphere' I took that to mean a hint that Thor, Loki and the Chitauri are common knowledge to the rest of earth.

I really do hope we don't get any cameos, well not until the end credit scenes. They've already done the Avengers so theres no need for a cameo from anyone and the fact that everyone seems to be in another country in there film it would make sense for them not to show up.

@mawilli4 Now that moment would be epic! RDJ: "My god, it's a talking Raccoon!".
Now seriously, a good part of the movie will be a reference to Avengers. I'm pretty sure Tony will joke about War Machine's painted resemblance to Captain America. The Mandarin itself says "heroes, there is no such thing" and if I remember correctly, New York's city Mayor sounded really pissed off in the news report after the climatic battle, blaiming the Avengers for such destruction, and being Tony the only one of the member who does not live in anonymity.

So they’re in the atmosphere, so to speak, but I wouldn’t expect to see them on the ground in this one.”

Actually to help out DCMarvelFreshman, while no there is no exact quote to say that GotG cameo's will occur the above quote kinda eliminates the characters we have seen so far. Reading between the lines with the actors in these movies is key. They aren't allowed to say anything but guys like RDJ love to insinuate. And with the constant chatter about him popping up in a certain movie next year as well I wouldn't be surprised. I'll let the GotG reference slide based off this quote.
