The cast of Red is looking very impressive. No doubt Helen Mirren will add some class to the proceedings. Its unclear as to the role she will play, but it seems most likely she will be playing Bruce Willis's characters former handler, apparently quite a small role in the comic. It remains to be seen if the part will be beefed up for the movie.

It wouldn't be the first change they would be making either! I have never read..Red, but apparently the movie will make some pretty significant changes to the Warren Ellis/Cully Hamner comic mini-series, including a less violent, more comedic tone(Yipeee) and name changes for major characters(Why the hell do they do that?)

Anyway, Robert Schwentke (Flight plan) directs and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are producing the action thriller, about a retired CIA agent who must fight for his life. Shooting is scheduled to start on January 11, 2010, and Summit Entertainment will release in North America on November 19, 2010.

Lorenzo Di Bonaventura producing?

Less violence and more comedy worked wonders for GI Joe.

People wanting to make a good movie should walk away the minute they hear his name.

@rickly and everyone else who said so...helen mirren is definitely one sexy grandma.

@spock, i am all for willis as the red skull. his voice, to my mind, is one very capable of producing the red skull voice i always imagined while reading captain america comics: a sort of stern-but-miserably-snotty, slow-talking, even-toned voice.

i know this is probably wishful thinking that many of you might disagree with, but i really hope that the makers of the captain america movie do not error on the side of making the skull a cg character that willis performs only with a matrix of motion capture points on his face. i'd like to see real makeup fx, latex fx and so on. the skull needs to have a decidedly human mode of facial expression, despite and especially because of the lack of...a face.

i really think 'red' will suffer if they try to write too much violence off in favor of ironic, lame, post-modern humor. i am not asking for 'sin city' violence here, but this is an eerily dark comic, if you want to fun it up, film 'the maxx' or something more weirdly slapstick in it's original form.
