Brendan Fraser Shares His Thoughts On Universal's Decision To Reboot THE MUMMY

The star of The Mummy trilogy shares his thoughts on plans for a reboot, saying that while he's unsure of it being necessary, he's supportive of the idea and will certainly see the new take.

In an interview with Crave Online while promoting Stand Off, Brendan Fraser discusses Universal Pictures' plans for a reboot of The Mummy franchise, in which he stars as Rick O'Connell. He certainly doesn't sound bitter about not being in a fourth installment of the financially successful series (2008's Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor grossed over $400M worldwide, so it would make sense that more movies would be made), and he's supportive of the film and will see it opening day even if it isn't necessary. "I wasn't approached for it. I would certainly entertain the idea, and I know for sure that I will be there on opening day to get the good seat. Unless they call me for some in-joke, nudge-nudge, wink-wink reason to walk an actor through a cameo in the background a la Hitchcock or something. I don’t even know if it's necessary, but how do I feel about that? I'm supportive of it. I think it's going to be great. It's good source material. So many films based on the mummy were made even before that. I don't think for a minute that Steve Sommers and the current company were the ones who really brought it to any interest or prominence. Those characters were around in the cabinet of Universal monsters and have been for almost 100 years now." For Crave Online's full interview with Fraser, click the source link below.

Len Wiseman (Total Recall, Live Free Or Die Hard) is directing Universal's reboot of The Mummy, with Star Trek Into Darkness' Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman producing. It was recently reported that the studio was working on two competing scripts for the film (which is described as horror and epic), with The Hunger Games' Billy Ray writing one and Prometheus's Jon Spaihts penning the original draft. The plan is to have production begin by late summer or early fall and release sometime in the summer of 2014.

LOL would be funny to have him as a random cameo just like in GI Joe

Iam pretty sure he wouldn't mind doing it. Hell he is having some financial issue, he just went to court request to reduce this child support from $2 mill. to his kids per year! He can't afford it anymore!

I saw the 1st one for it's potential and its advancements in CG...it was decent enough. The 2 and 3 were crap. I don't expect much here. The Mummy really isn't all that scary.

@BlackHulk...FYI, the guys has about 5 projects releasing in 2013. Not that I'm a fan, but before you make blanket dumb statements, at least check IMDB.

Universal's Mummy franchise existed long before Fraser was born and will continue long after he rots and lies stinking in the Earth.

I liked the first one, but I wished they'd tone down the violence and add more comedy.

You know I think he did great in the first one. I really thought he was going to be the next Bruce Willis. Had everything in it. it made me like the guy.

I still think he has got it in him to be a great action star. He just needs to let go of comedy.

NO MORE MONKEY BONE!

I want a serious, creepy, scary take on the Mummy this time. He is among the top 5 great Universal monsters, along with Frankenstein, Dracula, the Wolfman, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon. By the way, Universal, WHERE ARE THE REST OF YOUR MONSTER MOVIE REMAKES? We've heard about the Invisible Man, the Black Lagoon, and The Wolfman 2 FOREVER! All you've given us is WEREWOLF: THE BEAST AMONG US. 2010's Wolfman was good! Now let's see more remakes!

no Boris Karloff, no mummy.
Its sad people think Fraiser rather than Karloff when it comes to this franchise.

I hate young people.

Carl@ second that.

Remember watching those old horror movies many times from tv as kid.

Another movie ala Boris Karloff´s Mummy would be great. If they find actor who can be as creepy and terrifying as Karloff.

Although he has done some turds, always like Brendan..seemed like a decent guy. Right after the first Mummy there were times he had that all american blondish "Steve Rogers" like persona going...might have made a decent Cap back in his day. A little silly in most roles, but always fun

@SUPERGUY15, With the short attention spans these days, horror movies are being replaced with ultraviolent thrillers. But the classics like Amityville and Poltergeist still hold up.

When I was a kid I saw a movie about a mummy who moved in paintings. It was kind of like a twisted version of Dorian Gray. I had nightmares for days.

The ride at Universal in Orlando is sweet though. Even if it's not the "modern take" lol. What a silly bitch that BF is!

I was against the reboot when I first heard this, because I love the first two. But I have come around to Brendan's thinking since then, if they can offer something new and turn it into a proper horror movie, more in the style of the original movie (without the humourous tone of the Fraser movies), it might not be too bad of a reboot.

But I still think they should wait a while, but thats probably not gonna happen because profits is too important
