Sam Raimi To Direct Nemisis?

If you haven't heard of Nemisis, its the latest(but as yet unreleased) project from Mark Millar(Kick Ass, Wanted). A couple of posters for the series garnered some controversy a while ago because Millar taglined them, "What if Batman was The Joker?"..and on the other, "What if Batman was a c#nt?". Very subtle. Anyway, thats the premise. What if a Bruce Wayne type turned all of his resources to being a villain rather than a hero.

According to a post on Millar's blog, Sam Raimi and Guy Ritchie are names that are currently being floated to direct a film interpretation of Nemisis. At the moment, though, this appears to be pure speculation on his part. The movie adaptation hasn’t, by all accounts, even been greenlit yet. And the comics themselves, drawn by frequent Millar collaborator Steve McNiven, don’t hit the shelves until March this year.

“The bad news for us is that he’s the world’s only super-villain,” says Millar. “That means he’s got freeze guns and jump-jets and all these James Bond gadgets and he’s using them against us.

“To entertain himself, he picks a different cop every year and makes his life a misery. The book opens with him [frick]ing over Japan’s top cop, and then our story, the mini-series, takes place as he shifts his attention to Washington and his first American attacks.”

It does sound pretty cool. And Millar is a great writer, so hopefully its something worth waiting for. And even though the movie has no greenlight, with Wanted and Kick Ass out there, expect Nemisis to follow suit.

Very cool, never read the comic so I can't suggest anything smart. Wait STEVE BUSCEMI for NEMESIS!!! ha my first fancast.

Either way this looks pretty sweet. I have to say that I'd rather see Guy Ritchie direct over Sam Raimi.

I reckon they just see a cash cow in Millar. He seems to be writing for the movies now. He's not the only one of course. I mean I don't mind, but I would rather they focused on making the titles that are already out there!

As for the comic, yeah I'm the same. I don't mind a story about a villain but there has to be some type of protagonist to balance it out. I'm sure there will be though. He probably won't win...

Question...

IF this is made into a movie, wont DC Comics/WB sue?!?

Damn these flash videos! No offense to the guys who run the sight, but is anyone else tired of these?Damn near every sight I go to has one that plays automatically, instantly draining my ram. Then I have to restart my browser nearly every time. It's very annoying.

Anyway, I'm not sure if this will work as a film.I don't think the majority of people want to see a movie were a villain is the main character.Especially if there's nothing redeemable about him, or if he isn't punished.I do enjoy some villain/anti-hero books like Dark Avengers and Secret Six, but those characters aren't wholly evil.I certainly wouldn't want to read a comic series or watch a movie were someone like the Joker was the main character.

I've been hearing people say Millar is currently more concerned with making films. He creates a film idea then solicits it as a comic book first, to give it the extra clout of being based on a property and then makes the movie before the comic is even finished.I could care less, but it seems alot of people in the comic community are a little miffed at this.I've even heard people say they won't read this or Kick-Ass because they know it's only created to boost a movie, and is not really a serious comic property.Their loss, I guess.

Lee, they actually already gave Millar some shit over the posters because he used Batman and The Joker. But if a movie was ever made he would have to scrap those comparrisons pretty sharpish I would imagine.

Keeny, no, they do my head in too to be honest, i just lower my speakers down when i come on here!

This does look like it will be cool. Having said that I have to admit like some of you have already said, I have never been able to get myself in to following the villain. I won't be reading it.
A thief, sure. But a cold blooded kiler, never concerned me.

Anything that Miller writes (Civil War, Old Man Logan etc) is almost guaranteed to be excellent so I cant wait for this!

The fact that you're following a villain who's apparently a full on evil bastard doesnt bother me in the least because it sounds like a pretty unique concept to me and something that would definitely be interesting to read!

Obvioulsy, there's not a lot of info about the tone or story of this comic book but Sam Raimi is a great choice for director IMO! :)

If your article is as poorly written (both grammar and spelling) as your post I'd sooner gouge my eyes out with a butter knife.

I mean really, "lier", "hurt", "band". Sweet Jeebus, pass 5th grade english before you go writing for everyone to see.

josh: I agree, I love Millers work and this will probably be great and it is a unique concept.

I for one though, have never been concerned with what makes a dead seious, cold hearted evil bastard tick.

I don't care what brought him to that state or "made" him that way, the fact is the thing that remains.

Getting inside his mind or thoughts, doesn't interest me unless there is a bullet there to see.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 1/15/2010, 8:29 AM
Mmm, I wouldn't agree with than entirely. I have seen and read some things that focus on a pretty ruthless villain and enjoyed them. They are dark obviously, but still interesting. Like No Country For Old Men..sure, it had Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin as foils for Bardem, but there is no doubt that he is the character that is taking center stage. Same goes for as Belgian movie called man Bites Dog, about an absolute vicious bastard of a killer..no protagonist in it(except for his victims) but still a good movie. It can work if done right. Also see, There Will Be Blood.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 1/15/2010, 8:46 AM
Ror: I never said I wouldn't see the movie. I know this sounds stupid, but I can watch a movie about an evil bastard, but I can't get into a book about one.

A movie just shows you his actions( for the most part)so you can see just how evil or crazy he is.

A book, most times will try and take you inside their train of thought. Wether or not it is intended as such, to me it always comes across as some small sort of justification or sympathetic plea.
IMO there is no justification or any reason for sympathy for a character of that sort.

Like I said, I'm sure it sounds stupid but thats how it affects me personaly.

I'm sure in the end, Nemesis will create his Hero, leading to his own destruction. And it'll be a joker like character but he'll be good. A good happy clown. A REAL badass mime!

I'm kinda getting tired of all this what if batman or superman was this way or that. Write your own original stories without basing them off of established characters.

Like the movie Wanted was so different from its' original concept they should've just called it something else like, "The Syndicate". And most of those characters were based on well knowns from the big two. Millar does this alot eh?

Christian Bale for Nemesis.

Also am I the only person here who likes Sam Raimi? I mean Spider-man 3 was too much crammed in and it wasn't great but I loved the first 2. Not to mention some of his other non Spider-man ventures.

As for this, I think I'd have to read the comics before knowing who would be a good director(by then I'm sure the film will be well in to production).

Raimi is a great director. Some fans just can't let go of Spider man 3's short comings, and conveniently forget how good the other 2 movies were, Darkman, Drag Me To Hell, A Simple Plan, Evil Dead 1 and 2, Crimewave, Quick And The Dead and The Gift..oh unless of course they don't rate them either. Like I always say, no accounting for taste.

I still find it hard to believe some of you guys think Millar walks on water or something.

I mean seriously, exactly how far does this project go, either in print or on the screen, until Warner's legal department steps in and rips him a new one for stealing their characters for his latest pet project?

Ugh
Ugh - 1/15/2010, 6:29 PM
Some of you never read the comic "Wanted" before, huh? Wesley goes on a few murder sprees and talks about getting away with raping an A-list actress. Still thought the story was amazingly well written, funny and the last panels made me think and lmfao.

I would not want raimi to do this. Now, you might say I am a raimi hater, but Im not.
I just believe that he does not have a good vision when it comes to comic book movies, and this new comic is on the cusp of being one of the greats.

Miller's books are awesome, they are new fresh innovative and the bring a spark to the comic book industry (as well as literature) that is much needed. I dont think Raimi has the ability and vision to really bring these adaptations to the big screen.

Another director, maybe Guy Ritchie or someone else would really have a grasp on this movie and its direction. I think it'd be great and has true potential.

Batman as a villain, damn... nice...

@TheCritic -- Everything from Millar that I've looked at has left me completely and thoroughly unimpressed and disinterested.
