When James Cameron first announced his plans for a series of sequels to Avatar, there was quite a bit of scepticism. While the first film was a massive success (it's actually still the highest-grossing movie of all time thanks to a recent re-release), many felt that too much time had passed and interest in a return trip to Pandora would surely have waned.
Well, it's fair to say that the doubters have been proved wrong.
After becoming the fastest movie of 2022 to pass the $1 billion mark globally, The Way of Water has now scored the best January Monday ever with $21.1 million. Its 4-day run was $88M, giving it a running domestic total of $446.1M,
Worldwide, the sci-fi sequel now sits at $1.443 billion, and is expected to hit $1B internationally at some point tonight. The Way of Water is currently the 13th highest-grossing movie of all time globally, passing Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.403B). It is now closing in on Top Gun: Maverick to claim the title of 2022’s biggest release.
