THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS Director Explains Why She Decided To Bring Neo & Trinity Back From The Dead

The first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections was released last week, giving us our first look at returning leads Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) in action.

Both characters were actually killed-off in the final part of the original trilogy, The Matrix Revolutions, and while we still don't know how they'll be brought back, director Lana Wachowski has now revealed why she decided to resurrect the franchise's heroes.

While speaking at a screenwriting panel for the International Literature Festival Berlin (via /Film), Wachowski explained that great personal loss was the impetus for her bringing Neo and Trinity back to the land of the living.

"My dad died, then this friend died, then my mom died. I didn't really know how to process that kind of grief. I hadn't experienced it that closely ... You know their lives are going to end and yet it was still really hard. My brain has always reached into my imagination and one night, I was crying and I couldn't sleep, and my brain exploded this whole story. And I couldn't have my mom and dad, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life."

"It was immediately comforting to have these two characters alive again," she continued. "And it's super simple. You can look at it and say: 'ok, these two people die and ok, bring these two people back to life and oh, doesn't that feel good.' Yeah, it did! It's simple, and this is what art does and that's what stories do, they comfort us."

It sounds like making this fourth Matrix film was cathartic for Lana, who clearly went through a lot prior to production.

The trailer suggested that Neo, aka Thomas, may have been plugged back in to The Matrix, while a brief shot of Trinity seemed to hint that she may actually be a computer programme, and not a resurrected version of the character we knew. Have another look at the footage below, and be sure to share your theories in the usual place.

@Waddles - Yeah, I honestly loved that response. Simple and real.

@Waddles @Menks123 - If those characters are as important as her paremts, wouldn't she want to "let them go" or let them RIP?

Trailer looks cool but my expectations are low for this 4th one because the previous 2 were terribly confusing and full of random ideas that don't go anywhere. Also only 1 of them came back....

If the leaks are accurate (which I think the trailer confirmed), then they will need to be very careful how they pull this off.

It can be very good, but has potential to piss a lot of people off also.

Yikes...that doesn't give me hope at all. Really worried this movie will suck worse than Reloaded and Revolutions.

I will say at least with neo it's very reasonable he survived. Not to mention oracle said she believed neo would come back. Trinity's harder to justify, but she could've been alive long enough to be saved by the machines.

As for the exanation, I gotta call bs. We all know this movie wouldn't have been made without them. And after Jupiter ascending, giving wb a Keanu reeves helmet action movie was probably the only way they were gonna get a budget this big.

@Origame - Who knows what the machines are capable of? In the animatrix they we're experimenting with human brains. It's how they built the matrix.

Maybe they know how to actually resurrect dead humans? Though I imagine it to be more akin to cloning. Exact memories placed within exact bodies.

We all know why Warner Bros got into this :D

I hope they have a good opening,

aswell it's probably going to do worse numbers that The suicide Squad.

Has to compete with Spiderman, HBOMax and HD pirate copies and opening on Christmas week.

I'd enjoy it more if was Rated R, but will understand if they made it a pg13 to get more of an audience.

All that said, I feel for Lana's reasoning. but yeah she wouldn't have done it without some conditions

@Jaykay21 - I'm still gonna watch it at the cinema (if the UK doesn't lockdown for winter Covid-wave), because If there's one thing I expect of the Wachowskis it's spectacle. Hopefully some mind bending philosophies & drama?

@nmasterofnaught - oh for sure, this for me is a must watch in cinema after Dune, but even if there isn't a lockdown, I still think the confidence for movie goers will be lesser than it is today due to covid and flu peaking again in December.
None the less I expect it to really entertain. fingers crossed it does well, but there is a heap stacked against it.

@Jaykay21 - Agreed. Spider-Man NWH may also put a serious dent in it as well. Wonder if NWH will do well against possible winter wave?

We shall wait & see.
