Samuel L. Jackson Challenges Quentin Tarantino Over Comments About Marvel Actors Not Being Movie Stars

Long-time Quentin Tarantino collaborator Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in the MCU, has challenged the iconic director over his recent comments about Marvel actors not being movie stars...

Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino recently ignited debate online when he once again blasted what he described as the "Marvel-ization of Hollywood," explaining why he doesn't consider Marvel actors to be movie stars in the process.

While some agreed with the Once Upon a Time in Hollywood director, others (including Shang-Chi star Simu Liu) had a very different take, and another actor who Tarantino knows very well has now weighed in.

Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in the MCU, has worked with Tarantino numerous times and the two are said to be good friends, but Jackson definitely doesn't share his frequent collaborator's views when it comes to what constitutes a "movie star."

“It takes an actor to be those particular characters, and the sign of movie stardom has always been, what, asses in seats? What are we talking about?” Jackson said when asked if he had a response to Tarantino during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “That’s not a big controversy for me to know that apparently these actors are movie stars. Chadwick Boseman is Black Panther. You can’t refute that, and he’s a movie star.”

While it's hard to argue with Jackson's take, some do seem to have misconstrued Tarantino's comments to an extent. At the end of the day, the heroes/villains in major comic book movies have become bigger than the actor playing them - at least in the sense that they are now the real draw for moviegoers.

What do you guys make of Tarantino's comments and Jackson's response? Be sure to share your thoughts down below.

This conversation is tiring at this point. Sam is right about Chad though.

@GhostDog - Dude, I hear ya. Look - I LOVE Quentin and his movies. Some of my favorites. But I'm getting pretty tired of hearing him rag on CBMs and now the actors in them. Look at his movies. Most of the characters in them are bigger than life characters and some even approach superhero-like status (Django vs. the Punisher anyone?). Granted his characters don't have super powers per-se, but c'mon! They are definitely on par with Marvel's street-level heroes.

And with that in mind, how are the actors/actresses who play these characters in his films better than the ones in the MCU films and deserving of the title "movie stars"? I will say this: I don't recall ever tearing up in a QT movie, but I sure as hell have in MCU movies due to the actors' performances ("Endgame", "NWH", "BP:WF", etc.), so don't tell me that's not true acting and that those people are not "movie stars". So I would tag onto what SLJ said and say that it's not only about getting asses in seats, but making the audience FEEL something while watching the movie. I mean, can anyone of us watch that scene in "Endgame" when the portals open and not feel anything? With the people in the theater cheering? Sit there and go "Meh, it's just a bunch of studio lackeys for hire"? So if those actors are not "movie stars", then I don't know what is.

@GhostDog - Is he though? people saw him and said "look, its T'Challa", not the other way around...

@TheHumanSpider2 - He was the number one fan choice to play T’Challa. Internet got hyped when he was cast. Clearly he became even bigger after BP but let’s not act like Chadwick was just some unknown actor.

Honestly, for better or worse, the time of "traditional" movie stars is kinda over. People have become more "picky" in regards to the movies they go out of their way to see on the big screen and I'm not sure that a big name leading actor or even an all-star cast is as big selling point as it used to be 10-20 years ago.

I still think that, say, the big MCU actors are movie stars and Tarantino is one more "old man yelling at a cloud".

Jackson speaking facts.💪

Tarantino is great but he is coming off bitter .

He strikes me as a guy at the club jealous that the dude next to him is getting all the attention and he thinks if that guy wasn't there all the attention would be on him.🙃

That's not how it works🤣

@AmazingFILMporg - If you actually watched the video they are referring to where he responded to a question and offered his opinion and still walked away from it thinking Quentin is bitter in any way shape or form, then I don't know what to tell you. His words are accurate and I detected no bitterness whatsoever. I think we are taking his words too far.

@AmazingFILMporg - If he should be bitter about anything it should be a 3D remake of a film everyone had already seen beating Once Upon a Time....in Hollywood at the BO.
