JUSTICE LEAGUE Star Jason Momoa Explains Why So Many Of Aquaman's Scenes Were Cut

Justice League delivered the bare bone versions of Aquaman, Cyborg, and the Flash, and now Jason Momoa has explained why exactly so many of Arthur Curry's scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

While Justice League did a solid enough job of introducing new characters like Aquaman, Cyborg, and the Flash, it's clear many of their scenes were cut. For example, Arthur Curry was supposed to visit Atlantis and spend some time with Vulko, Vic Stone's origin story would have been fully revealed, and the Flash was supposed to save Iris West. However, we didn't get to see any of that in the movie.

In a new interview, Jason Momoa weighed in on so much of Justice League ending up on the cutting room floor, explaining that it could have easily been a two-parter (which was the original plan) and that the scenes revolving around why Aquaman is the way he is will be tackled in the hero's solo movie.

"The challenging part is [the Justice League story] is only about a weekend in Author Curry’s life. [Fans] might be like, ‘Why is he that grumpy? Why’s he hiding up there?’ We had it all planned out. A lot of things got cut. But it’s not my movie. It’s a huge movie introducing three new characters, and for myself and The Flash and Cyborg, there was a lot that was there we just couldn’t get in. It could have been two movies. We had some stuff with William Dafoe. The whole Atlantean part, about me being this reluctant king. There was no need for it because you’re going to see it in Aquaman. It’s not an Aquaman movie, it’s a Justice League movie."

It's all well and good saving that stuff for James Wan's Aquaman but it doesn't really help Justice League and it definitely would have been good to spend some more time with the newer members of the team. Whether these scenes will end up on the Blu-ray remains to be seen but most will probably never be seen. That's a shame but at least we'll learn more about the character next December.

@MCUForever - Just-shit League, come on, it was right there.

For the record, I enjoyed the film, but I also enjoy word play, insults, and puns.

@SisterSunday52 - Perfect my ass. It is a flawed film and a financial as well as critical turd.

Damage control is in full effect. The scenes were cut because Justice League is a rushed mess like the rest of the DCEU. WB tried to play catch up with Marvel and failed. The solo movies should've been made first.

I don’t blame them for being fairly ruthless with ZS after the last two movies. Cutting the film to a family-friendly 2 hr runtime no doubt helped their BO numbers. I’m guessing after Whedon gave his feedback on the finished film they were in recovery mode to recoup as much of their investment as possible.

@ElJefe - To expect any director to come in after the film is pretty much wrapped and sort the mess out is a big call, Wheddon did stuff and we know he has the skills but at that late stage he didn't have a real hope what with the reshoot budget going APE, after BVS and Zachs other things I'm stunned he was still there.

@Mclaneinc - You’re right - Wonder if this has ever happened on a big budget movie like this before?

It's unfortunate to see these folks having to play damage control and being asked these questions about negative reception.

@MosquitoFarmer - Yes, the studio and the directors / writers etc should be taking any flack, the guys in front of the camera did lots of stuff we may never see that could have given a whole different slant, to put the out to take the blame is cheap..

@Mclaneinc - Now that the film is released, it is regrettably evident that Warner Bros. once again forced their involvement in the final product, and it shows one way or another.

Lets be honest here, was Justice League great, no, was it fun, yes, was it a batshit mashup of two directors, of course and it shows but I enjoyed it, I'd rather have seen that than nothing.

Also, while Marvel seem to be making better films they are themselves not perfect and one thing we see is that big people who work with Marvel tend to not want to re do the experience because of the control, so while they might have a top team that team may walk at the end of their films. DC just needs to find their game, the characters of the league were fine but they were so minimised in their actual character detail that we knew too little to attach too, while Ezra's comic side allowed an attachment to him poor old Ray had a glib cyborg to show and it was a hard character to like BUT he did what was allowed of his short time. As for Jason, he actually won me over, the difference between the Aquaman I was used to and this was just jarring but once he got some screen time I started to enjoy the character, yeah, he's ok...

For me it was Ben Afleck that seemed the weak link, I loved his Batman in the action parts of BVS but in this he was a very muted part, he looked like he wasn't enjoying it at all and his chubby face told me he's lost the appetite for the part but not the cookies. Its a shame as I liked his Batman.

I have faith in DC to turn this around even if they lose Afleck, lets see some open world bad assery and more big name DC heroes and villains in a PROPERLY thought through film without Zach (sorry mate, liked a little of what you did but the rest was just the usual smoke and mirrors).

Other than the Gotham harbor scene, Aquaman was completely irrelevant to the plot. Did he even battle Steppenwolf? I don't remember much about the third act.

Arthur, his history and Atlantis definitely needed more time dedicated to them. There were a lot of things rushed in the movie as it was, but this aspect was one of the most obvious ones.
