Little known in America, the Buichi Terasawa-created Japanese manga known as Cobra the Space Pirate was turned into an animated series that was hugely popular across Europe. Now it looks like it will be getting a live-action adaption.

After a long courtship, Aja said he's been granted the rights by Terasawa. He wants to turn the futuristic saga into a tent pole-sized live action franchise. He is writing the script with Gregory Levasseur and will produce with Levasseur, Marc Sessego and Alexandra Milchan.

"In a future where merchant spaceships and ruthless brigands sail across space, Cobra is a notorious rogue pirate whose refusal to align with the United Galaxies Federation or the Pirates Guild puts him on the business end of a huge bounty. As he tries to keep his identity secret and avoid capture, Cobra teams up with a sexy bounty hunter named Jane, who is out to locate her sisters and decode a treasure map tattooed on their backs. Their goal: to liberate a lost treasure on Mars." To Aja, Cobra was every bit a seminal rogue as Han Solo or Indiana Jones.

"I grew up dreaming about Cobra," Aja told Deadline. "My day was, finish school, run home and switch on the TV and I was hardly the only one. Kids did it in France, Italy, Spain, all over Western Europe. For many people there is Star Wars and nothing else, but for me and my writing partner Gregory, there is Star Wars and Cobra. I am so surprised it never crossed the ocean and made the same impact in the U.S., because it is so big everywhere else. There are 60 books, a lot of TV animation and so many adventures, pirates and bad guys that it is perfect to be reinvented into a really cool space opera adventure franchise for a new generation."

Now that the rights are secure, Aja said he and his partners have begun talking to everyone from financiers to creature designers. After unleashing the piranhas through 3D, Aja is considering the same possibilities for the space adventure. "It should be in 3D, science fiction and 3D are a good mix," Aja said. "I'll start work on the script soon, but I have been carrying this inside me for 30 years and we are talking to the creature designers of films like Avatar and Star Trek, building a new world and doing it the right way."

@ destroyer14

i love manga & anime,what i don't love is how they translate to film version.

so far dragonball z,speed racer,blood the last vampire & more than lightly the preist end up turning out complete shite.

why ? because they get americanized.

i'm all for akira or ghost in the shell to be made live action,but its got to have complete japanese cast & crew filmed in tokyo & so on.

it can only have english or american actors in it if they are in the original manga or anime.

i remember watching Cobra the Space Pirate it was alright but i dont think this is a good idea cause we all know they always ruin Manga and Anime.

@deadpool72

u forgot the live action movie Guyver, Fist of the North Star and Crying Freeman they ruin them.

the problem with that is Akira aint going to be filmed in tokyo it will be filmed in American. the new story setting is not going to be "Neo-Tokyo" but it will be called “New Manhattan,” a city rebuilt by Japanese money. what make it even worst the characters name will be changed and the movie is going to be PG-13.

Albert Hughes the rumor director said in a radio show that happen awhile ago that WB want Akria to be PG-13 heres the link to hear the interview

but there is some good news Akria is ment to be dead according to a report from Bloody Disgusting heres the article link

Never heard of this? Is it good?

Takashi Miike should direct Akira!:D

I heard that Spielberg is going to direct Ghost in the Shell movie so i dont know what to think about it yet! The guy made A.I. and Minority Report so theres a chance its good!... But then again?... Who knows?

I hope they remake Crying Freeman and this time with faithful adaption! It has so much quality to be a great movie!

@ jazzman

you're 100% right,i actually did forget those.

just shows ya,how memorable those films actually are.

please don't make anymore anime or manga live action films,they've all been crap so far.

@deadpool72

even look at Avatar The Last Airbender i know its not Japanese but American but its clearly influence by Japanese style of anime with the designs. even they turn it to a live action movie and they still f%@ed up.

you know what they should do is what they did for The Matrix thats influence by a few Manga but it is their own original film without touching any Manga/Anime for them to make into live action.

YESSSSS YESSSS. YESSSSSS. YES. But Aja, you dont need to “reinvent” anything, its all there!! Just capture what makes cobra awesome, the villains, the music, the psychogun, the violence, (specially against females, hey equal rights) the unorthodox ways in which cobra always makes it against all odds, the arrogance, the duality of the character -that got lost in the new ovas > overdoing the cool spike / vin diesel bs – example,how he used to run screaming like a moron-very luping like- and then suddenly doing something awesome) ah Tomas Jane > perfect cobra, has the same duality you should be looking for, i think he could pull the action hero part, and he already has the dorky face look going on. perfect.
