The following was posted by Galactus in response to complaints about the Wolverine cameo spoiler:
Galactus Insert: I posted this on the previous page, but I'll do it here to confirm that Josh isn't responsible for boldy reporting this spoiler. It was I, mighty Galactus who controls what is NEWS on this site, and this qualifies. I put it on the top story, and changed the headline, and added the actual scene. If you are someone who doesn't like spoilers about comic book movies, I ask, what the hell are you here for? This site is devoted to reporting anything and everything considered NEWS about comic book movies. Period. If we treat every piece of news as a spoiler, this would be a blank site. So think of it as an early Christmas present. Frankly, I believe most of you whiney biatches secretly LOVE a good spoiler and you just want something to complain about. And just for future reference CBM REPORTS SPOILERS/NEWS ABOUT COMIC BOOK MOVIES!And that is why you come here.
This isn't the first time we've had a major spoiler posted prominently on the front page of the website. Back when Iron Man 2 was released, there was a video on the front page title "Iron Man 2 Post-Credits Scene!" And what was the picture displayed for the video? A screenshot of Thor's hammer. So basically, the whole surprise of the scene was taken away because someone either didn't respect the readers who like to avoid spoilers or was just being careless. Was it annoying? Yes. Was it a huge deal. Not really. The readers expressed their annoyance and the picture was changes, saving the surprise for anyone who hadn't yet seen it. We forgave this, moved on and hoped it was something we could all learn from.
Now here we are, over a year later and history seems to be repeating itself. We were told in one headline about a surprise cameo in X-men First Class. Then the headline was changed to " UPDATE: Wolverine's X-Men: First Class Cameo Revealed!" As if that was not enough, when we visited the site, we were greeted with a big picture of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine on the banner staring us in the face with the headline boldly written across it. I must say, I'm disappointed both at the fact that this was done and the manner in which the complaitns were addressed. Let's think about what a spoiler is. Here's how wikipedia defines it.
"Spoiler is slang for any element of any summary or description of any piece of fiction that reveals any plot element which will give away the outcome of a dramatic episode within the work of fiction, or the conclusion of the entire work. It can also be used to refer to any piece of information regarding any part of a given media. Because enjoyment of fiction sometimes depends upon the dramatic tension and suspense which arises within it, the external revelation of such plot elements can 'spoil' the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced."
I'd like to emphasize the point "spoil the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced." There are a lot of different kinds of fans on this site. Some people love to get every detail they can about movies before they see them. Other people, like myself, like to minimize the amount they know about the plot of a movie and the scenes they watch before seeing the movie. For me, there is nothing like the first time you watch a movie. You can only experience the effect of seeing something for the first time once. When that is all part of the first viewing, it enhances the experience. When some of the surprises are revealed before the movie, it's sometimes interesting for a little while after I find it out, but when I see the movie, the surprise has lost its affect lessening the experience of the movie overall.
With these two types of viewers, it's important to respect both by giving them a choice. Give the people who like spoilers access to them but don't force the spoilers upon people who don't want them. This is done well often by some people who post spoiler warnings in the headlines of their article, but sometimes people seem to disregard the interests of a significant portion of this site's population.
"And just for future reference CBM REPORTS SPOILERS/NEWS ABOUT COMIC BOOK MOVIES! And that is why you come here." We come here for different reasons and it's presumptuous to assume that everyone here feels the same way. I don't expect every detail of every movie to be treated as a major spoiler, but I believe that on a site that is more than just a news site, but a fan community, users should be considerate of everyone whether they're writing an article or posting in the comments section.
