Sounds Chitty! Dick Van Dyke Reveals He Was Almost JAMES BOND & Knocks Daniel Craig

Dick Van Dyke, 87, is an American actor, comedian, writer, singer, dancer, and was apparently almost 007. In a recent interview with Kevin Pollak, Van Dyke, explained that Cubby Broccoli inquired if the actor had any interest in replacing Sean Connery. Come check it out.

Dick Van Dyke, is best known for his musicals, Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and his long-running television series The Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis: Murder. Apparently, while he was filming 1968's Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which is based on an Ian Fleming novel, Van Dyke was approached by the film's producer, Cubby Broccoli, who also produced the James Bond films.

“I was doing Chitty,” Van Dyke said, referring to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, “Sean Connery had spoken about leaving the Bond pictures. He had done several at the time. Cubby Broccoli actually pulled me in and asked me if I wanted to do Bond.”

A quizzical Pollack replied, "No, he didn't," but Van Dyke emphatically replied, "Yes, he did!"

"I said, 'Have you heard [my British accent]?" Van Dyke said. "And [Broccoli] said, 'Oh, that's right! Forget it!'"

After that, Pollak and Van Dyke discussed current James Bond, Daniel Craig ("Skyfall"). Van Dyke praised Craig for being a "wonderful" actor, but didn't think he had the "panache to be Bond."

It's hard to see a young version of Van Dyke as Bond, especially since, at that time, he was known for making goofy faces and for his physical comedy, prat falls and such. Connery did leave the franchise, and Broccoli would replace him with George Lazenby for 1969's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."

It begins around the 28:30 mark

Van Dyk would have been a good Joker for sure. I also kind of like the idea of Daniel Craig for Luthor.

I think he could've made a decent Derek Flint, had they done more movies and James Coburn, like Connery, left them after doing a few.

Gotta love Dick Van Dyke. The man is a legend. Personally, I think he'd have made a great Bond.

As much as I like Dick Van Dyke, I don't think his performance would have been much different from Roger Moore...except he's not British.

Would have been interesting too see but then again he's not British. I remember when they offered the role of Bond to Clint Eastwood and he respectively turned it down because he was not british.

As for Daniel Craigs performance as Bond...he's pretty good.

on bond not being pache; thats because thats what theyre going for. they wanted a guy that looks like he's been through some rough sh*t, not someone who could have been on the cover of GQ

Dick Van Dyke is a legend, but I don't think he would've made a good James Bond. Also, Daniel Craig does have the panache for Bond.

Now, if he would've said George Lazenby, I would agree with him.

It's very interesting about the actors that were considered to play James Bond. I mean, Clint Eastwood and James Brolin? Clint Eastwood turned down the role, because he told producers they needed to hire a British actor. James Brolin would've played James Bond in Octopussy, but was ruled out after Roger Moore decided to reprise the role(he considered leaving the 007 franchise).

I'm American, and I don't think an American actor should ever play James Bond. But hearing and seeing stuff like this is still interesting none the less.
