Johnny Depp Takes Aim At "Dreck" Hollywood Movies And Compares Studio Bosses To "Glorified Accountants"

Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has made his feelings known about mainstream Hollywood movies and doesn't hold back while sharing a scathing assessment of studio bosses. Read on for details...

Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts star Johnny Depp appears to be on the verge of a comeback. That comes after several years of making headlines following a messy, acrimonious divorce from Aquaman star Amber Heard.

Depp has been persona non grata in Hollywood since 2020 when he lost a libel case against The Sun after being branded a "wife beater." He'd later pick up a victory in his defamation case against Heard and has since focused on European cinema.

Next up for him is Jeanne Du Barry and it appears the actor is keen to continue making movies like that instead of taking centre stage in your typical blockbusters.

"By and large, for the majority of the years I’ve been wandering around aimlessly talking to people, they really want the same thing," Depp says. "They don’t want to be fed dreck. They’re happy when they experience something new or different."

"So that’s why I’ve always felt, as an actor, it’s your responsibility. When you come out of the gate each time...you’re putting as much at stake as anybody."

No longer forced to place nice with Hollywood executives, Depp has no qualms about making his feelings known when it comes to studio bosses.

"They’re disposable and they realise it," he states. "Glorified accountants who have the ability to press the green light and make studio films...but they press the green light, they spent s***loads of money."

"Budgets are ridiculous on these films...some romantic comedy with two very popular people. People - the real people - they’re sick of it."

It's hard to say whether Depp considers superhero movies to be among the "dreck" he refers to here, though that last comment does sound like a shot at Anyone But You starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney (which garnered strong reviews and performed well at the box office).

Whether Depp will get a chance to make a mainstream comeback remains to be seen...or whether he even wants to, for that matter. There have been rumblings about the actor returning to Pirates of the Caribbean, though Disney would almost certainly face criticism for bringing him back as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Still, many seem ready to see Depp make a return and would welcome him becoming a fixture in theaters again. His box office drawing power was on the decline before 2020, but half a decade removed, that may well have changed.

As always, let us know your thoughts on the comments in the usual place.

I think Godzilla Minus One has really shown how messed up the Hollywood Studio system really is these days when it comes to unnecessarily large budgets

@xfan320 - foreign movies are much cheaper in general, it's impossible to make Godzilla Minus One on nearly the same budget in Hollywood because US has the highest price tags for everything, including salaries.

Here come the disney shill hollywood experts coming to take a dump on somebody who’s lived and experienced the industry for 40+ years.

@Matchesz - he is right, as would most of your local “Disney shills” will tell you (as they’re mostly just not right wingers on this website you disagree with)

He’s 100% right. On big studio films you have INSANE budgets given that make you think the money is going to set, costumes and CG. It isn’t exactly, though.
It’s going to producers, celebrities and stars.
The rest? Not so much.

These movies could be made on 50M budgets if the previously named group earned as much as the rest of the crew.
People keep blaming CGI Studios because CG is the cool new thing to hate, which is disheartening because the rates for CG staff have been going lower than MTG does on Trump.

The main argument to overpay stars like Vin Diesel (who got 30M for FastX, later also an undisclosed producers fee) is that their name alone does PR…..which is BS as there already is a marketing budget. One you should take these extra costs out of if that’s the logic behind marketing.
Not that Blumhouse has a better way by retroactive performance based payments given the BO numbers.

As for producers, celebrity “writers” to only give their name and greedy in-name-only producers? We all know they’re useless fluff

Hes right but, actors also making 20 mil a movie isn't helping either.

@valmic - yeah, it's insane to see how much actors get paid. I get they're the faces of franchises, but it just doesn't feel right when I read about overworked, underpaid VFX artists.

Depp’s last good movie was 21 Jump Street and he was in it for less than five minutes. Less is more with this guy.

@regularmovieguy - yeah, but he has an excuse.

He spent years getting the turd out of his bed.

@regularmovieguy

he looks good for someone that has been on drugs since forever and with his age.

I was horrified how Richie Sambora looks.

Hollywood isn't a sustainable industry, tbh.
Or pretty close to not being.

You hardly get art or passion projects from studios anymore. The budgets are definitely hyper inflated and a big budget also doesn't mean that a movie will be good. Focusing on quality content and getting it right the first time can cut costs by reducing the need for reshoots

I can see Depp taking centre stage in something akin to Birdman.

Doesn't go just for movies. For games and tv shows big budgets aren't sustainable either. I rather get five 50 million project each year, than one 250 million project every five years.

Depp knows the truth about Hollywood,it makes a load of crap these days, you do get the odd movie that is worth watching but most of it is dog shit.
