KICK-ASS Director Matthew Vaughn Confirms That A "F***ing Nuts" Reboot Is Coming In Two Years

Kick-Ass and The King's Man director Matthew Vaughn has revealed that a reboot of the popular franchise is in the works, and it sounds like a totally fresh take on the property. Read on for details...

Kick-Ass, a big screen adaptation of Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s comic book series, was released back in 2010. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, it didn't make a huge impact at the box office, but it performed well enough (especially against its modest budget) on home video to warrant a sequel.

That was, to be brutally honest, terrible. With that, the franchise fell by the wayside, and director Matthew Vaughn - who helmed the first instalment before handing the follow-up to Jeff Wadlow - moved on to the Kingsman series. Now Vaughn has confirmed that a reboot is in the works.

Talking to Collider, The King's Man helmer said: "We’ve got a big reboot of Kick-Ass in two years. Big reboot. It's so [frick]ing nuts that I can't talk about it," he added. "But we've got that ready to go. All the rights revert back in two years and then we're going to reboot it where people will be like, he is insane."

Kick-Ass was one of the first successful R-Rated superhero movies, and generated a lot of controversy at the time. This was primarily because of the language and violence surrounding young Chloë Grace Moretz, and it sounds like the follow-up will be every bit as divisive among moviegoers.

"So, I had this idea, and it was so nuts that I went, ‘Yeah, great. It’ll cause just as much controversy, and everyone will talk about it and as many people that love it will hate it.’ But I’m not saying it hasn’t got the characters in it and won't have, you know. I'm just saying it's not what anyone could be imagining what it is," Vaughn teased. "And I'm going to need one very, very brave actor or actress to play the new Kick-Ass because it will scare the shit out of them."

Millar has himself rebooted Kick-Ass in recent years with Patience Lee, an Afghanistan war veteran and single mother who dons the Kick-Ass costume. However, based on how Vaughn has reimagined the Kingsman franchise, we'd bet on this new movie being something almost wholly original.

It would be no bad thing to see Moretz back as an adult Hit-Girl, though...

I enjoyed the movie but after reading the original comics soon after I realized how much WRONG the movies got.

I also don't think this is gonna go as well as Vaughn thinks it is. Idk what he could do that would be as contentious or "pushing the envelope" as what The Boys or Invincible has done. Apparently, THe King's Man is a mess (I'll judge for myself of course) but I haven't liked anything he has done since the first film. The second film was an egregious and massive drop-off.

@Waddles - I was in middle school when it first came out. A friend of a friend got caught reading it openly in the hallway and the page had a panel that caused an audible woah. A teacher came out, saw, and snatched it with quickness. Detention for the owner lol

@BlackBeltJones - I don't think I thought the movie was too far off from the comic. At least not until that last scene where I'm almost certain someone in editing spliced in the wrong movie. I know I liked Nic Cage; I always like Nic Cage.

Though full disclaimer it has been a while since I've read or watched either and memory is what it is.

@Reeds2Much - I thought the movie really changed Big Daddy and made him more Batman than Punisher.

And yea the last seen. But also just Dave getting the girl and becoming this cool guy as a result of superhero-ing where I felt like he stayed a loser in the comic and that spoke to certain things.

I very much enjoyed the first one and don't think a reboot is necessary At all... not sure he should be doing that. Honestly, too many friggen reboots these days. Need some original ideas for f*ck sake

Matthew Vaughan is just gonna be stuck making Mark Millar movies for the rest of his days.

@LittleSween - isn’t that sad? I really like his movies but he seems pretty hellbent on just making kingsman for the rest of his days

@Asterisk - This is probably gonna seem like a weird comparison, but I think for Matthew Vaughn, Kingsman is like his Avatar. And what I mean by that is that he comes out with this movie that blows people away and is such a hit that he suddenly just decides "This is all I wanna do forever now", and starts talking about how he's gonna pump out so many sequels and prequels and theme parks and whatever the [frick] else, that it starts to come off as obsessive and almost sad, and we just wish he'd go off and make something else for a change.

Kick Ass was such a waste of potential as far as anything that wasn’t the first movie or first trade paperback. Hopefully this is something maybe?

Man, I love the first Kick-Ass movie. Hope this lives up to that standard.

Kick-Ass to me was a bit like Kingsman to me, or Deadpool – a really fun, subversive experience, that evidently didn't have enough meat to it for more than one good movie.

I'm not interested yet. But I'll try to keep an open mind when they release something. But I already hated the changes they made in the first adaptation.
