We recently learned that Matthew Vaughn has plans for a new Kick-Ass trilogy. Bizarrely, he says the first two parts of that - movies called School Fight and VRAM - are already in the works, with the Kick-Ass reboot concluding this new take on the Mark Millar comic book series.
We're pretty sure the idea is for these movies to only be loosely connected; it's possible, for example, that they'll simply take place in the same world rather than sharing any characters.
However, after learning the basic premise of Deadpool 3, Vaughn has told The Playlist that he was initially concerned because of the similarities between the Marvel Studios movie and Kick-Ass 3's premise.
"I know a little bit about [Deadpool 3] but I’m not allowed to talk about it," he tells the site. "But I can just tell you what I know about it. It got me so excited that I will be buying a ticket to its opening weekend because I was laughing and laughing."
"And I had a little bit of fear at the time because I was like, 'Oh my god, this sounds like maybe what we’re doing with ‘Kick-Ass,' they’re doing. But I think we can both survive."
Does this mean we're getting a Multiversal Kick-Ass movie or perhaps just the return of the franchise's original characters similar to how those from the X-Men Universe will appear in Deadpool 3? The former seems unlikely as Vaughn previously said they won't be in it but that there's room for them to return after the reboot; so, perhaps there are other similarities we don't currently know of.
After confirming he's found a director and cast for the movie, Vaughn would go on to share more insights into what fans can expect from the next Kick-Ass.
"The most important line in’ Kick-Ass’ was...two lines [were]... 'why does everyone want to be Paris Hilton, no one wants to be Spider-Man' - which I think is fascinating because remember that was a new thing...the whole reality star thing, that was a big thing, and 'With no power comes no responsibility,' so those were the two hooks."
"So we’ve taken those two ideas, and we [now] have to reflect. 'Kick-Ass,' the reboot is a reflection of the world we now live in and what’s happened to superhero films and comics and where we are now.. It’s not what anyone expects, but there will be enough in it for people to go, 'OK, that’s different, but it’s pretty damn cool.'"
It all sounds pretty weird but we'd be lying to say these Kick-Ass plans aren't intriguing! The fact Vaughn isn't stepping behind the camera to helm the action is a shame (the last time that happened, we ended up with Kick-Ass 2) but he's clearly hands-on and views this reboot as a means of giving the property a second chance.
