Marvel Studios Signs Deal To "Resurrect" Stan Lee Through Digital Technology And Archival Footage

In a move that's sure to be divisive, Marvel Studios has signed a deal with Genius Brands and POW! Entertainment for the rights to use the name and likeness of the legendary Stan Lee...

It sounds like the legendary Stan Lee's MCU cameos may soon return, as Marvel Studios has struck a deal to use the late comic book creator's name and likeness in future feature films, television productions, Disney theme parks, various “experiences” and merchandizing.

THR reports that Marvel has signed a 20-year deal with Genius Brands International and POW! Entertainment to essentially "resurrect" The Man using CGI and old footage.

“It really ensures that Stan, through digital technology and archival footage and other forms, will live in the most important venue, the Marvel movies, and Disney theme parks,” said Andy Heyward, chairman and CEO of Genius Brands. “It’s a broad deal.”

“The audience revered Stan and if it’s done with taste and class, and respectful of who he was, it will be welcomed,” he added. “He is a beloved personality and long after you and I are gone, he will remain the essence of Marvel.”

For many, taste and class will already be out the window here. Though the trade does note that this deal "does not necessarily pave the way for the return of Lee cameos in movies," it's probably only a matter of time. For now, Marvel has the permission to use Lee’s name, voice, likeness and signature in movies and television projects, along with images, existing footage and audio recordings.

What do you guys make of this new deal? Do you see it as a way of keeping Lee's memory alive, or something more sinister? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

Capitalizing off of someone who has no say in it, whether he would’ve wanted or not is just despicable tbh.

@aurorsand146 - meh, yes and no. Stan built himself up over the years to be more than just a person, he hoped to be a symbol of kindness and hope via the medium of superheroes. Stan Lee is now on par with Walt Disney as a public figure whose importance spans beyond just being a guy. So long as portions of whatever profits come from the use of his likeness goes to his family, his charities and programs he started to help comics and cartoons thrive, I support letting his legacy live on and be brought to new fans throughout the ages. If used properly I could see it being what Stan would want.

@ElricReturns - but we can't ask him, so it just feels weird to me they're kinda making the decision for him based on what he may have wanted.

And the Walt Disney comparison is a good one. They don't digitally recreate Walt Disney either while we still know what he did, so why would they suddenly do that with Stan Lee?

@ElricReturns - this.

As long as it's his image in a TV, newspaper or something I'm OK with the cameos.

@aurorsand146 - What about when they sell doctor who action figures of dead Doctors? Do you feel the same then? They have no control over their image for decades after they're gone. What's the difference?
aurorsand146
aurorsand146 - 5/18/2022, 3:09 PM
@Nightwing1015 - Thts a very different comparision. All the incarnations of the Doctors are fictional characters from a franchise. Stan Lee however was not a fictional character, he was a real human being. There’s nothing wrong with Disney selling Leia action figures but selling action figures of Carrie Fisher is a big no-no.

@aurorsand146 - imo a Stan Lee hologram or digital copy at a marvel theme park is something he would do In a comic so I def like parts of this
Ryos
Ryos - 5/18/2022, 6:01 PM
@Ryos - but the thought of his cameos showing up in future movies and shows is in very bad taste

@bkmeijer1 - But we can ask those close to him and the company he founded that took part in the deal... I don't think people on the internet have better insight in this deal and what Stan would be happy with than those who were actually involved in the deal

@JakeyChappers - very true. But even then, I still think some might take advantage of that. Same with his instagram account.

@aurorsand146 - Why does the fact its a fictional character make it a valid distinction? It still seems pretty similar to me. It's still his image being reproduced forever.

Nightwing1015 - 5/18/2022, 1:39 PM
@TheAcuario - Why is it wrong? Is it wrong when they use Christopher Eccleston's image to promote Doctor Who despite the fact he hates the show? I don't see a difference between the cases. Long after Ecclestone is gone they will still sell his action figures.

@Nightwing1015 - the family is absolutely terrible cause they’ll be getting $$ out of this, and then you have a corporation who is milking on a dead man’s name. I personally would want him to Rest In Peace. Both sides are sickening.

They should of just used Deadpool with a wig, glasses and stash.

If they decide to ever bring The One Above All to the screen for a brief scene and make him look like Stan, I would be ok with it. But if it's to just keep making cameos... then no...

@Dredd97 - Jack Kirby is Fulcrum from what I know...
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/18/2022, 9:28 AM
@Urubrodi - Jack Kirby has been hinted at as being The One Above All. There's even a Fantastic 4 issue where they go and talk to him and he's drawn to look like Kirby and is even sitting at an artist's drawing board.

Even though this isnt confirmed, it's widely considered to be the only time in all of Marvel Comics that we've seen The One Above All in his true form. He's made other brief appearances here and there, but only in disguise or as a voice.

Why is this even needed? You could simply have his cameo in the form of picture Easter eggs like how they did in Daredevil if paying respects is the purpose. "Resurrecting" him using CGI seems.. distasteful.

Did his daughter make money off this?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 5/18/2022, 9:31 AM
@LilJimmy - This is the real question. Lee was known to be surrounded by people that were taking advantage of him and his money in his later years. I believe his daughter was one of them. I might be mixing her up with someone else though.
