BOX OFFICE: THE HOBBIT Manages To Stay #1 On Christmas Day; 47 RONIN Flops

Who didn't see that one coming? As well as being a critical failure, 47 Ronin now looks set to be 2013's final big budget flop! Meanwhile, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug managed to stay at the top of the North American box office on one of the most competitive days of the year...

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug has now earned just shy of $150 million domestically, and a haul of $9.3 million yesterday put it just ahead of Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street (which took $9.2 million). This means that the Peter Jackson helmed sequel held onto the #1 spot, and it's thought that it will be the one film to rule them all over the five-day holiday period in North America. 47 Ronin, which stars Keanu Reeves, debuted at #7 with $7.1 million and a B+ CinemaScore. The fact that it's already off to a soft start in several key Asian territories and should struggle to top $20 million in total domestically means that 47 Ronin will face an uphill battle in regaining its $175 million budget. Did you guys watch either of these movies yesterday?

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

STARRING:

Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins
Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey
Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield
Graham McTavish as Dwalin
Ken Stott as Balin
Aidan Turner as Kíli
Dean O'Gorman as Fíli

Everyone should see American Hustle, such a fantastic film. Also found Anchorman 2 to be hilarious, was a little let-down by hobbit 2

Smaug took my coins. Disappointed in the excessive CGI swordfights and improbability of the barrel chase, but Smaug was awesome.
Godzilla trailer looked great on the big screen, too.

Hobbit 2 best movie of the year. Thoroughly entertaining. I still need to see Gravity.

Saw 47 Ronin yesterday and it wasn't bad. It wasn't a great movie, but it had some exciting fight scenes, but some laughable dialogue and huge leaps of logic. But overall, it was not nearly as bad as it is being made out to be. It's definitely better than that trash Iron Man 3. I give Ronin a C, maybe a C+ for a few interesting elements and cool sword play.

Actually due to the trouble production and reshoots, officially the budget is still 175 but i'm sure it's knee deep in the 200 million mark.

Good to hear! I am going to check out 47 Ronin next week or the following. I have not heard one good thing about Anchorman 2 from the people I know. I didn't watch the first one until three years after it was released and found myself not watching it through to the end. Doubt I will ever watch the second one.

As someone who loves fantasy (loved Desolation of Smaug) I would rather of had the 47 Ronin story told in a more realistic fashion with maybe hints of supernatural like in Game of Thrones. It's too bad cause I love the real story but don't feel like seeing this version in theaters at least.

I'm feeling sorry for everyone involved in 47 Ronin, but to be honest, the movie deserves the flop. Sad, since I really like both Keanu, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

And I still want my money back.

@NeoBaggins I think you're referring to what that Marc Webb faggot said about beings with snouts not being able to emote like we can.

Suck on this Webb!

@ISleepNow

Thank you. And far as not being able to emote, did you see the look on Smaug's face when he laid eyes on that gold statue.

Webb will probably [frick] up ALL Spider-man's villains.

Desolation of Smaug was good but unfortunately I didn't love it like all the other Tolkien film adaptations, and I can't help feeling bad about it. Hope it grows on me.

The best:

-Thranduil. My god, Lee Pace is one sinister mother[frick]er!. I cannot wait to see what he does with Ronan.
-Smaug. The beast was stunning and the voice was right on.

The worst:

-The love triangle. I feel that wasn't necessary in this movie at all.

Nitpicking:

-Legolas' zombie eyes. Nuff said.
