Who Should Direct Iron Man 3 ?

Like it or not Jon Favreau will not be directing Iron Man 3. Who do you think should replace him as director? Why?

By now, everyone reading this has probably heard the news that Jon Favreau has opted to be a bystander for the Iron Man 3 film. Reports are conflicted as to exactly why he made the decision not to direct the movie but the actual reason is of little consequence, the fact is someone else will be directing the film. Favreau has done a brilliant job directing the first two films in the franchise (probably more so with the original) and setting up Marvels Cinematic Universe. He stuck closely to the "tech" based theme for all of the characters used in the films and did a decidedly good job in making them believable to not only the fans but the general public as well.

The "tech based" theme used in the first two films could be at the bottom of his leaving the franchise but that is pure speculation on my part. He has stated many times that he had no idea how to go about bringing the magical aspects of Marvels Universe to life on screen. If, as reports suggest, The Mandarin is going to be the main villain in IM3 that would be exactly what he would have to do.

Regardless, Favreau has taken himself out of the picture. This of course, raises the question of who will replace him as director in the film. Marvel has a definite direction planned for all their movies. They will all be woven together with both overlapping Easter eggs and possible character cameos. That being said, many of the more established, well known and respected directors want no part of directing a movie that they have to worry about fitting together with another film they have no involvement in. Many directors simply don't want to be a part of a project with that many strings attached and I don't blame them.

So far, Marvel has used well known, established directors and they have also used up and coming directors such as Favreau (who was quite a surprise and controversial when announced for Iron Man). Knowing this, it would be almost impossible to guess which direction they will go in choosing Favreau's replacement, let alone narrowing it down to anyone specific.

This leads us to the topic of this article. Who do you think would be a good replacement for Favreau on the Iron Man 3 film and why? Will this director be available? Well known or up and coming, will he be able or willing to work within Marvels parameters? What makes him a goof fit in your opinion? Will he come from within Marvels existing fold or will he be completely new to the superhero game?

IBZ: Personally I have wanted to see JJ Abrams direct a CBM for a long, long time. He does a fantastic job with story, action and multiple characters. He also has absolutely no problem stepping into a franchise with an established fan base. I really wanted him for The Avengers but I think he would put Iron Man 3 over the top. He would be my first choice.

However, he is hot right now and may be out of Marvels desired price range.

I would very much prefer that Jon stay, and I had hoped originaly that this was nothing but romors, but it's now said and done. Chris Nolan actualy isn't that bad a choice. It's doubtful that he would have the time, but he would certainly keep that "real world" aproach. However, I don't know much about directors, so I'll leave than to the proffesionals who fired him in the first place.

totally brad bird could pull it off....he would keep the tone of the film along the lines of jon favs two films....its not like he has set the origin just tell another story as long as they keep key continuity

Anyone that works well with others because these marvel movies are attached to a marvel movie universe and as such they need to be almost a collaboration because they all tie together . It is not like anything that has been done before and marvel just does not get enough credit for trying something this big . And another thing the bigger the marvel movie universe gets the more people are going to get replaced it is just common sense and if we as fans of comic book movies want the marvel movie universe to expand than we should stop whining so much when some one gets replaced . The marvel movie universe needs to be bigger than any actor or director for this to work even if it is rdj . The only alternative is a continuing cycle of a few films than a reboot which sucks .

I think Kenneth Branagh should do it, he is bringing magic into Iron Man's world now so if the The Mandarin will be the villain I thing it would he could really pull it off.

if J.J. Abrams directed Iron Man 3, I can't say what I'd do, but it would be epic. The thought of him directing IM3 gives me chills already. What a brilliant director.

does anyone know Nolan ever had a "DC only" clause in his contract I wonder, preventing him from directing a Marvel movie? that would be interesting to find out.

Neill Blomkamp gets my first vote, too. (High Five, Ibz!) But Bird and Abrams are close seconds.

abrams is a great director but the guys got his handsful with producing, writing and directing other films. personally blomkamp fits marvels requirement they can get the guy at affordable price and he is relatively unknown and has never done a big franchise before like favreau when he started. even he dosent get picked then RDJ should direct IM3 yeah i said it, gareth edwards wouldnt be bad either

No one. I'm completely satisfied with Ironman 1 and 2, and now that they are making the Avenger movies it would be too much and besides how are you going to make a 3rd one without Fav. It would probobly suck.

JJ Abrams is a good shout or perhaps the Gore Verbinski who handled the Pirates of The Caribbean franchise with humour and action

Since Joss Whedon is already directing the Avengers, perhaps he'd be interested in taking the reins for Iron Man 3 as well.

I know it wont happen but my dream is for Guillermo Del Toro to direct.
Just to see his design for Fin Fang Foom & all the Mandarin stuff

ckirk8: I highly doubt that Marvel would hand Iron Man (a proven commodity) to Whedon until after they see how The Avengers turns out. They are taking a chance on him with The Avengers but they know that Iron Man is a pot of gold.

He may end up getting the job (and I'm not saying he shouldn't) but I have a feeling it will be after his first effort for them is released.
