During Iron Man's time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tony Stark donned a lot of unique armours. By the time Iron Man 3 rolled around in 2013, the hero had an entire Iron Legion which he ultimately pitted against Aldrich Killian and his Extremis-enhanced army of soldiers.
Now, thanks to Marvel Studios concept artist Phil Saunders, we have a closer look at one of them.
The Mark 40/XL armour was created specifically for the MCU, and nicknamed the "Shotgun" suit. It was a beast of an armour, but one which received only a few fleeting glimpses of screentime.
As Saunders explains, "this suit was designed for extreme speed. I worked it out so arms and legs would lock together to the torso to form a rigid fuselage, but sadly that functionality was never featured in the movie. It made for one of my favorite Hot Toys, though!"
