Disney's PLANET OF THE APES Reboot Won't Be A "Part 4" But Could Begin Production Soon

Matt Reeves brought the Planet of the Apes trilogy to an end in 2017, and Disney is now working on a reboot. In a new interview, director Wes Ball has provided an update on where things stand with that...

Now that Disney has acquired Fox, the studio has a long list of new franchises at their disposal. That includes Planet of the Apes, and as that's such a marketable property, it's no great surprise that a reboot is in the works (this time from The Maze Runner director Wes Ball).

Ball's adaptation of that YA novel was a hit, and helped establish him as a filmmaker to watch.

During an interview with Discussing Film, he was asked where things stand with the reboot, and after explaining that he's been regularly meeting with writer Josh Friedman via Zoom, Ball said that the script is "continuing to move forward." Explaining that there's a team working on concept art, he believes they "could actually be in virtual production relatively soon because it’s largely a CG movie."

As beloved as Rupert Wyatt and Matt Reeves' Planet of the Apes movies were, Ball cautioned that he's not necessarily looking to find a way of continuing that series after such a definitive ending.

"Those last three movies are one of the great trilogies we have in modern movie history. They are just so well done. They honored the original movies they sprang from, the Charlton Heston movies, but they grounded it in a modern sensibility and it just worked. Caesar is one of the great movie characters that we’ll have throughout time. So what do you do to follow that up, right? At the same time, I wasn’t interested in doing a part four either. We want to also do our own thing."

"We have a take," Ball continued. "We have a way of staying in the universe that was created before us, but we’re also opening ourselves up in being able to do some really cool new stuff. Again, I’m trying to be careful here. I’ll say this, for fans of the original three don’t worry – you’re in good hands. The original writers and producers that came up with Rise and Dawn, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, they’re also on board with this."

Reading between the lines, it's likely Ball's film will take place in the distant future, finally taking us to a true "Planet of the Apes," rather than the final few years of humanity in the present day.

It bothers me how much they're using the word "original", but not referring at all to the actual original franchise.

@Spock0Clock - Huh?

@FearTheLiving - "I’ll say this, for fans of the original three don’t worry – you’re in good hands."

I worded my comment [frick]erdly, but I meant how they used "original" to refer to new movies as much as the old ones.

@Spock0Clock - Ah gotcha. Yeah I can see that.

@Spock0Clock - Who cares about the old original tho? it was a basic sci-fi flick that was only made special by the twist it had at the end.

@JustALurker - Seriously? The original subtext of the novel, covered by the first Charlton Heston film, was a brilliant study of racism and societal structure. The twist was just the icing on top. After that, the remaining four film went their own way - plot-wise - but still contained the undercurrent set up by the novel, and reined-in by lack of budget.

The Andy Serkis trilogy is perfection!

Why? You can't make anything better than what the last three movies did... Might as well have made a fourth and final one.

Why can't they just let it stay a great trilogy? Maybe Simpsons wasn't that far off about the Planet of the Apes musical

@tmp3
They can't, they seem em as IPs and therefore they have to milk it.

@tmp3 I would actually pay to see this.

@Doomsday8888 - Guess that's a pretty apt thing to say considering my post had a reference to The Simpsons too :|

So will it be a full reboot then or is it set in any of the previous Planet of Apes universes?

@MalseMarcel - Well a previous interview with the director did hint it'll still be set in the universe of the previous films.

I can 100% see why people would want WB to not mess up a good thing here a la Star Wars Sequel trilogy. But so long as Caesar stays dead and they move forward in history, I see no problem with doing a Planet of the Apes 4 in the same universe but with different characters. I think honoring that original trilogy would certainly lend itself well to this franchise rather than restarting it for the sake of restarting it.

But, who cares, right?

I would watch something like 30 years later in that same Apesverse. But please leave that Reeves' trilogy alone. It will go down as one the greatest trilogies in movie history.

@sKeemAn - Exactly what I was thinking, in the first film there was an astronaut team that left earth during the whole pandemic, it wasn't brought up again, that would be a neat thing to do.

Why are they rebooting a series that is still strong. Build off the Caesar trilogy. It was fantastic. Set it 100 years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes or something.
