There was a lot of scepticism when James Cameron announced his plan to helm a sequel (make that sequels) to his 2009 sci-fi blockbuster, but Avatar: The Way of Water has proven to be a major box office juggernaut in its own right as it climbs higher up the list of the most profitable films ever made.
The latest updates are in, and after crossing the $1.9B mark globally, 20th Century Studios has announced that The Way of Water has officially overtaken Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the sixth highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.
Overseas, the sequel picked up another $9.5M on Monday, bringing its offshore cume to $1,344.6M. It's now the fifth-biggest movie ever internationally.
Can The Way of Water possibly hope to continue this upward trajectory? We wouldn't bet against it!
