Im annoyed that District 9 didn't get more recognition..and to be honest, if there was any justice Watchmen would be up there in strong contention too, but there are some great movies there. Personally I would like to see The Hurt Locker win something, as well as Coraline andInglorious Basterds , and of course, Avatar! I'v given this movie some stick, and have yet to see it, but winning a prestigious award can only be a good thing for Sci-Fi themed movies in the future.

Avatar hasn't come out on general release but all of the stuffy old bastards that decide the noms have seen it.

Sirprize, I agree competely and well said.

But I will actually go one further and say that the Academy Awards, like the Nobel prize no longer have any meaning, except that they satisfy the political interests of the individuals making the decisions about who and why such awards should be given.

I don't generally follow the Globes but I have no doubt it's the same story.

Hollywood loves to award itself for how pretty they can be. We need more award shows, we're far too pretty! And important! We're really good at playing make believe and we should award ourselves thusly! We love we!

@Darth I agree with what your saying BUT. A LOT of those movies deserve to be there. Meryl Streep always does fantastic BUT she was fantastic in Julie/Julia she should have won in my opinion for doubt LAST YEAR she was AMAZING. she is amazing...I'd do Meryl Streep because of her talent alone yea i said it...I WOULD DO Meryl streep and cuddle afterwards. As for Tobey Mcguire yea deffinately he surprised the HELL out of me He isnt going to be MTV best kiss winner anymore. I agree with you on District 9 the movie was just done amazingly and deals on very strong issue's AVATAR hasnt even come out yet and half of the public is kind of convinced its going to be Ferngully the last Rain Forest. But I will wait till i actually see that to judge. I have faith in it becuase I really love James Cameron and the decisions he makes and how he does his movies. Inglorious Basterds.....come on ...its Quentin Tarantino I dont care what anyone says he is a great director very abstract compared to the crap ppl get away with in hollywood and he is a closer a good god damn closer when it comes to making me love his movies. I fell in love with Basterds after the first 20 min scene it was tense about involved I loved it. "only closers get coffee....sit down and shut up" Anyone know what movie thats from heh heh

@ Set: Yeah I know. But that's the tricky part.

SOMETIMES their picks are entirely legitimate and not based on politics at all. It's impossible to tell which is which unless you watch every single nom and every winner..

The worst one in recent memory was Tommy Lee Jones nomination for best actor in Valley of Ellah.. poop and piffle

@Set2Fallfirst-Nice Glengarry Glen Ross reference. Amazing film

@Leee-I think people are just backlashing out at the fact we are being force fed that this is the greatest movie we haven't seen yet. If it is that, the movie will prove it on its own merit. Until then, I've already seen Pocahontas & Fern Gully and don't need them put together in one film moved to outer space.

@DARTH yea i get you but the thing is, you cant say that unless you've seen each movie. I've seen most of those and they're great I mean pretty much they all deserve to be there in my opinion. AVATAR no one has seen but critics and I like Roger Ebert he says its amazing my friend saw that 15 min preview in 3d he said it was amazing and he was skeptical too. everyone back off AVATAR until you've seen it i have a feeling everyone will like it. Even ROR lol but Im gonna be interested to read his review non the less.

The point is that everyone has a chance at liking the film. Not being BLOWN AWAY to smitherines by it though. This film is over-hyped. It will be nothing more than good. It's not the [frick]ing holy grail of movies and i don't need to see it to realise it. The "over-hype" is what we HATE, not the movie itself.
Set2Fallfirst
Set2Fallfirst - 12/15/2009, 11:12 AM
@shaman Touche' It is over hyped but maybe the over hype is because of the 3D? at least I want to think. Its kinda like the epectations before I went to see spiderman 3 How badly I heard it sucked. Hoping it wouldnt suck....but alas it sucked. So i want to see AVATAR hoping its going to blow me like this girl I knew in highschool. But I have a feeling....its going to be so built up that when I see it Ill shy a shrug and zip my pants.

umm I don't think the tech has advanced quite that far yet, Set2fall. so umm yeah maybe not
Spock
Spock - 12/15/2009, 11:22 AM
I remember when Jurassic Park came out in 93, I was 14 @ that time. I remeber watching MTV or reading the newspaper how people were bitching about The new CGI tech done on the TRex. I thought that was over blown & exciting to see some new tech. I believe Avatar is up here because the new tech as well. Hopefully the story is good. Well see it friday after work! Precious was a good but disturbing movie.
Shaman
Shaman - 12/15/2009, 11:35 AM
Set- Well at least we're here(the "haters") to make sure you don't expect getting blown like the girl you knew in highschool, but to just enjoy a "good" movie ;)

Spock- I never liked any of the Jurassic Park films. The concept of a park of Dinosaurs in a supposedly "controled" environment seemed idiotic to me. So naturally, no matter how cool the FX were, it fell apart for me from very early on. They were "decent" films but not enough to pay to see them in theaters and not enough to buy a full priced DVD of them. That's kinda how i feel about Avatar actually. To each's own. I just don't buy over-hype when it's tied to an overused plot. The effects shouldn't be concidered even half of the picture's worth IMO.
Spock

@Shaman, Good point I just hope the story line is good, despite the relative comparetive pics & story arcs I've seen on here & other places!
Set2Fallfirst
Set2Fallfirst - 12/15/2009, 11:40 AM
@ shaman lol truer words. At least you have a valid argument though everyone else has a vapid sense of why this movie sucks. I was talking to one person who said its gonna suck because he thinks aliens was overrated.

@spock Precious was fantastic that was some great acting...very disturbing
Shaman
Shaman - 12/15/2009, 11:50 AM
Spock- For the millions of people paying for this film, i hope that too, buddy ;)

Set2Fallfirst- Yeah, unfortunitely like Hinkley said, there seems to be a fashion trend of thrashing films before they've been released. That IMO, sucks as much as over-hype. Too much of something is bound to be bad.

I'm looking forward to it. It may not an original type of story. But hell, this story has been told in Ferngully, Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves and The Last Samurai. Those were all great movies!

If this is simply a sci-fi retelling of that story, then I'm sold. :)

Update on TheMYTH from his friend Chris AKA Humbled:

“Apparently they have found a slow working balance between the 2 and now all 3 major tumors are about 20% smaller than they were when he came in…. On top of that, he was able to have a few hours of real consciousness yesterday morning. He spent it with his new son who he'd not met until then. I sat in the corner of the room the whole time just watching the most resilient person to ever face their own mortality. Even though any who could see him could tell he was in considerable pain, his humor and wit were still intact. Doctors say if no more complications come along, he might be able to be home about Christmas time and continue his treatment through outpatient. Apparently this type of cancer is typically treated this way…. When this first started a little over a month ago he had less than 2% survival chance, now it's a 1-in-4. I'm sure Myth would have something to say about the power of the collective consciousness of humanity after reading this article and being able to see just how many people are rooting for him.”

He includes a poem from theMyth’s own writings.

He also mentions The Myth’s stories and fan fics and Myth’s family:

” I told Amanda (MYTH’s wife) about this article and she viewed it. She said she was at a loss for words and couldn't see to type a comment. She said that this was something phenomenal and it would leave even 'Myth' at a loss for words. I'm sure she'll be back soon to give thanks. “

Keep posting guys for MYTH and his family, they need all the strength and encouragement and well wishes and love they can get now. The MYTH is still alive and fighting, so cheer the man on!

But when did public popularity ever have an effect on awards contenders? The nominees are decided by peopel within the industry. As much as they can be stuffy [frick]ers about it at times, its actually for the best,,if it came down to public choice we would have [frick]ing Transformers 2 up for best picture.

I don't mind the overhyped "Avatar" receiving some Golden Globe nominations, but...Best Drama? Are they [frick]ing nuts?
It's an unoriginal Sci-Fi Action Flick...the only thing innovative about it Might be the special effects techniques that were applied.

Why the hell doesn't DISTRICT 9 have more nominations?!

@Sirprize- Probably most of the people who won the Nobel Peace Prize won it because they gave hope to the world and inspired change...none of them actually accomplished Peace. Peace is an almost unattainable goal, all one can do strive towards it and inspire others to do the same. President Barack Hussein Obama definitely fits that criteria and therefore deserved the Nobel Peace Prize, with that said...you need to stop hating.
