Movie posters have been an integral part of movie promotion since the dawn of the age of "moving pictures." Originally, posters consisted of primarily placards placed outside of theaters that listed the features shown within, but by the early 1900s they began to feature full color illustrations, borrowing much of the design inspiration from circus posters and popular advertisements.

Today, we can't imagine a movie being released without a movie poster and comic book and other genre movies tend to release multiple posters featuring different scenes from the movie or focusing on individual characters from the movie. Thanks to the popularity of the internet as a major marketing tool, the advent of "motion posters" has started to take hold.

I've spent some time tracking down and posting over 400 comic book and related genre movie posters. Click the image below to check out the gallery. You'll find some blasts from the past and some obscure foreign and low print run posters. It's a work in progress, so if you don't see your favorite CBM represented let me know and I'll work on finding some posters for it.

Cool even though I dont think that Captain America movie poster deserves to sit aside the Dark Knight poster. That CA movie was pretty bad.

I noticed on the last page there was an Elektra movie poster. I thought that was a direct to video movie, did it spend time in the theaters? Thats also one in my DVD collection still in cellophane since i got it.

@Anil: Yeah, I agree, especially TDK. CBM's are catering more and more to the fans by releasing multiple versions of posters, which is awesome!

@Star: That was a stinker alright! Oh, well. It came out at a time when there were hardly any CBMs in production.

@MsKyle08: Great, great poster!

@grif: Holy sh*tballs! You like something I posted (I think)?!? I'm freaking out, mang!

@Number21: Still in the wrapper, huh? Yeah, it was in theaters briefly. From Wikipedia:

Elektra opened on January 14, 2005 in the United States in 3,204 theatres. In its opening weekend it ranked 5th, taking $12,804,793. In its second weekend it took $3,964,598, a drop of 69 percent. Domestically the total gross was $24,409,722, at the time the lowest for a movie featuring a Marvel Comics character since Howard the Duck. The film had a worldwide total of $56,681,566.

The DVD of Elektra was released on April 5, 2005. It featured several deleted scenes such as one featuring a cameo Ben Affleck, who starred as the title character in Daredevil, which preceded this film.

I have the blood-splattered Joker "HA!" poster on a wooden plaque in my room. My brother tripped out on salvia one night and had to take it down, haha.

@LEEE: Yeahk, dig in!

@canadianturd: Ha! That stuff is kir-azy!

@BryEL: Huh? Not sure if you hate the movie or just think it should be retitled. You have to admit that the tagline is pretty cool: "An Epic of Epic Epicness."

@lc: Thanks!

I apologize to everyone who tried to view this post yesterday, but weren't able to. CBM is going through some server growing pains right now that are causing some minor problems.
