Filmmaker Neill Blomkamp Says He Has Unfortunately Moved On From Possibly Directing An ALIEN Movie

At one point, it looked like District 9 director Neill Blomkamp was going to helm his very own Aliens sequel, giving Ripley a proper send off. Unfortunately, it seems that the time has now passed him by.

Over the last few years, talk of District 9 director Neill Blomkamp possibly helming a new Alien sequel has understandably gotten fans excited.

With the Aliens film franchise seemingly stuck in a rut under the direction of Ridley Scott, who seems keen on telling a convoluted prequel story, Blomkamp sparked interest in the franchise with talk of directing a sequel to Aliens (ignoring Alien 3). This talk was accompanied by concept art that shared updated looks of Ripley, Hicks, and the rest of the crew that survived.

It all looked very promising. Unfortunately, it amounted to nothing but hopes and dreams thanks to Ridley Scott continuing his Prometheus prequel storyline. It now looks like we may never get an Aliens sequel from Blomkamp. Speaking to JoBlow, Blomkamp provided an update on his Alien project, acknowledging that he has moved on from the idea.

“Yeah, I mean, I wish I could share more, but obviously Fox owns it. It's just an unfortunate thing. I speak to Sigourney about it sometimes. At this point it's kinda like the fire that was burning within me to make that is gone. Stepping outside of even the legal kind of studio-based politics I just feel like its time has come and gone. So, yeah...I think no. And I say that really reluctantly, because I cannot state how much of a fan of Sigourney I am and how much of a fan I am of ALIEN and ALIENS and the idea of doing a sequel to James Cameron's film is amazing on all levels. But, there's a point at which when you're years into it you have to move on. So, I think that has happened to me.”

It’s an unfortunate situation as I’m sure many fans would prefer a proper send off for Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley over another Prometheus movie, especially with Ridley Scott reportedly considering shifting the Aliens storyline from Xenomorphs to AI.

Would you rather see a Neill Blomkamp-directed Aliens movie, or are you looking forward to Ridley Scott’s next take on the franchise?

I would say let's move on from Alien movies altogether.... Terminator ones too. And Jurassic Park movies.

And while we're ending things that have gone on way too long - if somebody could end The View. I'd also really appreciate that as well.

@Kman - And Predator. And Star Wars. And Avatar. And Transformers. I could go on.

They should just take all of the actors and actresses they planned to use and just use that story but change up the names, create a new alien, and there you go. Sell the backstory as a "dream" about some craziness in space.

Scott did a power play with 20th century fox. My ideas..My movies and no one else works on them. Prometheus and Covenant were boring.

Im really sad that blomkamp will not be able to do his idea. It sounded like it did belong in this universe.

Can someone interview Neill Blomkamp and address the little elephant in the room: would Blomkamp like to write and work with Ridley Scott?

Make Alien Great Again ? LOL!

I wish Ridley Scott would go away and quit giving us what he wants instead of what we want

District 9 & Elysium were good, but Chappie was definitely not. You kinda get the sense Blomkamp is a one trick pony tho.

Its unfortunate because I really liked the concept he had, and Blomkamp can be a great director. District 9 is excellent, Elysium was good. Hope we get a District 10 movie at some point...

@HeavyMetal4Life - I'm with you there. I wanted to like Chappie, but I felt like Die Antwoord hijacked the movie. I never even heard of them until that movie.

@Kryptonmatters - yeah, totally agree about Die Antwoord. I've honestly never seen the whole film. What I did see, I largely did not like.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Yolanda wasn't terrible, but I think that's because she's not an egomaniac like Ninja is in real life. I found his character so unlikable in the movie I wanted him to die horribly. I was rooting for Hugh Jackman to kill him violently. And of course it didn't happen, and I was pissed. Turns out Ninja is a douchebag in real bag.

@Kryptonmatters - I did like Hugh's character, usually don't seem him play an antagonist

@HeavyMetal4Life - The Prestige. But yeah it's hard to root for the ones who are supposed to be the heroes when one of your stars is Hugh Jackman

@Kryptonmatters - Oh yeah that's right, wow that slipped my mind. Such a great film and role for him. But at times I was kind of siding with Hugh in the Prestige, but mostly I was rooting for Bale.

@HeavyMetal4Life - But you get my point on why I hated Die Antwoord in Chappie. Mostly Ninja. I really wanted to like it. I like Elysium. I loved District 9, but it felt like Blombkamp needed the budget, and went to his friends Die Antwoord for the money.

@Kryptonmatters - you're probably right. It just got out of hand. Has he done a film since Chappie? For several years he was one of the hottest sci-fi directors out there, after District 9 and Elysium. Would love to see more from him.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Check his Youtube channel Studio OATS. It's fantastic. He directed all the shorts. My personal favorite is Zygote as it's to me the closest we'll ever get to his vision of an Alien sequel.

@Kryptonmatters - alright thanks, I'll check it out later! Hopefully he gets back into the bigger budget studio films.
