Hello friends. Well things like this seem to come and go with the comic industry. We have our favorite writers and artists and when they leave a title its a sad day. Like when JMS finished his run of Thor and was handed over to Gillen or Greg Pak leaving Hulk and Leob coming in, its always rough transitions from one set we read and appreciated for brining the characters we enjoy reading and making them great and refreshing from the other comics out there, since I read most of these in TPB and never really felt that kind of fandom when a change occurs, but I now can feel that now that artist Amanda Conner and writers Jim Palmiotti and Justin Gray are no longer doing Power Girl.
A recent article on CBR.com article had them interviewed and they said that they were signed for the first 12 issues and would then depart once the 12 were done and work on other titles. What I liked about this team was that they made this title very fun, refreshing, and for the most part doesn't takes itself very serious. To me this is the best version of Power Girl since well since she appeared. Most of us know that Power Girl is probably one of the biggest retconned heroine next to Donna Troy.
Power Girl aka Kara Zor-L aka Karen Starr was originally the earth-2 universe equivalent to super girl, having the same powers as her but being slightly stronger. Not to mention that Power Girl has one of the best bodies in the universe and has a costume that leaves little to the imagination. However during the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths she was one of a very few amount of survivors of Earth-2 and she was considered an anomaly amongst her friends. It was then decided to change her origins making Superman the only Kyrptonian alive, so they made her origin that of an Altlantian sorcerers daughter, this lasted for quite some time. Then thanks to Geoff Johns with Infinite Crisis, her origin and true continuity was restored.
Soon after she was given her first series simply titled Power Girl. I read the first 4 issues on-line via a torrent but I got hooked and then went to my local comic shop and picked up issue 5 onward. What I love about the series is that its not entirely fan service and cheesy writing and cheap action scenes. This was a well thought out series and we get a few good arcs in these 3 peoples run. The overall arc is about the Ultra Humanite and his woman Satanna while 2 arcs are sorta filler but characters from those arc make cameos in issue 12. As I mentioned earlier about fan service, I'm glad they never over emphasized Power Girl and her ample chest, they acknowledge them and for the most part she's in on the joke and makes some teases but all done tastefully and never crude, except issue 12 where it was basically a fan service moment but I consider that part of their farewell, just give them want they want kinda moment.lol. Anyway, This series as a whole had some great and memorable moments, I won't say what they are due to spoilers, but they were funny and showed that the title is having fun.
One thing that bothered me was I remember seeing some early reviews by IGN and they were like hits and misses in the beginning but I haven't kept track with IGN so I'm sure how they fared up til now, but it seems like Power Girl does have its strong Fan base and hopefully won't be ending anytime soon. Starting next month we get our next team taking over the title. The writer will be Judd Winick and the artist will be Sami Basri, I have not seen any of their previous works but I have some hesitation with them but at the same time I have high hopes they keep up with great stories and writing.
So in closing, I wish the old team best wishes with their future works and endeavors. You brought a character who has been screwed with for so many years and made her fun and enjoyable to read. Best of luck with the new team and what they have instore for her and the readers. Til next time BlackAirs OUT!!!
