JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM Claws Its Way To Monstrous $150 Million Opening; Tops $700M Worldwide

Universal Pictures' and Amblin Entertainment's Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has completely shattered initial expectations on its way to winning the weekend with an absolutely monstrous $150 million debut.

Internationally, the J.A. Bayona-directed film continued its dominating run with another $106.7 million, including another #1 finish in China with $32.4 million, topping Disney/Pixar's Incredibles 2, which opened to $21.2 million in
Middle Kingdom. Overall, Fallen Kingdom has earned $561.5 million from 51 foreign markets (including $202.6 million from China) and its current worldwide haul stands at an impressive $711.5 million. It's now very much on course to top $1 billion by the end of its theatrical run, if not sooner.

While the critical reception has been decidedly mixed, the audience reaction since Thursday has been considerably better, as evidenced by the recently revealed A- CinemaScore. This is certainly good news for the blockbuster as it looks to command the box office until the release of Marvel's Ant-Man and the Wasp on July 6.

Jurassic World:
Fallen Kingdom is now the third-highest grossing film of the year, behind only Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War and Marvel's Black Panther, and, with a $150 million opening, has secured the fourth-largest launch of 2018. Fallen Kingdom's opening is also the second-best in the history of Universal Pictures, behind only the original Jurassic World ($208.8M).

Meanwhile, Disney/Pixar's Incredibles 2 was also a major winner, finishing second with approximately $80 million, which brings its domestic total to an incredible $350.3 million. The Brad Bird-directed animated feature also earned another $56.8 million internationally and its current worldwide total stands at about $485 million.

Ocean's 8 and Tag finished third and fourth, respectively, with $11.65 million and $8.2 million. Ocean's 8 has now topped $100 million domestic and its worldwide total stands at $170.9 million ($100.3M domestic; $70.6M foreign), which is solid haul on a reported $70 million production budget. Tag continues to struggle with approximately $31.8 million worldwide ($30.3M domestic; $1.5M foreign) on a $28 million production budget, but there is a slight silver lining as it has yet to open in several major markets, including the U.K. Italy, and Germany.

20th Century Fox's Deadpool 2 finished fifth with $5.3 million and has now topped $300 million domestic and $400 million overseas. Its worldwide total now stands at a whopping $707.2 million ($304M domestic; $403M foreign). While it's unlikely to top the final total of the original, analysts are currently projecting a strong $740 million finish when all is said and done.

Disney/Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story dropped to sixth with $4 million, bringing its disappointing worldwide cume to $353 million worldwide ($202.1M domestic; $151.3M foreign). Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War dipped to ninth with $2.5 million, bringing its total worldwide haul to $2.03 billion ($669.4M domestic; $1.361M foreign).

I am surprised it is doing this well with its mediocre RT average!

@Forthas - Well, while it doesn't offer anything groundbreaking, it's a fun and intense film. And it's also fast-paced. Which makes it highly rewatchable.

@kylo0607 - I am going to catch it tomorrow...but even the audience RT score is a bit shaky. So we will see...

@Forthas - The internet hates the Jurassic franchise (outside of the first) for whatever reason
Forthas

@MiopTop - I don't know if I would use the word "hate" I think that they want to see the franchise evolve creatively and that is the problem. I don't think it can. If they plan to do a movie every other year for the next ten years it could sink the franchise. I think this one of those franchises that should do a Trilogy then take a long break or it will get tired quickly.

@Forthas - ha! You’re so silly. You still think RT critics an impact on films anymore? The audience score can sometimes be an indicator of word of mouth, but the critics themselves are becoming more meaningless every day. JWFK was very entertaining and the box office is deserved.

@kylo0607 - Where JW was similar to JP, this was similar TLW. Only way more enjoyable. I might agree with it also being my favourite too since the original

Guess this franchise still has something other sequels (except marvel's) has not. I bet it has something to do with Dinosaurs, Chris Pratt and Jeff Goldblum

Real talk: I loved it. It was the movie they should've made instead of the first Jurassic World. It was a thematic forward development while also keeping the feeling of a Jurassic Park film. 9/10 for me.

@ShellHead - Now that you mention it, I actually completely agree

@ShellHead -

In several ways this film retread ground from The Lost World in the same manner Jurrasic World did
Jurassic Park.

1. A young, ambitious, corporate guy with no scruples, betrays the trust of an elderly founder of the
Jurassic Park by seizing control of the company with an eye solely on the profit margins and not
on scientific discovery.

2. Sends Mercs to gather dinosaurs and genetic material by any means necessary

3.Supports a wildly reckless plan to import Dinosaurs to the US mainland where they are supposed to
be held at a secure facility.

4.Dinos escape with predictable results.

I'm not gonna lie I did not enjoy this film. And that twist they through in at the end that had no build up had me rolling my eyes. If you like the movie more power to you but it was not for me.
