The Ultimate Universe, whats all the hubbub

Figuring out why this series gets a lot of flack

Editorial Opinion

In my recent years of reading comics, I have been reading comics since the Watchmen movie was announced and being filmed. Before then I only heard about this Ultimates universe and how much different it is to the main universe. From what I read on-line the Ultimate universe has much deeper emphasis on super soldier's, technological, and mutants. While there are a few magical based characters, they aren't the main focus, the same can be said about extraterrestrial threats. When I started to read further into things I got to notice that there's people hating this universe. Comic reviewer Linkara did a review of Ultimates 3 and gave a quick summary of why the people don't like it as much. It seems that this universe takes away the long linage of continuity and story lines and more or less reboot these characters to get new readers involved into Marvel. This editorial is more of my perspective on it and see if I can show you all what I see in it.
Right off the bat the only Ultimate series I have read are Ultimates 1 and so far I have been following the Ultimate Lines Spider-man. I really enjoyed Ultimates because it felt like a blockbuster movie in a comic book format, the characters were enjoyable, the action was well paced, and the series was well written. As for the Spider-man series I'm reading, I do enjoy it, but since I have not read the series prior to the events of Ultimatum, I have no knowledge of how all the events have happened before it. I read the Ultimate Avengers but it seems to be taking way longer than expected to complete so I'm on hold with it. I haven't gotten a chance to read Ultimates 2 and I saw the horror of U3 so I will skip that one. As for the event Ultimatum, I heard enough crap-slinging words about it, so I anything I say only adds to the pile.
So as I stated, Why all the hate. Well I guess I can sum it up to 2 words: fan service. I'm not talking about the kind with skimpy schoolgirl outfits or nosebleed moments, I'm talking about all the subtle nods and credits to the main universe. From what I have seen in Linkara's review Wanda flirts with one of the robots(a nod to her and the vision in 616), in Spider-man they are doing a Spider-man and friends thing with iceman and the Human Torch, and in the last Ultimate avengers, they showed the Cosmic cube and Red Skull. Also in Ultimates 3 there is a scene with a supposed Donald Blake. While I'm for fan service and nods to other things, but when they become center stage in order to sell comics, its more of a gimmick than a tribute.
As for a film, we have the 2 animated films and it seems that the Avengers Movie will have more of a Ultimates feel but have the classic look, albeit they have the Jackson Fury, but hey, whatever works right.
In the end I don't entirely hate this universe, I think it's something Marvel took a risk on and it seems to sell comics, which seems to be their case right now. What's great about is that it has no affect on the 616 universe or any other universe at all. I bet there are fans who support this line but for me and a I'm sure a good number of people here, its not our cup of tea. All I can say is that I enjoyed the first part of the Ultimates and I'm not gonna follow them for now. I'm gonna start following the Avengers of the Heroic Age. Til next time, BlackAirs OUT!!

I have no problem with the Ultimate Universe. The only thing I didn't like was Ultimates 3, but that doesn't take anything away from the whole line.I know most people disliked Ultimatum, but I enjoyed it.I'm also liking the newer series.

I especially enjoyed Ultimate Spider-Man.It's pretty much the only comic I've read month to month since it debuted. While I like adult Peter Parker, high school Peter Parker is a helluva lot more fun.

if you havent read any ultimate spidey that happend before ultimatum, then why would you write about the ultimate universe? how can you sit here and judge a book that you havent read? those first 133 issues of ultimate spidey are WAY better than post-ultimatum japanimation ultimate spidey. the first 25 issues are incredible. ultimate green goblin is soooooo cool!!!! the fiery "hulk" green goblin is very different from his 616 counterpart (who is in my opinion the best marvel villian ever) but hes still as evil as ever. and ultimate xmen was awesome too. the cyclops-wolverine-jean love triangle gets so crazy that logan actually tries to kill scott! all those people who hate the ultimate universe are just haters. its an ALTERNATE UNIVERSE. so they can do whatever they want with it and not worry about it affecting the 616 universe. that said, i was a little shocked at how dirty they did wolverine in ultimatum, but after reading ultimate x #1 and seeing logans son jimmy, i have hope. watching magneto snap xaviers neck and seeing cyclops get a bullet through the head will forever be etched into my mind! if you can handle the differences with an open mind, the ultimate universe is definitley worth a read. go get ultimate wolverine vs hulk where hulk rips logan in half and youll see what im talking about.

@Kenny: I also love Ultimate Spider-Man. Glad to know I'm not the only fan on this site.

@Makiveli: I almost shed a tear reading through your first comment. I think some people see the Ultimate Universe as being an apology for the 616 universe and that's why they don't like it. I see the Ultimate Universe as a tribute to the 616 universe.

i can't believe im about to do this, but i have to agree with Makiveli. (hey, when someone's right, they're right) people hating on the Ultimate Universe is a little crazy. they complain that, "the characters don't act right, or their back stories are all screwed up."

well THATS the ENTIRE point of the Ultimate universe. to give the fans something different. something you see a LOT of people complain about on this site is when Cap kicks Banner in the face after they defeat the Hulk. people complain, "Cap would never do that." i want to ask those people, WHAT DO YOU THINK THE ENTIRE POINT IS???? what would be the point of coming out with the EXACT same thing over again?? The reason the Ultimate universe was created was to give the fans something new, and a LITTLE more realistic.

look at how the Avengers were formed. in 616, they all just happened to show up at the same time to fight the same threat, and then just decided to become a team. in Ultimate, they are formed by SHIELD. which makes more sense and is more realistic with our times?? of course the Ultimate story is.

here's another. in 616, Cap doesn't kill people, and he's the ultimate boy-scout. in Ultimate, he acts like you expect a hardened, grizzled WW2 vet to act. i'm sorry, but its ridiculous to even THINK that a soldier in WW2 (one of the most brutal wars in history) didn't kill people.

the bottom line is, both Universes do a LOT of cool things, and a LOT of bad things. Trying to combine the good things from both universes is the way to go. and ANYONE not willing to accept that the Avengers movie will be a combination of both will be thoroughly disappointed.

@makiveli, Im not hating on this universe. It's just not my cup of tea. I prefer the marvel heroes to be Heroic rather than realistic. I did enjoy Ultimates 1, and the reason why I read the new line of spider man was to see if it was good and I did enjoy it but the arcs are taking to long to conclude on one story line and they focus on another. In terms of what I prefer I just like to stick with what works.

@corndog, your statement about Captain America is very similar to the idea of the Authority comics, where superheroes actually kill people.

@makiveli, as I stated before, I know its another universe and we as fans don't really need to read them at all and they can focus on the 616 universe. Again, not hating on it, but I just don't find it as engaging as the main universe

@ blackairs

yeah, the authority is good stuff. but with Cap, its just that, he literally went from being in the middle of one of the bloodiest wars in history one day, and then waking up 50 years later another day. he's still gotta be stuck in that "kill, kill, kill" frame of mind, ya know? it just makes more sense that way. maybe not very heroic, but still a little more realistic, i think.

and keep in mind, i'm 616 all the way, but The hating of the Ultimate universe is a little nuts. (not by you in particular, but there is a lot of it that goes on around here.)

@corndog

I do agree that hating a universe for having no affect on the other is a tad nuts. No one tells you to read them anyway

Makiveli21 - 3/10/2010, 12:35 PM
blackairs- nah i wasnt saying that you in particular are a hater, but if you havent read the first 100 issues of ultimate spidey than your just not the ideal person to be criticizing the ultimate universe. let somebody who is a little more familiar with the material write the article.

corndog- dont you dare agree with me on anything douchey! how can we have internet beef if your always agreeing with everything i say?!? take it back and call me a retard! .................jus playin you actually made good points about cap and the ultimates, thanks for the assist

dont take what i said about the ultimate universe as "i dont love the 616 universe" cuz thats not the case. the 616 universe is like my wife who makes me breakfast every morning for 15 years and the ultimate universe is more like my young, latina, nymphomaniac mistress. i love them both in different ways. the 616 universe has been so crazy for the last few years with secret invasions, civil wars, dark reigns, and brand new days and while all thats been going on, its been nice to go check out the ultimate universe where peter parker is still having teenage high school problems or ultimate nick fury curses just like the real sam jackson! MOTHAFUCCA!

i LOVE ultimate wolverines origin, that he was the first mutant ever and that they tested the super soldier serum on him before captain america. i think i recall reading in ultimate origins that logan helped free a young magneto from his concentration camp in ww2 so 30 years later, magneto returns the favor and breaks logan out of his weapon x prison. and then they end up playing a serious role in eachothers deaths. what a crazy connection!

or how about ultimate hulk being the one who killed peter parkers parents????
