20th Century Fox Brings THE MARTIAN Forward To October

The first trailer for Ridley Scott's upcoming sci-fi movie The Martian met with very positive reception this week, and the good news continues: Fox has shifted the release date of the Matt Damon-starring film, moving it away from Thanksgiving week to October.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Ridley Scott's The Martian has shifted release dates, moving from November 25th to October 2nd. The site reports that the sci-fi film has shied away from a "crowded" Thanksgiving period (which includes The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 and Pixar's The Good Dinosaur) to a position as "the first all audience event film of the fall." Fox's Victor Frankenstein (which stars James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe) has taken the release date vacated by The Martian, meaning we'll get to see Scott's latest film earlier than expected. This seems like a confidence booster for the film, despite the director's track record of late, but what do you think?

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meagre supplies, Watney must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

I'm excited for this movie, It looks like Interstellar but better. I'm the most worried about the director Mr. Scott he has not made a good movie in a LONG time. Hope he pulls through tho.

Ridley is a cinematic genius, like Nolan. The only thing that falls short sometimes is the writing and that's not entirely his fault.

Awesome news. Like everyone else, I really hope this will be a return to form for Scott. With a cast this good, a premise as exciting as this, and source material as inspired as this book (from what I've heard, at least), it'd be a damn shame for the writing or the directing to let it down.

CONSPIRACY THEORY TIME PEOPLE!!!

So...

What if the crew successfully returns to Mars, and manages to rescue Astronaut Matt Damon, despite losing communication with Earth, and experiencing a bunch of problems and whatnot...

...But somehow, despite all the overwhelming odds, and some unusual malfunctions, the ship manages to limp back to Earth safely...

...The crew FINALLY returns home and lands, only to discover...

BOOM!!

(But seriously tho, I do realize the ships have different names, and this is apparently based on a book...but still...just imagine if that happened!! Mind = BLOWN.)

This shift in release date has tempered my expectations drastically. Why would a studio move a holiday tentpole film with guaranteed movie going traffic, to a time in early October where the movie doesn't have as much of a chance to do as big at the box office. Granted its not as worse as the studio moving Jupiter ascending from summer tentpole to hiding it in February (a notorious time for studios to unload their stinkers), but you don't move your movie from a prime holiday spot to early October if you have faith in it.
