AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Director James Cameron Reveals Why The Movie Has A 3 Hour, 10 Minutes Runtime

Filmmaker James Cameron doesn't do things by halves, and Avatar: The Way of Water will be no exception. Clocking in at a whopping 3 hours and 10 minutes, the sequel will be one of the longest big-budget movies in recent memory, and the director has now shared his thoughts on why the Avatar sequel needs to be so bum-numbingly long.

"The goal is to tell an extremely compelling story on an emotional basis," Cameron told Total Film (via SFFGazette.com) during a recent interview. "I would say the emphasis in the new film is more on character, more on story, more on relationships, more on emotion."

"We didn’t spend as much time on relationship and emotion in the first film as we do in the second film, and it’s a longer film, because there’s more characters to service. There’s more story to service."

We've been hearing for a while that Avatar: The Way of Water is a family story, but the filmmaker was quick to assure fans his sci-fi franchise hasn't been Disney-fied. "People say, 'Oh my God, a family story from Disney? Just what we want...' This isn’t that kind of family story. This is a family story like how The Sopranos is a family story."

Of course, there's going to be a fair bit of action to go along with that, and some newly released stills offer a first look at the RDA's Na'vi marines. We know the memories of fallen soldiers have been put in these alien bodies, and it looks an awful lot like Jake may have to battle himself at some point.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, the sequel begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive,  and the tragedies they endure.

Avatar: The Way of Water splashes down in theaters worldwide on December 16.

@Fogs - Sounds like to me he at least hears the complaints about the first one's plot being weak.

3 hours is long, but but those visuals are going to make that time fly i reckon.

I'll be watching, just need to know when's a good time to take a piss break lol.

@CaptainSavaHoe - Disney owns it, so i'm sure they're going to take a cut of their other property (Wakanda Forever) screen showings to amp this one up.

Even if it tanks, i garuntee Disney aren't going to let that be the narative.

I think it's another one with legs though, just wait till a couple week after BP 2 is out. You won't be able to turn your head without seeing the marketing on this one in full force.

Good gracious, can people stop with the Disney producing it means it must be for children nonsense? Are we not beyond the notion of it's subsidiaries?
Urubrodi

@MosquitoFarmer - They think that Disney acts as some overlord that forces its subsidiaries to follow a specific code of conduct where all its products need to be family friendly and funny. When the reality is that the companies under Disney are quite independent. Prey, Hellraiser, Nomadland, Avatar, Andor and so on... are all "Disney" products but I guess it's better to ignore that.

If only there was an intermission factored in, oh well. I'll be there!

@bobevanz - Yeah, i remember there being one when Titanic was released back in the day when double features were still a thing.

But Disney (and other's) dare not do any intermissions today. It would add too much time, delaying when they can rotate out the audience for the next showing.

@UniqNo - I don't remember an intermission for Titanic when I saw it in theaters

But on the VHS it was pretty much forced lol

Am I the only one that thinks the cgi looks fairly wonky?? The landscapes look beautiful but the characters and motions look way off
