When is a CBM's Poor Quality Acceptable?

When is a CBM's Poor Quality Acceptable?

Is it ever? Do we have a different set of standards depending on the film? Do we accept all bad movies equally?

I used to be a movie snob of epic proportions! My collection is littered with foreign films, Oscar winners, Golden Globe winners, Film Festival winners etc, you get the point.

Something changed my view on films. I'm not sure what it was but something changed. Five years ago I would have mocked G.I. Joe and the Transformers movies. Correction, I would not have even acknowledged them because they probably would not have hit my film radar. I've loved comic books my whole life but it's not until recently that my love of film and comics met.

I still love all those movies I used to but now I find there's room for the G.I. Joes and transformers of the world. Popcorn flicks, nothing more. Wonderful, mindless entertainment not meant to make a statement or an in-depth character study or enlighten anyone.

Perhaps they're just a series of images that assist in telling a high level, basic story, a series of images that are fun to watch. Not every movie has to be Citizen Kane.

I think there's room for all different types of movies with varying degrees of the subjective "quality".

If we take these movies for what they're worth and enjoy them for what they are we might actually enjoy them a bit.

Don't get me wrong I prefer "higher quality" more thoughtful filmaking but I think there's room for just blowing shit up to. The backdrop to bad ass aliens or giant robots or terrorist organization hell bent on world domination or destruction.

No matter how bad a movie may be, you know somebody loved it at some point.

No excuse. I don't care what they are based on, they sucked. Axl I get what your saying I really do. Not everything has to be Citizen Kane, but there is also a flip side to that coin. Do they have to be SOOOO bad? So juvenile? So cringworthy? So SHIT? Of course not. Hacks like Bay and Sommers play on the "leave your brain at the door" popcorn mentality because they are incapable of anything else. Is a popcorn movie an excuse for bad acting? bad script? Complete and utter stupidity like having ice sink and dogs humping each other..twice? I dont think so. Im all for popcorn..just don't take the piss!

interesting article. I love a movie that is enjoyable by any means...if im entertained then im good. A movie doesnt have to be good to be BAD-ASS.

hah, cheers, well, it is accurate!

Axl, sure, very few movies are without ANY redeeming features. I too enjoyed the effects in ROTF, I had fun with the robot fights. Since the effects in GI Joe were the worst iv ever seen in my life I couldn't enjoy that, but I had...ummm, Sienna Miller's rack!

Axl @ Congrats dude, main buddy!!!

Yeah, i only class CBM movies if they actually are originally comic books, not based on toy lines etc or come after a tv show or movie!

Kudos though dude, interesting article!!

I enjoyed Transformer: The Return of the Fallen, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, and believe me I didn't understand how they were in D.C. at one moment, then all of a sudden in a desert. Or the robot Heaven, what the hell? But it entertained me.

G.I. Joe however was complete an utter disaster, horrible effects, mediocre fight scenes, terrible dialogue, no thought in an of the "jokes" I guess you'd call them. If you pick it apart or take as a whole nothing good came out of this god forsaken movie.

Punisher: Warzone could have been great, it was not and I could not stand the portrayal of Jigsaw, that horrible Brooklyn accent just took me out of the whole experience.

Woliverine: Origins, what I said about G.I. Joe goes double for this piece of shit.

Good article Axl, there is indeed a fine line between popcorn fun and just absolute horribleness.

I believe that there are different levels of "GOOD"
like:
AWESOME
SWEET
COOL
GOOD
OKAY
MEH
and
BLEH
where AWESOME is well, AWESOME(!), and BLEH is just plain old crappy.
ROTF was GOOD and GI JOE was MEH.
those are MY scores.
fact of the matter is:
i still own both of their DVDs.

If every attempt is made to be true to something, I can give campiness a pass, but in the case of GI Joe they didn't even try. No excusses in a case like that. I shot the copy I was given, so that should tell you my opinion of that piece of shit.

you cant just accpet bad movie because things get blown up. G.I. Joe and the Transformers had budget of over $100+ million the director and studios should at least make a quality movie. it seems that lower budget movies at much more better in quality.

@LEEE777

yeah it true they are toy movies but this is the same thing when film studios bosses said about comic book movies. they should spend sometime to make a quality movie at least.

I dunno, there's just some movies I automatically deem as Popcorn flicks, on their subject matter like Tranformers it's a movie about giant fighting robots so even if you ground it in reality as much as you can it's still going to be unrealistic, or G.I joe, If they wanted a "real-life" military movie, then it wouldn't be GI Joe it would be Saving Private Ryan.. So you can just assume they are popcon flicks and go with no brain.
Whereas X-men or iron man can be very grounded in reality and be taken seroisly cause they deal with real elements. Like for the most part Iron man deals with hightened equipment we have today..

Check out my book: MutaGenesis: The Black Magician

Sorry had to do a plug for it, cause i figure People on CBM would be the people who would enjoy it the most

i finally saw gi joe and it snorted suckiness up the butthole. i agree with u though axl...sometimes not all movies have to be deep or analytical or just done well, someitmes stupid, vapid popcorn flicks are fun! i thought 2012 was stupid as hell but it was also a thrillride!!
but despite the 'popcorn' factor, gi joe just couldnt hold my interest...

I guess for me it comes down to living up to what you expect. If a movie gives me what it says on the tin, for better or worse, I will respect thats what it is. But the likes of ROTF and GI Joke did not do that. If I go and see Transformers, I want to see a big action packed thrill ride about giant robots. I do not want to see retarded parents, dogs humping, annoying room mates crying, John Turturro's ass crack and big swinging Devastator balls. Its not supposed to be a comedy. Its certainly not supposed to be an unfunny comedy! If I want that shit I go to see stuff like American Pie..not Transformers. So be as dumb and silly and "popcorn" as you like, just deliver what the damn title of your movie is supposed to be about.

In the case of Borigins, for the most part, it did deliver. Granted, in a very mixed up and twisted way by raping the source material, but as a movie, it was action packed, well acted(mostly) and exiting, so I would put that on a whole different level to ROTF and Joke

Well Talond, any excuse brother! haha

@Ror I have to agree about Origins. If I had no background with the source I would have thought it was much better. GI Joe was painful to watch. ROTF not as bad but still not good.

I am all for mindless entertainment but what has come out this past year is some of the worst in recent years. GI Joe, TF2, Wolverine, and Punisher Warzone (and mabey Terminator IV, just started watching that one right now). Why don't the studios talk with the comic book community on what our expectations are. Sure some of our expectations will not transfer to the greater public but there has to be some happy medium. Perhaps we can put a comic book 'tea party' together and go protest Fox studios and demand our voices be heard.

Does Twilight,New Moon,or Terminator Salavation count as CBM's? If so both of the Twilight's sucked New Moon had it's moments but they were few and far apart and Terminator Salvation was a total let down to me. It was slow and had hardly any real action scenes it just didnt do it for me.

Once again New Moon was a love story kinda falling in line with the Romeo AND Juliet theme. Seems like there's going to be a part 3 but I pass I'll wait for a real Vampire movie to be made. Im sure someone liked maybe even loved these movies. I'd put them in there with origins, transformers, and G.I.Joe.

There is absolutely no excuse for GI Joke.

None whatsoever. The pathetic/horrible/awful performances, the Sy-Fy original movie special effects, juvenile humor, sheer stupidity, etc. are inexcusable.

It annoys the crap out of me when people say "GI Joe was based on a toy line, what did you expect?!" Because it ACTUALLY was based on a full-fledged cartoon, and a comic series.

It also particularly grinds my gears when they compliment GI Puke, yet turn around and sh*t on Origins. At least Origins had good performances and wasn't AS stupid as GI Joke.

And um, Pirates of the Caribbean was based on a theme park ride for God's sake.

If I want to see cheesy goodness I go to SyFy like InTylerWeTrust referenced. If I want a good time that I am going to pay money to, I want a halfway decent story with my epic effects. I have not seen GI Joke yet and probably won't until it ends up on HBO or Fox someday

i dont think its how true a filmmaker stays to the source, i've always judged cbms by the quality of the movie itself. i was watching the first xmen the other day and wondering when any of that shit happened. but in order to tell the story and make it more modern and appealing they took liberties and i was cool with that, because it was a decent film. don't insult me though by saying its a popcorn flick, i agree with what you're saying but you're kinda giving studios a greenlight to make the tagline for movies, "[frick] you, there's giant robots in it (costumed heroes, etc. etc.)" to quote another poster, "it's not such a serious thing to be taken seriously" still doesn't mean we have to just take it
