AP and Fox and more Videos on Superman Says He Will Renounce U.S. Citizenship

Superman has started a stir with a declaration in the new issue of "Action Comics" that he intends to renounce his US citizenship because he's tired of his actions being construed as instruments of US policy.

f**k FOX News them guys have no right to talk about Superman. Superman has always been a gobal character he dont hate America but he feels his not just bound to American.

im surprise the FOX News guys never asked to see Superman's birth certificate or called him illegal alien.

i bet any money they dont know nothing about Superman: Red Son that would make them go even more crazy.

It's a very interesting thing for the comic book. Kal-El embraces humanity, not just a country.

Crazy lefties being crazy lefties in here. You guys would love a one world government 1984 style. Can't wait to finish kicking the rest of you out of office. Oh and you keep calling us "sad" but when shit happens you come on hands and knees begging to us because you know we're the only ones that will help. You're welcome douchebag.

Good healthcare system? I guess when 90% of your income is taxed the government can be as socialist as it wants. Too bad they won't help you when terrorist and North Korea want to blow things up. 1984 indeed.

Americans don't call them self's the protectors of the world most Americans hate being involved in 3 wars and being in other country thinking we can police the world. The only people who say we should be the protesters of the world are small corrupted groups in the U.S government that are controlled and own by corporations and most the people on wall street.

Hopefully the next writer will reverse this travesty. You know how comics are. DC should not have let this happen.

i saw glenn beck refer to this for all of 2 seconds, uncleverly working it into a montage of how progressives are targeting our children and making them unamerican....

i havent said this much lately... but F U Beck!!
you can be as right about everything else as you want, but i lose all respect for someone whos gonna use a simple superman comic completely out of context as filler material to support something that speaks for itself

if jesus comes back, do you think they'll consider him an illegal alien and turn him away? gonna be real hard to authenticate a 2000 year old birth certificate written in Aramaeic on a piece of parchment in a manger in the dead of night.....

I for one think this is a very progressive move, and he's following the X-Men's example of being GLOBAL heroes. I think that both the left and the right are blowing this WAY out of proportion. It's a comic book, dipsticks! Get that through your soft skulls!

Also, I GREATLY deplore how our country's level of discourse has diminished ever since Obama's election. Once he became president, the idiots, numbskulls, and melonheads came out of the woodwork in droves. It's a conspiracy, I tell you! And bashing on this move of Supes only proves it!

In fact, I DARE Huckabee (or should I say "HICKabee") and a guy from the left (since we're an equal country here) to come and fight me mano-e-mano to prove their point. The heck with diplomacy, BRING 'EM ON!!!!!!! I'll take them both down with my bare hands!!!!!!!!!! Same thing goes for Glenn Beck and all the Tea partiers in the country!!!!! You heard me, I'll fight them all with my BARE hands!!! Left, Right, UBER-Right, UBER-Left, I dare them ALL to face me!!!!

And yes, I know this sounds silly coming from this conversation of a comic book storyline, but trust me, I'm NOT kidding.

Of course he is a global hero, he has always been a global hero, but thats not even what this is about anymore, this is political bullshit! He doesn't have to give America the finger in order to be a global hero.

Okay, Superman issue 901... Superman solves world hunger and finishes the war on crime. To hell with most of the world, a bunch of them want us wiped of face of the earth along with Israel. Just another stunt of DC Comics to sell comic books. So be it, its an AMERICAN way. Oh no i said it, a capitalist American way. Oh no i said capitalist... those evil bastards trying to make a profit. Damn it did it again said profit this time. So all you lowsy American haters posting here... well you have the freedom of speech as do I. Oh wait American freedom of speech. Damn it all to hell. Why would anyone want to be an American? Hate having all those freedoms and not knowing what to do with them. Of course if your the most powerful man around who is going to shut you up. :D

I wonder where in that comic book did Superman insulted America...what he is doing makes complete sense and in fact, it is in the best interest of USA. By renouncing his national ties, his actions world-wide won't be seen as the actions of an American agent. For example, if Superman decides to go to North Korea and depose Kim Jong-il, that would be his personal business and won't have political repercussions like inciting a war between America and NK biggest ally, China.

But I guess some people just rather be offended about a comic book character being an Earth hero instead of an American hero...you know, because it is all part of the one global government conspiracy brought to you by the New World Order.

I wonder if Alex Jones's head exploded when he heard about this.

I was with Mike Huckabee until he made those xenophobic comments. I bet if he took those kids in Arizona to other countries he'd make it a point to take them to 3rd-world countries to drive a point home, when in fact a lot of people I know would be thrilled to live in any number of the other developed nations of the world like Australia, Japan, or the Netherlands. It doesn't mean they hate America - they just have things that appeal to them. I also like how Huck so strongly said he wasn't going to buy this issue. [frick] off. Would you really have bought ANY comic book anyway?

I am American. I'm proud to be an American. I love to live in America. But I'm sick of people acting like this nation is [frick]ing perfect. It's got problems like any other country, and downplaying them when promoting a Nationalist agenda only to bring them back up during election time is one of the biggest forms of hypocrisy today. If I were Superman, a guy born on a whole other planet, I would've done this years ago.

Luckily Huckabee will never ever be president and Obama will win a 2nd term as president. I am willing to bet money on it.

You know, it's all part of that NWO conspiracy that I mentioned earlier. ;)

I'd like to see all these peoples faces if America pulled out of every country , brought all our troops home to protect our own borders. Sick of anti American bull through the world, but the world loves the free money we send them in aid. Superman was created by two Jewish men who wanted to be known as an American. To Mr Ramon Suarez, republicans want people who come here to do it legally. Get a social security number, pay taxes and speak English. Not carry their kids to the local hospital, get fixed and then disappear, leaving regular tax payers to pay for it. This country was built by immigrants who did things right. Not leach off the country and disappear.

I can't see why Superman can't be a U.S. Citizen and help other countries. Superman is based in America, or are they going to get rid of Metropolis because it apparently keeps him from being a global hero? Also just because Superman fights for "truth, Justice, and the American way" (a phrase that is still repeated in every issue of the ongoing Superman comic series) doesn't mean he fights for the American government or the policies of whatever person is President of America at the time.

@mainstream05: Huckabee did say "any country of their choosing" when talking about the dropping off of kids. Furthermore, Superman wasn't born on Krypton. His spaceship was a birthing matrix. It's a Kryptonian traditon to have the children born seperatly from the parents. Kal-El still wasn't born when he took off. He was either born in space or on Earth. Exactly which one hasn't been clarified.

You know, I wouldn't be surprised if King Kong did the same thing as Supes, and he didn't even immigrate to the US; Americans abducted him. Somebody, please, do a video parody of the 1969 "Bambi meets Godzilla" short, only with King Kong stomping on a ranting and raving Mike Huckabee (and a guy from the LEFT).

That's right, I'm CENTRIST.

I posted this in response to another article here about this story, but I'd like to repost it, with a few additional comments, in reply to this one as well:

I find the idea of Superman wanting to renounce his American citizenship disheartening. It goes beyond the usual comic book gimmicks to keep readers interested and commits an atrocity greater than any Superman has ever faced: it robs HIM of the CORE that shaped his ideals; not as SUPERman but as a MAN.

America, like all countries, isn't without its' problems. But in Superman we could still see a symbol of the greatest things about OUR nation. Yes, Superman and numerous other heroes have always protected the WORLD from global threats. But to REDEFINE him as a "global" hero doesn't make him a greater symbol. Much like when Prince once decided to be refered to only by a nebulous symbol for awhile, it makes Superman a symbol without any true meaning.

If the "issue" that DC would attempt to legitimize (As they've sadly attempted to do with others.) is that Superman doesn't want his actions to be misinterpreted as being an extension of the United States gov't, then he should simply begin to operate as Batman does in Gotham City, with no official statements being made. Standing firmly WITH America as one of her own WITHOUT necessarily allying himself directly with it's powers.

In Japan Ultraman is every bit as great an icon to their country as Superman is to America. Maybe even greater. And being a fan of several of his incarnations myself I can say with confidence that those who own him would NEVER have him renounce his identification with Japan or allow him to be misused in an attempt to legitimize an "issue". They have a respect for their greatest hero and what he represents to them that I think we, as comic book fans here in the West, have LONG SINCE lost.

And when we lose that, what are we left with?

@FIRG - good notion... not to mention a country thats more focused on Hockey.. which is like Zion defined for me...

@FLIX - pretty sure ranting like a douche about how you'll fight everyone that either agrees or disagrees with you no matter what.. doesnt help your argument... shove Centricity up your ass... you're not the sun.. nothing revolves around you except the flies eating your unwashed dingleberrys.. be a human being and take a stand.. dont just troll against everybody like a prick

and by the way.... im a constitutionalist and a tea party supporter... but my brain has evolved enough to know that fighting wont change what either of us is...

i wish i hadnt jumped ahead and written my last response before reading your comment DaiRaion... that was incredibly well written and like the great woody guthrie, 'teaches you something you already knew, but might have forgotten along the way or lost sight of'

unfortunately all i believe we're left with is one more machination to divide us as a populace... and what better way to do it than with the hero that inspired our oldest living generation?

and if you think Rosie the Riveter inspired the war effort in the 40's for the women as their symbol of an 'endeavor to persevere', then exactly who the hell do you think inspired the millions of male soldiers?
the GODDAMN BATMAN?! only the Man Of Steel can Stare Down a Nazi Panzer....

Bottom line its just a cheap publicity stunt by DC to sell more books and get some free Press. No more no less. Superman was a global hero before and after. There is no point to dis the country he was raised in. Cheap publicity stunt all the way. Why ot just kill him again and resurect him. While there at it. Superman should renounce being a citizen of Earth while hes at it. I used to like Superman but his character is so off now Seems like he really was killed by Doomsday
BlindLemonShemp

its more than a publicity stunt, anybody that says different is shortsighting the situation.... or just leaving it at a superhero comic book and nothing more...

yeah... SUPERMAN is a Fictional Character... but there's a lot of people that also believe JESUS is a Fictional Character...
and there's a lot of people to whom SUPERMAN is much more of a parent and role model than their parents ever were... call it stupid or fanboyism or whatever you want... but this isnt Mayberry... not every kid has 2 parents and food on the table every night.... this is the real world and a kid has to believe in something..

basically its like if the Catholic Church came out and said: Jesus has decided that he's also the Son of Buddha and Mohammed! or Jesus renounces Christianity!

@DaiRaion - Well done, well thought out.

@Golden123 - Good job as well.

I just feel like when I turn on the news, and now Superman... people are ashamed of being American. Where has American pride gone? Why has the President apologized on my behalf as an American to the world? I have nothing to apologize for. Granted that apology "tour" happened last year.

Has anybody thought that this could be a run-up to rebooting the character in the movie?

By introducing a new, global Superman, the knock-on effect will be to raise awareness and public interest in the new, global Superman film that will be with us soon?

Just a thought.

Superman being globsl but based in America/Metropolis primarily has been that way for ages. Only way tonmake him truely global is to kill off Clark Kent and hang out at the fortress of solituded all day listing to some kind of global police scanner. That would be pretty lame of course

For those that think superman is completely global seem to forget he is primarily based in a fictional city US city.

I really really doubt Superman or Batman inspired any soldier in WW2 with the possible exception of that old Superman cartoon sabotaging Japanese ships. I dont think any soldier jumped out with hands on his hips and go trying to bend Nazi machineguns and tank barrels. Writers/DC Corp simply made a pathetic publicity stunt which if followed through will damage the character for years to come. Still helps to hang on to reality, some are getting carried away

this whole idea is bull crap. it's all propaganda. instead of renouncing he citizenship, superman should just lead by example of what the "american" way truly is. doing what he did he's being a whinny baby like in smallville.

Although a controversial move on DC's part they are only going back to how it was in the original comics. "...and the American Way" was introduced in the Superman TV series from 1952.
Anyway i think it is a good move, 'Superman' is and should be a global hero. Remember Clark Kent will remain a U.S. Citizen and is, I'm sure, proud of his upbringing and American values. He would of been aware of this when he made his decision but knows that the icon that is Superman should be seen as a savior to the world as a whole. Clark Kent/Kal-El will always be American at heart, no escaping that.
