Avengers: Infinity War star Scarlett Johansson received quite a lot of backlash when she signed on to play The Major in Rupert Sanders' live-action Ghost in The Shell movie, and now the actress is once again under fire for accepting the lead role in another Sanders project.

Johansson will play Dante ‘Tex’ Gill - a real-life figure who transitioned from female to male and ran several mob-connected massage parlors in 1970s Pittsburgh - in the movie Rub & Tug.

The actress has now come in for a lot of criticism from those that believe that Gill should be played by a trans person - and hasn't done herself any favors with her rebuttal. According to Bustle, Johansson stated: "Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment," when contacted for a response.

What do you guys make of this situation and others like it? Do you believe all minority roles should be played by minorities, or should the best person for the job get the part? Drop us a comment in the usual place.

@THRILLHO - agreed.
maybe they will recall when Shakespearean actors played all roles with men no matter what gender or affiliation. ..and isn't that the beginning of the modern stage?

@JonC - have you ever stopped to wonder why those plays only featured male actors?

Bringing that up actually supports the people being upset about Johansson taking on this role.

It's called acting. Why can't people cast who they want to and work with who they want to? It's their money and their vision. Let them do their art, and then you have every right not to watch it if you don't want.

LaserKing - 7/4/2018, 5:46 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - I agree that it is acting. You also want a proven marketable person for you movie as well. May as well find real people with super powers to play our superheroes. (not really, but you know what I mean)

@LaserKing - They may as well chastise Spielberg for letting an English actor play a historic American president. It's such silly nonsense.

@MosquitoFarmer - I think it depends.

English actor playing American characters? We are talking about where a person was born and I think that's ridiculous.

White actor have a role based on an Asian character?
The question becomes why couldn't you get an Asian actor?

The tried and true "This was the best actor available" is nonsense to me. All those actors out there and you just chose this really popular actor?

In this case though. Last I checked Scarlett was a white woman. Which means she's very eligible for this role. That she did not transition into a man I feel is irrelevant. Also I'm trying find confirmation that the real person actually transitioned.

The core of the issue is about value. I feel Hollywood devalues certain groups of people.

@storyteller - well considering that actual Japanese people praised her casting since despite race scarlett Johansson looks just like the major, it really should be a matter of why not.

@storyteller - I agree with you largely, while still thinking that casting a role in a film that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars is beyond most folks on this website (myself included). It's easy to point to Hollywood as a whole, but the individuals in that whole are each trying to bring their dream to fruition. And imagine being told that you can get an A-list star like Scarlett Johansson to headline your movie and bring you some guaranteed box-office bucks... Why wouldn't you go for it? Short of thinking she is not fit for the part, or just not wanting to work with her, how can this possibly be a bad decision for them if they are happy with it? Put yourself in the director's position, and as long as it matches your vision, be told you can get an actor like Jack Nicholson or Tom Cruise to want to play your role. There is a reason why certain actors are sought after to work with. There are stars, and there are underrated actors. And then there are bad actors, and actors who are on the road to getting better if they aren't already great but under-seen.

Filling the quota to satisfy all parties of life is no way to go about making art or to express any given persons' personality. If each and every person is not allowed to be them self (short of outstanding circumstances), what is the point of expressing art?

If anything, I think a male should want to play this part...not really my type of movie though

This has nothing to do with comic book media. Or even action sci-fi. smh.
SimpleeComplex
SimpleeComplex - 7/4/2018, 8:05 AM
@Comicbookart - exactly my point. I made a similar comment and a smart alec commenter inaulted me because I was "not smart" to make the connection that the actor in question hs once starred in a CBM, which gives enough credence to write an article here. Apparently aNYthing can be posted here be cuz by 6° of separation any film and actor can be connected to CBM's. So I agree. Article has no relevance here.

I don’t rate Scarlett too highly. I like some of her stuff, but I’m largely indifferent to her as an actress. I’m totally on her side here though. With her voice, I think she could pull off (PI) this character fairly well.

If I recall correctly, bob Dylan was played by cate Blanchett. According to twitter logic, she deprived a male a job they are rightly qualified for

TheSanitizer - 7/4/2018, 5:46 AM
They need to simply ignore these complaints. It’s absolutely ridiculous.
It’s a movie and they are casting an actor. That simple.

What next?? When they decide to make the next Sci-fi space movie should Hollywood try to cast real life aliens? Because only a real alien can play an alien in a movie. How dare they!
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 7/4/2018, 5:52 AM
@TheSanitizer - so transgender people = Aliens?
Pedrito

@LEVITIKUZ - Some people will say aliens do exist.
TheSanitizer
TheSanitizer - 7/4/2018, 6:11 AM
@LEVITIKUZ -
No, that’s not the argument. An actor is cast to portray a character. The actor should not ‘need’ to be like the character in real life.

@LEVITIKUZ - yes. [frick] it. to tickle your SJW internet bravado, why not. transgender people equal aliens.
Larebel24
Larebel24 - 7/4/2018, 6:28 AM
@LEVITIKUZ -I think his point is you don't have to be transgender to play a transgender...it's acting...do you have a list of transgender qualified actors for the role?....if so can we see the list and they can play the part...
