Hey all, well I'm sure you can by the title of this article I'm gonna talk about who Marvel and DC comics should bring back and allow new titles to be added to their listings. Now the one thing we see in both Marvel and DC comics is that they tend to milk a certain character and their franchise, the best known examples are the X-men titles and Batman. These two have to me the most spin off titles for each respectful company, while some of them are good, some are mediocre, bad, alter continuity, or are separate from continuity and that quickly adds confusion to current or new readers. I myself tend to steer clear from most of the X-men titles, the only one I am currently reading is the Jason Aaron run of Wolverine, which is a good separation from the main line continuity, and I am reading only Batman and Robin, but I will also be reading Batman Inc once it is released. The best known character that is basically flooding the market is Deadpool, which to me is basically Marvel's way of apologizing for the hack job of Deadpool in the Wolverine origins movie. To me Deadpool shouldn't be all over the place, he should be a random cameo into a title or issue, not a real main attraction. Anyway, since many titles are flooding the market, because these companies know what works and rather than make something new they just rehash the title and just make a total spinoff of it.
Now I have nothing against these titles or the fans that love these titles, its my opinion on this matter, so don't take it out on me. My point is that there are many characters that deserve a rebirth or resurgence and that if the companies play their cards right we can see them brought back in a great way and can be done really well without fans questioning it. Since Brightest day has revived 12 heroes and villains there may be a chance that we see some get a new series out of this, may be see a Hawk-man and Hawk-woman series, or a new Dead-man series, if Geoff Johns can pull it off, then many will follow and give them a chance. Same can be said with Marvel's Heroic Age, we have all kind of possibilities, which unlike Brightest Day, Heroic Age is the new era for Marvel Comics where Heroes are fighting bad guys and not amongst each other, Marvel has basically gone back to the “old days” of comics when they were fun reads but still have good story lines. We have two current events in the Heroic Age, first is Shadowland which is about Daredevil and his evil Hand Ninjas. The next one we are about to enter is the Chaos War, which is a cosmic event that's said to be bigger than the Infinity Gauntlet. Also there's a slight hint at what the following event would be after Chaos War, could be the Ultron War, which was seen in Avengers #5.
So with all that said, what are some titles that deserve comebacks in the new ages that Marvel and DC have brought us. So I'm gonna do a top 10 list: 5 Marvel Characters and 5 DC Characters, that deserve a new title and series run. Keep this in note, this excludes any of the universe's like the Ultimate universe, MC2, Earth-2, or any other universe outside of continuity. With that said let me begin with Marvel
MARVEL
#5. Machine Man(Aaron Stack): This dude is just awesome, as Linkara said he is like bender with bad-ass weaponry. His best appearance was him in NEXTWAVE which as I mentioned in one of my reviews as one of the best and funniest comics ever released. Machine Man has made appearances in two Marvel Zombie titles, but his character would seem like a fun addition into the Heroic Age.
#4. West Coast Avengers: We may currently have a bunch of Avenger titles already and a new one coming for the Chaos War, why not bring back the secondary team that became just as famous. The West Coast Avengers were created by teammate Hawk-eye after hearing Vision talking about expanding the Avenger influence. With the X-men now in the West Coast and the current Vampire situation, reinstating the old team with new members of familiar faces would be a cool thing to see.
#3. Sister Grimm(Nico Minoru): Just her, not the other members of the Runaways(I prefer her character). Sister Grimm aka Nico Minoru is the daughter of villains who are powerful mages who made a deal with three deities to protect their child as the three would destroy the world. She gained a powerful weapon known as the Staff of One and was a candidate for Sorcerer Supreme. Since Dark Reign she hasn't been seen at all in the Siege event and hasn't shown up in the Heroic age. If ever we get a mystic Avengers team, lets hope she is a member of it.
#2. Cloud 9(Abigail Boylen): While I read the Initiative series before I quit reading after Secret Invasion, there was one Character that I really like, and that was Cloud 9. She was the fish out of water character. The shy girl who had an incredible power and an expert marksmen. She has been seen all the way from the Initiative to the end of Dark Reign and Siege. Since then she flew off into the sky and be free. Hopefully we will see her return sometime in the Heroic Age
#1. Ghost Rider: Either one, Blaze or Ketch. Ghost Rider is the devil's bounty hunter, he goes around and finds the dark souls and punishes them of their evil ways. I made mention that Aaron's run is by far the best interpretation of the characters. We have Ghost Rider in the Shadowland event so there are hopes we see him brought back into the mainstream universe.
DC
#5. Etrigan(Jason Blood): Originally Created by the great Jack Kirby, Etrigan is an actual demon from hell summoned by Merlin and placed into the body of Jason Blood. Sort of the dark version of Marvel's Thor, Etrigan and Jason Blood share a single body and can switch place but only when speaking a certain poem. He has been seen during the events of Blackest Night and during a moment in Brightest Day. This could be done as a fun title with dark macabre stories. This is one title I would like to see because we need to see more mystical titles out there, and since Zatanna has become a hit, why not let this one join the listings.
#4. Terra(Atlee): One of my favorite characters from the first team behind Power Girl was the new Terra. Atlee is an alien being from under the earth's crust and lives on earth as a new hero in training. She befriends Power Girl and became her partner for a time. Since then she was last seen with her family relaxing after a terrifying moment in the Ultra Humanite's body. Those events seem to take place in and around the Blackest Night event so seeing her return in the Brightest Day could happen.
#3. Blue Beetle(Jaime Reyes): I know he had a series but he deserves another chance. The best thing about his original series was it had a lightness to it, had well developed characters and well established story lines. People sadly didn't give it a chance and now Jaime has become a great hero among iconic heroes and has gained notoriety amongst fellow heroes. A true character that deserves a real second chance at a title.
#2. Superboy Prime(Kal-El): Our Earth's Superman became a powerful baddie and has become infamous for his retcon punch. He has since be trapped in a fake Earth Prime and has been in Blackest Night and has since changed his tune and wants to live a happy life. Since then we haven't seen or heard much from this infamous character. Will he find a way to return into the Brightest Day event or in Flashpoint because of his fear of Speedsters.
#1. Deadman(Boston Brand): A former Trapeze artist now a dead crime fighter, Boston Brand has been revived by during the end of Blackest Night and has been a focal in Brightest Day, so far the only person to possess the White Lantern Ring and may now have a bigger part in the DCU. So after the events of Brightest Day and probably flashpoint we may see Deadman get his own series, but for now he is cool in Brightest Day.
And there you have my 10 characters that I would like to see get their own titles and perhaps they will get their own if only in a spin-off from either an Event or from another big title out there. What characters do you think deserve to be a new title. Let me hear what you all think. ComicCritic87 OUT!!!
