When James Cameron first announced his plans for a series of sequels to Avatar, there was quite a bit of scepticism. While the first film was a massive success (it's actually still the highest-grossing movie of all time thanks to a recent re-release), many felt that too much time had passed and interest in a return trip to Pandora would surely have waned.

Well, it's fair to say that the doubters have been proved wrong.

After becoming the fastest movie of 2022 to pass the $1 billion mark globally, The Way of Water has now scored the best January Monday ever with $21.1 million. Its 4-day run was $88M, giving it a running domestic total of $446.1M,

Worldwide, the sci-fi sequel now sits at $1.443 billion, and is expected to hit $1B internationally at some point tonight. The Way of Water is currently the 13th highest-grossing movie of all time globally, passing Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.403B). It is now closing in on Top Gun: Maverick to claim the title of 2022’s biggest release.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.

@MyCoolYoung - not this month. January is the dumping grounds for movies no studio thinks is genuinely gonna turn a profit.

Lol to all those calling this a flop in the second week.

I enjoyed the film significantly more than the first. I’ll stick around to see where Cameron’s vision is taking all this.

Is that 21 million the amount of dollars taken in or the amount of IQ points dropped by the viewers of this movie yesterday?

It's so weird, I know NO ONE that's seen this movie. And I have nerdy friends. Compared to Glass Onion which I feel every one has seen. I look forward to watching this movie in 40 minute chunks on Disney+ not surrounded by crying kids and snorers.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 1/4/2023, 4:02 AM
@Luigi - I know quite a lot of people who have seen it, and quite a few that still want to. And that kinda surprised me. Most people tell they want to see/have seen it because of the visuals, and that in turn doesn't surprise me
BoW
BoW - 1/4/2023, 4:26 AM
@Luigi - You’re comparing viewing frequency of a movie in theatres vs a movie easily available on Netflix which pretty much everyone has these days. So not surprisingly at all that “everyone” has seen Glass Onion.
