"Nolanites" vs. "Marvelites" - Who's Got it right?

It's seems you're either a "Nolanite" or "Marvelite". Does it matter?

What is a "Nolanite"? Generally, it's assumed to be someone who thinks that Nolan can do no wrong. Who blindly excepts that whatever he does ,or makes is going to be brilliant and a stroke of genius. They are people who believe that Nolan has single-handedly saved the 'Batman' franchise and forever established a precedent that ALL film-makers tasked with the responsibly of helming a CBM must aspire to.

He's the man who brought 'realism ' to the CBM genre- the 'Godfather', if you will, to serious CBM production. No longer is cheesy, pandering film-making a norm in the CBM film world, no, Nolan showed the industry , nay the WORLD how it's really done!

Realistically let's face it, Nolan has yet to make a stinker. Spielberg, Cameron, Lucas, Ridley Scott, Scorsese, Coppala, etc. they all made less than respectable films- forgettable in the least.
But Nolan, not so.
1)Memento
2)Batman Begins
3)The Prestige
4)The Dark Knight
5)Inception

So is a "Nolanite" fanatical, or just honest. Well, if you're a critic of any film listed above(he also made 'Insomnia' , but I've never seen it) then you have a valid argument, but one difficult to defend.

On the other hand, we have "Marvelites" who similarly feel Marvel and their films are redeemable regardless how flawed one might say they are.

Now that Marvel has control of most of their properties, we have seen an improvement in quality and story-telling , with some very stunning casting choices for lead and supporting roles that have paid off tremendously.
So far Marvel has NOT put out a sticker like 'Green Lantern' and doubt they will.
Yes, most films have been 'safe' story-telling and nothing "amazing-!" has happened in any of their films yet, but many "Marvelites" believe 'The Avengers' will correct that neglect , and raise the bar of CBM's yet again!

One must keep in mind Marvel DID NOT have supreme control of a character until 'Iron-man' , so everything before that can't be 100% attributed to them.

There's a bright future for Marvel because of the vast, untapped properties they own not yet brought to the big screen.
So far, they have produced:
1) Iron-man
2)The Incredible Hulk
3)Iron-man 2
4) Thor
5)Captain America

Now nobody can honestly say any of these movies sucked, because they didn't.
Could they have been better? Yes, but a "Marvelite" can say the same of 'The Dark Knight', so it's subjective.
But overall , MARVEL has thus far done a pretty good job!

There are of course DC fanboys, who can only really hang their hat on the first and second 'Superman' movies and the animated films as exceptions to Nolan's work.
Some might say Burton's 1st and 2nd 'Batman ' films were respectable, but again, compared to Nolan's take on the character, they just seem like live action cartoons.

So who's right?

Actually , BOTH ARE!

Marvel has a catalog of films to their credit that are indisputably entertaining and true to the source material.

Christopher Nolan saved 'Batman' in film form(and DC as well in the process)
by offering fanboy and the general public alike two AWESOME 'Batamn' flicks!

The world is a better place because we can pop 'Iron-man' into the DVD, or watch 'The Dark Knight Rises' on our laptop while waiting at the airport terminal for our flight...that's late AGAIN!

So don't hate each other- no arguing necessary , because both "Nolanites" and "Marvelites" have the 'high ground' in this argument.

One last point: I apologies to ALL who don't enjoy disputing this subject. I guess you'll all have to just hold hands and sing 'Kumbaya'!

Then you have the sad children from both sides that think you're "lying to yourself" if you don't agree with them or that you're somehow "scared shitless" of their favorite movie yet to come out doing better than your favorite movie yet to come out. You know who you are. Keep ruling your fictitious kingdoms with those iron fists of anonymity. Yeah. You go girls.

So I agree, both are right, but these people I mention are not.

"No longer is cheesy, pandering film-making a norm in the CBM film world"
however,I don't agree with this point.there hasn't been a single CBM that follows TDK formula, not even from DC (Green Lantern anyone?)

I don't know why, maybe it's because other directors are afraid of taking more risks,or maybe is just Nolan's style that can not be easily repoduced.

IMO Marvel has more to prove with the Avengers than Nolan does with TDKR. If the Avengers fails than almost every Marvel movie is in jeopardy, especially since the majority of the actors are signed on to multiple contracts. If TDKR fails it wont matter since it's the last in the Franchise, and Warner will most likely reboot anyway.

@Spidey91- It could be the studios.
Some like to have a stranglehold on projects rather than trust the director's vision and let him create unmolested.

Marvel and Nolan make completely different movies which can't really compared easily. If I want to see an action packed movie with great action and fun I watch a Marvel movie. When I want to watch a psychological thriller I watch a Chris Nolan movie.

I don't think you have any business writing an article about Nolan's filmography when he's only made 7 films, 1 of which you can't be bothered to see and the other of which (FOLLOWING) you apparently don't even know existed. The guy has only made 7 movies and you havent even seen 28 percent of them? And you're a Nolan fan? Watch Insomnia, it's not hard to find and it's a brilliant movie. and watch Following, it's on Netflix instant watch right now. Get your ducks in a row then write your article.

By the way, any article ending with "both sides are right" is weak sauce. Doesn't matter if its true. Why waste our time with painfully obvious observations that anyone could make? Reserve your energies for an article that will tell us something we don't know. Don't compare him to filmmakers who have made 20+ films (thus more chances to stink). Cameron is a valid comparison because he has only made 7 real films as well. And of those 7, which pray tell is the stinker that you're insinuating he's guilty of? ALL of Cameron's films are either critical or commercial successes, or both. You're making it sound like Nolan is the only game in town and that he's done something Spielberg and Scorsese and Cameron haven't. You're wrong.

Also try the spell check option. I kill cause I care.

headlopper Awesome write up dude! Agree 100% just glad that movies like these are being made instead of *cough* Green Lantern *cough* Daredevil *cough* Fantastic Four *cough*

Seriously though anyone which has a problem with the Marvel films should just watch the Fantastic Four... then they'd know what BAD is.

On that note, I think addressing the fact that there ARE sides only encourages people to pick on. I chose instead to shun reality so that I am frustrated every time I see a debate between these two sides.

While it's all a matter of taste, a few stats to consider:

Nolan's films have a combined 21 oscar nominations, 6 of which they've won.
Marvel Studios' films have earned 3 Oscar nominations, winning none. Keep in mind the ceremony in which Thor and Captain America would be nominated for hasn't happened yet.

Christopher Nolan has five films: Memento, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception in the IMDb Top 250.
Marvel Studios has none.

Nolan combined box office - 2,463,327,323
Marvel Studios combined box office - 2,289,452,584

Chris Nolan makes some good movies, but some of them are just way too overrated. I enjoyed "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight", but they did poor jobs with the interpretations of the villains. I loved "The Prestige" and found "Inception" to be quite entertaining. He's not film genius, though.

As for Marvel: I'm a die-hard Marvel fan, but in no way will I say that the MCU films are the greatest CBMs of all time.
