Bryan Cranston is a true great, and while the Argylle star is no stranger to genre fare, he's yet to star in a comic book movie or TV show.
The actor was a fan-favourite choice to play Lex Luthor for a time, but that always felt like a knee-jerk response to what a terrific job he did as a bald antagonist in Breaking Bad. Of course, we're also well-aware that many of you would love to see him portray Stan "The Man" Lee in a future biopic.
Today, we have word from scooper @MyTimeToShineH that Cranston has met with Marvel Studios about a mystery MCU role. Kevin Feige has general meetings with lots of actors, so there's nothing to say this will lead anywhere.
It's an undeniably exciting prospect, though, particularly with movies like The Fantastic Four, Avengers 5, and the X-Men reboot on the horizon.
"I want to play an antagonist a fraction smarter than the protagonist, never dumbed down to give the hero an easy win," Cranston previously said while sharing his interest in boarding a comic book adaptation. "That's frustrating and boring to watch."
"Actually, that was the character, I’ll admit. Mister Sinister was the character I was thinking about."
After sharing his interest in playing the X-Men '97 villain, Cranston explained why he has little to no interest in playing a character we've already seen on screen. "I guess it’s a selfish standpoint. I don’t want to do a character that has been done several times before. I don’t want to be compared like 'Well, his Commissioner Gordon was yada yada yada...'"
"I don't want to do that. I want to take something that hasn’t been done," he concluded.
While we'd advise against getting too excited about this rumour, Marvel Studios casting Cranston as Mister Sinister would be a huge win for its upcoming X-Men reboot, especially when he's passionate about the character (the Malcolm in the Middle icon has gone so far as to suggest Sinister inspired Walter White).
It was in 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse that 20th Century Fox first teased the big screen debut of Mister Sinister. We waited for him to appear in Logan, Deadpool 2, Dark Phoenix, and even The New Mutants, only for all those teases to come to nought. At the time, Jon Hamm was the rumoured frontrunner for the role.
