The first trailer for The Matrix Resurrections is now online!
The footage begins with Keanu Reeves' Neo - now going by the name Thomas - meeting with his psychiatrist (Neil Patrick Harris) to discuss some vivid dreams he's been having. Thomas has no memory of The Matrix or his former life, and is convinced he must be going crazy.
From there, we see a reunion between Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss' Trinity (though they don't recognize each other at first), and plenty of visually stunning action as our heroes encounter who we presume to be a younger incarnation of Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), and a mysterious warrior (Jessica Henwick) who appears to know exactly who Neo really is.
While this is certainly an effective teaser, it does suggest that this movie will be more a reboot than a direct sequel to the original trilogy, and we still have no idea how Neo and Trinity are alive again after the events of Revolutions. Of course, with a title like Resurrections, there's a good chance it will be addressed!
Other franchise returnees include Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, Lambert Wilson as The Merovingian, and Daniel Bernhardt as Agent Johnson. Also joining the cast will be Andrew Caldwell, Priyanka Chopra, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen Hollman, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Christina Ricci, Max Riemelt, and Brian J. Smith.
The Matrix Resurrections is directed by Lana Wachowski, and will be released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously on December 22.
