The following was posted by Galactus in response to complaints about the Wolverine cameo spoiler:

Galactus Insert: I posted this on the previous page, but I'll do it here to confirm that Josh isn't responsible for boldy reporting this spoiler. It was I, mighty Galactus who controls what is NEWS on this site, and this qualifies. I put it on the top story, and changed the headline, and added the actual scene. If you are someone who doesn't like spoilers about comic book movies, I ask, what the hell are you here for? This site is devoted to reporting anything and everything considered NEWS about comic book movies. Period. If we treat every piece of news as a spoiler, this would be a blank site. So think of it as an early Christmas present. Frankly, I believe most of you whiney biatches secretly LOVE a good spoiler and you just want something to complain about. And just for future reference CBM REPORTS SPOILERS/NEWS ABOUT COMIC BOOK MOVIES!And that is why you come here.

This isn't the first time we've had a major spoiler posted prominently on the front page of the website. Back when Iron Man 2 was released, there was a video on the front page title "Iron Man 2 Post-Credits Scene!" And what was the picture displayed for the video? A screenshot of Thor's hammer. So basically, the whole surprise of the scene was taken away because someone either didn't respect the readers who like to avoid spoilers or was just being careless. Was it annoying? Yes. Was it a huge deal. Not really. The readers expressed their annoyance and the picture was changes, saving the surprise for anyone who hadn't yet seen it. We forgave this, moved on and hoped it was something we could all learn from.

Now here we are, over a year later and history seems to be repeating itself. We were told in one headline about a surprise cameo in X-men First Class. Then the headline was changed to " UPDATE: Wolverine's X-Men: First Class Cameo Revealed!" As if that was not enough, when we visited the site, we were greeted with a big picture of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine on the banner staring us in the face with the headline boldly written across it. I must say, I'm disappointed both at the fact that this was done and the manner in which the complaitns were addressed. Let's think about what a spoiler is. Here's how wikipedia defines it.

"Spoiler is slang for any element of any summary or description of any piece of fiction that reveals any plot element which will give away the outcome of a dramatic episode within the work of fiction, or the conclusion of the entire work. It can also be used to refer to any piece of information regarding any part of a given media. Because enjoyment of fiction sometimes depends upon the dramatic tension and suspense which arises within it, the external revelation of such plot elements can 'spoil' the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced."

I'd like to emphasize the point "spoil the enjoyment that some consumers of the narrative would otherwise have experienced." There are a lot of different kinds of fans on this site. Some people love to get every detail they can about movies before they see them. Other people, like myself, like to minimize the amount they know about the plot of a movie and the scenes they watch before seeing the movie. For me, there is nothing like the first time you watch a movie. You can only experience the effect of seeing something for the first time once. When that is all part of the first viewing, it enhances the experience. When some of the surprises are revealed before the movie, it's sometimes interesting for a little while after I find it out, but when I see the movie, the surprise has lost its affect lessening the experience of the movie overall.

With these two types of viewers, it's important to respect both by giving them a choice. Give the people who like spoilers access to them but don't force the spoilers upon people who don't want them. This is done well often by some people who post spoiler warnings in the headlines of their article, but sometimes people seem to disregard the interests of a significant portion of this site's population.

"And just for future reference CBM REPORTS SPOILERS/NEWS ABOUT COMIC BOOK MOVIES! And that is why you come here." We come here for different reasons and it's presumptuous to assume that everyone here feels the same way. I don't expect every detail of every movie to be treated as a major spoiler, but I believe that on a site that is more than just a news site, but a fan community, users should be considerate of everyone whether they're writing an article or posting in the comments section.

I know some of you are probably going to dismiss this article as whining or exaggerated outrage. I'm not angry and I'm not going to pretend like I've had any movies totally ruined for me. However, I think it's important to address issues that get ignored and are an annoyance to many members of this site. I'm quite sure that I'm not the only person who feels this is a problem.

Meh, maybe the BIG SPOILERS (take that as a warning anyone who's reading this comment) like Hugh Jackman cameoing in First Class, or details of a Post-Credit scene, or perhaps story details should put under a new 'Spoilers' tab? That way only little spoilers (like main castings, etc) make their way onto news.
And yeah, the big Wolverine splash was a bit ott.

Also, people come here for other things like Fan-Fic and Features too, not just the news, so it may be a good idea to avoid spoiling too much for the readers.

@ BIGBMH

i agree with you. I don't feel that the Wolverine cameo was a big spoiler though, because its not like it ruins any ploy points or anything.

however, the after credits scene for Iron Man 2 being spoiled was a little much.

personally, i don't care, I come here to learn things like that. BUT, i could see how it would irritate some people. Galactus explained it as reporting news, but i think there's a big difference between "news" and "spoilers". These things are certainly spoilers :)

@CorndogBurglar, I agree that this spoiler wasn't major since it doesn't really have to do with the plot. It's just one of those little things. It's like how we all know that Stan Lee is going to have a cameo in a movie, but part of the fun is being taken by surprise because you don't know when or how it's going to happen. In this case we didn't know Wolverine was going to have a cameo so it was kind of a guessing game like who might they show from the other movies.

@ncreb, I think a spoiler section might be useful, but we don't really have that many spoilers coming that often and it usually works when they just label an article as containing a spoiler. Also, good point about newcomers.

@teabag, Yeah, I guess there's that too. :)

@GillytheKid33, "dont read the stuff you dont wanna read." I don't read the stuff I don't want to read. However, when a big picture and a headline are right there when I come to the site, it takes away my option to select what I want to find out. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

Aight, I hear you on that. But I'm one of the few people that enjoys seeing/hearing about spoilers just so I can get a leg up on the people I go see these flicks with. But I'll give you the headline thing with Wolvie yesterday.

deanwilkins - 5/25/2011, 12:08 PM
I agree that spoilers should be removed from the headlines. At the very least, don't be so blatant about them.

Of course, if you come to this site, you know things will be spoiled. So I'm not sure why people are upset or surprised.

I'm more concerned about people who spam the comments, and of course, the haters.
BIGBMH
BIGBMH - 5/25/2011, 12:12 PM
@SHHH, I pretty much addressed that with Gilly 2 posts above your own. Did you even read the article? I'm not opposed to posting spoilers on the website. I'm opposed to making the spoiler part of the headline and putting it on the banner so that even if you don't click on the article, it's spoiled anyway.

Bizo
Bizo - 5/25/2011, 12:13 PM
Spoilers should be removed from headlines, I don't come here for spoilers, just to see how projects are progressing; it was a major let down having you ruin what would have been a fun surprise in the movie. So, as per Galactus' request, I'm not coming to this site anymore, he's obviously an idiot and there's more professional routes to go if I want to see trailers or costumes. Fire him and I would totally come back, his reporting was beneath sub par and his propensity to report bullsh!t was enormous.

GillytheKid33 - 5/25/2011, 12:16 PM
BUT! @Bigbmh
Its not like seeing those certain scenes is going to change your mind about seeing the movie or not. The IM2 hammer scene was kinda of obvious if you ask me. I mean we all knew there was ganna be a Thor shout out and it wasnt like we would have seen Hemsworth flying around or anything. And even though the Wolvie thing was shoved in our faces if it had been down the page a bit I think we all would have connected the dots if there was somthing like this...

Spoiler Alert!

Hugh Jackman will be in first class! Who will he play?!

@spider1489, READ THE ARTICLE BEFORE YOU COMMENT, THEN COME BACK WHEN YOU UNDERSTAND WHY YOUR COMMENT FAILS TO ADDRESS MY MAIN POINT!

Or maybe even just read the comment 2 above your own. Is it really that hard to read before you post a comment?

@Gilly, I've acknowledged that those 2 spoilers weren't really a huge deal. They're still the kind of thing that I would rather not know and would enjoy seeing it in the moviemore if I didn't know exactly what was coming.

i like spoilers but let me read the article to be spoiled. give me the option to read the headline without getting spoiled.
McGribble
McGribble - 5/25/2011, 12:20 PM
I have to agree with the no spoiler thing. It takes a great deal of self control to keep away from reading them. A logical solution to this problem is by creating a spoiler page separate to those posted on the main page. This way those who do not want to read them, will not even know about them unless they actually choose to go to the spoiler page. But those who do like reading spoilers can go to that page and spoil the surprise for themselves. This would then satisfy both parties in the best possible way...

If you think this is a bad idea, then you suffer from Ideophobia!
mattnotis
mattnotis - 5/25/2011, 12:20 PM
Put whatever you want in the articles. That's perfectly cool, IMHO. You have every right to post whatever you guys feel is newsworthy. It's the HEADLINES that irks me. If the main page just said "X-Men:First Class Mutant Cameo Revealed!" or something along those lines, I wouldn't bat an eye. I'd continue to a different article or news story. But the fact that it blatantly says Wolverine is in the movie is a bad way to go about revealing the information. But like I said, I don't care what information you guys post, it's HOW you go about posting it.

I actually found this site by googling "Transformers rumors and spoilers". There wasn't any real news or spoilers, but I was mesmerized by all the people in comments section arguing over something so infantile that I was intrigued to bookmark this site and travel to it daily.

If Anyone comes to this site and is "spoiled" by what's posted, too bad! Curiosity killed the cat and you did the typing.

I completely agree. Although I personally don't mind knowing all the details about a film before I see it, as soon as I saw the Wolverine pic on the front page I knew alot of people would be angry.
We should be given the option to have it spoiled.

But what gets me is when the people who don't wanna read spoilers click on an article labled 'SPOILER:' & comment saying they don't wanna spoil it for themselves. Therefore, preventing people from talking about it in the comments section.

Great write-up @BIGBMH
