Sorry but, that doesn't look very good at all. I like Millar but wasn't a fan of his writing on Kick-Ass. The movie was a lot better.

I saw the movie but have only glanced through the book. I read about some of the differences. I'm pretty sure I would have hated Big Daddy in the book.

I totally agree. I like Millar to, but sometimes his writing does get too out there. I think the movie was a major improvement on the comic. Hopefully it will be the same for the sequel.

I think I'm the only one that likes the book more than the movie. I'll definitely be picking up this book, and I'll watch the sequel knowing Cage can't screw it up :D

Its just lazy. Those cracks about Rihanna, the 3 big retarded thugs.. its not funny. Its lowest common denominator humor. Like shooting comedy fish in a barrel! no wit.

the comic is better than the film. the movie took many liberties because the comic wasn't completed at the time. but i prefer the comic. and this looks good

No thanks!
I couldn't make it through the first one because of John Romita Jr.'s artwork. he's just one of those artists that I just can't stand the style of. It just looks lazy to me. and Millar's writing was never impressive to me. Nemesis is a fun read, and Superior bored the hell out of me.

Who's the black guy looking after Mindy? She went back to her mom in the first Kick-Ass. The movie f**ked that one up royal.

BigbyBadWolf
BigbyBadWolf - 10/14/2010, 12:01 PM
I don't comment too much so you know, when I do it's because something struck a chord with me. And that chord is:

John Romita Jr is a terrible artist!

I don't understand why he is so popular and respected. His background work is half way good but all of his people are horrible! They look blocky and sickly. They are just too thin or flat looking, or both. The way he draws facial structure is awkward and everyone looks the same. He doesn't shadows well either.

I am SO on board with CBArtist and Shaman. It might be mean, but I think JRJR rode in on his dad's coat tails. His father is far superior.

I'm not saying I can do better or produce work at the same consistency as him, but I just think he is not as good of an artist as his reputation seems to indicate.

@Bigby

Romita Jr. did a really good job with the first one. This one just looks rushed and shitty. It's like the art in TDKR vs. The Dark Knight Strikes again. Just lazy the second time around.

And i liked the movie and the comic both. Very different tones to each of them. i may have liked the movie more, but just a little.

this one just seems rushed in writing and art. it seems like millar is just in it for the payment on this one.

and man does that art suck ass this time around
Shaman
Shaman - 10/14/2010, 12:42 PM
BigbyBadWolf- You shouldn't worry about sounding mean, really. The bottom line is, his job is to entertain us and if we don't like what he does, we have the right to voice it loud and clear. Especially when HE's the reason why we have to stop buying our favorite books only because he's next in line to pencil them! I'm sure the guy's a hard worker and is a very pleasant individual but as a comic book artist, he's definitely below par. From time to time, his blocky unprecise lines make me take a minute and look at myself in the mirror to make sure i don't look like that. His art really does look lazy and flat, like it has no depth. I like art that comes to life on the page, not art that makes me feel like i'm looking at a piece of paper. Maybe if he had some of the best colorists in the biz to work with, it might look better. But who knows, he might have already worked with them and there's just nothing that can be done with his art, even given today's technology. I was anticipating the Black Panther animated tv series but when i found out it was just motion comic art from Romita Jr., they completely lost me! I saw the trailer and I wanted to puke! So yeah, to each's own. Some people don't like my art and i'm totally fine with that. If i wasn't, i wouldn't publish it online. That's just the name of the game, my friend ;)

im excited for this, i just hope its better than kick ass 1. Kick ass 1 was good but there were a lot of parts that were stupid and pointless, which is why the movie improved upon the story in every single way possible

JRJ's style works for some stuff and not for others. I really enjoyed some of this work on Punisher and Daredevil. Thor to a lesser extent. I don't think bright colors really suit him.

I remember seeing an interview with him once where they asked him where his style came from and he basically said "I developed a style that got the work done on time so I can pay the bills." Kinda have to respect that.
ElBeaster
ElBeaster - 10/14/2010, 1:11 PM
I really enjoyed the art for Kick Ass, but looking through it again, i think it was because of the colorist. Anyway, it was still not bad by itself. It really did compliment it well, and you guys should flip through it to check it out.

But the only other one i know by him is The Man Without Fear and the art's just average, if that.

But this just looks like complete shit
ElBeaster
ElBeaster - 10/14/2010, 1:17 PM
@Mass Executions

I can understand that. It's the same reason the greatest writers still produce shit on occassion. The comic book industry demands a constent flow of work. But Kick Ass is a big title and sub par art really takes away from the enjoyment of reading. It's why we shell out 20 bucks for a graphic novel instead of 5 for any other book. And if it's done as quickly as the work above, i don't see why he would expect anyone to buy his stuff

As long as he's doin' the quick work on the comics i don't care about. But if he would start doing the art on Fables or something, I'd flip shit. His style works sometimes (Kick Ass is the only thing i can really think of), but he's definitely not someone i would call a great artist

Shaman, Bigby, and CBArtist: Agreed about JR Jr. I can tolerate his art in small doses, but his lookalike faces and vague style don't look good to me. I also prefer his dad's style. To his credit, JR Jr. does have a rather nice sense of cinematography to many of his stories, finding the right angle to show the action of a panel from that tells the story the panel needs to tell.

As far as Kick-Ass goes, I definitely prefer the movie to the comic. The comic just gets too depraved and sick, a common element to Millar's stories.

Well, in my opinion he can really draw the Punisher and the Kingpin. The character in the teaser image at the bottom looks good. Kids, not so much.

@Beaster - I think all of his work looks rushed. His work has no sense of depth. Everything seems to be flat. His work on TDK Strikes Again was slightly better, but not by much. But I definitely agree with you. I enjoyed the movie version much more than the comic.

@Shaman - I hear you. I know the guy is giving it his best shot so I don't want to knock him for that, but really his work is sub-par for the industry. I agree that the art really needs to come alive on the page. Jim Lee, Steve McNiven, and Bryan Hitch are all really good at that. Of course, there are more but those are three that jump to mind right off the bat. And for the record, your art is excellent, man. You are very talented and your art actually looks like the people you are drawing. Everyone does not look the same.

@Comicb00kguy - You are right in that aspect. He does have a good sense of layout but the overall work just doesn't cut it to me. And yeah, the movie was much better.

Man I can't wait to read this, that hooded dude looks cool as hell.
Shaman
Shaman - 10/15/2010, 5:26 AM
Mass & Beaster- True, his art could fit in better with certain concept comics like Powers or Sam & Twitch. But for the superhero genre, he should be the last guy to go to. Punisher should suit him best out of all the other heroes but some part of me still feels like i'm insulting Punisher fans by saying that. I kinda respect his comment about his "style" but not profoundly. I've seen art that was very minimalist in details take life on the page more than his most detailed work. Take Clayton Henry for example, his art on Area 52 and Wu-Tang could pretty much only be summed up as outlines and everything else was left to the colorist in terms of shading/lighting. But his style still had a lot of depth. That's just something you can't teach. You either get it or you don't. Jr. doesn't.

comicb00kguy- Touché! That's definitely something you can't take away from him! His best attribute is to showcase storytelling angles in various pannels. Many very talented artists in the biz still can't angle as well as Jr. But that's really the extent of his abilities.

BigbyBadWolf- Well thank you VERY much for that mega compliment! I might not care if people hate my art but to hear or read that people love it always gives me a warm feeling inside. I do try really hard at improving my portraits so i'm glad it pays off with the practice! And YES, MY GOD YES, you are so TOTALLY correct with those three artists!!! Those are definitely some of my very faves! :))

i have read this issue myself and its pretty funny because
its all kick ass joining a real life justice league. He walks around with some other guy who has a baseball bat wrapped in foil. Its definitely worth checking out. The art may suck a little bit , but keep in mind it suppse to be based real life so of course the art is not going be all spectacular.
