Universal Studios Extends Theme Park Closures From April 1st Until Later In The Month

There's more bad news for theme park fans today because Universal Studios is no longer going to open on April 1st again after being forced to close on March 12th! Will Disneyland and Disney World follow?

In news which most definitely should not come as a surprise, Universal Studios has pushed back its re-opening date in both Hollywood and Orlando from April 1st to April 19th.

The announcement about the closure of the theme parks came on March 12th, and the coronavirus pandemic has only worsened since then. Universal closed down the same day as Disneyland and Walt Disney World, so a similar announcement from Disney is quite likely imminent.

"We are extending the closure of Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood through April 19," reads the statement released today, "as we continue to respond to current conditions and make the health and safety of team members and guests our top priority."

Orlando has recently strengthened restrictions on public gatherings and social distancing, and the 2020 Olympics has already been pushed back t0 2021 due to COVID-19 concerns.

Part of Universal Studios' decision could be tied to the recent death of a 34-year-old man who visited both Universal Studios and Walt Disney World and then tested positive for coronavirus just a few days later. Being safe instead of sorry is the right move, however, and these closures could stretch well into 2020 depending what happens in April and May.

I hear the reason they're extending the closure is to work out the kinks in their new log flume ride based on Cats.

"Surprised" they didn't choose April 12, Easter.

I find that date to be extremely optimistic. America's cases haven't even peaked yet and going by other countries who's governments don't have a solid plan, it's going to get way nastier before it gets even remotely better. Virologist are already saying that America may already be too late to "flatten the curve" and could be at the mercy of waiting it out for the next 12 - 18 months until a vaccine is available.

Let's suck it it and stay inside and shut this thing down!

@bcom - we are currently the third largest hotspot in the world, and it seems it won't be long before we surpass Italy in terms of number of infections. Yeah, its likely too late to flatten too much.

As you said, stay inside and shut this virus down! Best to be smart and proactive... and safe and healthy, and alive.

@bcom - its just flat out not gonna be a year. We're already wrecking the economy because of this virus, destroying small and large businesses, laying off countless employees while preventing them from getting new work. And this for a virus with a 5% fatality rate. No way are they gonna keep the entire country locked down for a full year.

@Origame - Trouble is, if no preventative measures are taken then a massive chunk of the population will be hit all at once and that literally will bring the country to it's knees. That is why they are trying to get people to understand the "flatten the curve" thing. If you have waves of the virus instead of one massive peak then it becomes a lot more manageable. Just look at Italy, they thought they had it covered and weren't proactive enough. They waited for it to hit them so they could try to react to it and now they're having their population literally dropping like flies. If you ignore it then there is no normal life. You either fight it and try to beat it or you just submit to it and let it completely ravage you. I know which option I prefer.

@bcom - Just wondering what you would suggest then, and I don’t mean that in any type of facetious way, I just understand what the above poster is saying.
There’s no way we can do what we’re doing now for no more than another month, a year 18 months? That’s insanity and would bring the US back to the dark ages.

@CBMFilmJunkie - I’m no expert but I’m just reading a lot of reports from the W.H.O. And virologists who say the only real way to beat this virus at the moment is to cut its ability to jump form person to person. The countries that have been successful in having their cases decline are those that have practiced lock down protocols. Just letting it run rampant has far longer term ramifications than spending a shorter term locking down and “flattening the curve”. There’s no real win/win or easy solution beating this. A vaccine is a year away at minimum. You either try to flush it out quickly or ride a wave of reoccurring transmissions until a vaccine arrives. The longer term way will kill the economy a lot more than a shorter term lock down.

@bcom - you do realize this only has a 5% fatality rate right? Not to mention people developing antibodies. Im not saying the lockdown isnt the right call, but a year is simply unrealistic. You're going to get us into a massive recession worldwide that beats the great depression.

These dates are stupid. Yall know DAMN WELL that this wont be resolved enough to even realistically open 2 months from now.

You WILL BE STUCK IN YOUR HOUSE TILL MID SUMMER at the earliest IMO.

Prepare your minds for that.

There's a reason why they about to spend 2 Trillion on you all and it's not because they expect businesses to open in 3 weeks. Lol.
