They could not be more different films. But the mind-boggling special effects extravaganza Avatar and the gritty Iraq movie The Hurt Locker (which stars Jeremy Renner, recently rumoured to be in talks to play Marvel's Hawkeye) lead the way in the Bafta shortlists released today.

After that, the most nominations – seven – went to the sci-fi film District 9, with Inglourious Basterds six.

The former married couple James Cameron (Avatar) and Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) are each nominated in the best director category along with Quentin Tarantino (Inglourious Basterds) and Neill Blomkamp for District 9.

The winners will be announced in a ceremony in London on February 21. For a full list of the nominations follow the link below.

My vote for both best film and director has to go to The Hurt Locker!

Avatar was great and all but Kathryn Bigelow created a movie that was just far, far superior IMO.

Hurt Locker was a much better film. It got screwed 9 times over at the Golden Globes. Happy to see that District 9 is finally getting some love as well.

The Hurt Locker. Avatar's all special effects. it should take more than monsters and pretty colors to impress, so easily.

@Tea & Dog- SNAP! I don't want to talk it up too much and boost is reputation higher than it should, but it is a fan-dam-tastic show. One of my favorites from 2009, up there with Watchmen and District 9 easily.

IMO:

The Hurt Locker was the best film of the year-- It instantly became one of my favorite movies.

District 9 was also very good. I think it may even be underrated by most.

LEE: It only came out here on 28th Dec! And I only watched it a few days ago so it actually only took me a fortnight, lol! Avatar was amazing but The Hurt Locker was just better! It may not have had such a big budget, fancy 3D or piles of special effects but it did have a much more interesting story, better actors and was overall just a far more effective and impressive film!

tea: Lol! :) You should check it out man! However, make sure to spend a little extra and buy it on blu-ray! There are some scenes in the movie that just wouldnt be as effective IMO if they werent in HD!

Avatar should get Best Special Effects. The rest of it was a regurgitated/rewritten mediocre film at best.

Hurt Locker all the way! Hollywood's become so dependent upon CGI and stylization to sell movies that we've become desperate for something that looks real

Hollywood lies!!! ugly people do exist, SoCal elitists are not heroic no matter how much money they throw at a natural disaster victims and the world doesn't slow down everytime Angelina Jolie puts on her make up or Ms. Garrison makes a pot of coffee!!!

and while I'm at it... I saw Pandorum last night (w/ Dennis Quad and the creepy blonde kid from 3:10 to Yuma and 30 Days of Night Ben Foster). It is one of the coolest and most original "space ship's crew trapped onboard w/ monsters" movies I've ever seen. Highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't watched it yet

District 9 and Hurt Locker are tied IMO. Both are absolutely amazing films, but for different reasons. I can't choose a clear-cut winner.

Hurt Locker really made me think about just what these soldiers have to do, just to survive. They have to get inside a bomber's head, and there job has no margin for error at all. It was hard-hitting, intense, emotional, you name it. Each actor contributed to the overall success of the film, and contributed excellently at that. It threw me into the minds, shoes, and uniforms of a US soldier and made me really feel what they go through and what they have to do. It was an Iraq war movie, but it wasn't preachy at all, it could be argued it wasn't even about the war itself, it was about the dangerous lives of these brave individuals who have to go out and look for things that can kill them every day. The Hurt Locker wasn't trying to preach to you that "the Iraq war is bad and you should preach against it!" Instead, the film was simply taking you and putting you into the lives of these courageous and troubled men on the front lines. It's a very personal movie.

District 9 made me dislike the main character one second, then sympathize and root for him the next. It truly is remarkable to see the old footage of Wikus at his office talking to the camera, then see a lone Prawn, picking through garbage and looking out into the distance. Quite moving stuff. Heart-pounding action, awe-inspiring visual effects, yet also intelligent and not a brainless sci-fi movie. The clever mixture of apartheid themes and motifs mixed in with the abuse of the Prawns was incredibly effective at making me really take a good look at who we are as human beings, and how much some people are becoming less and less human in their actions. District 9 is very poignant for today's society, and should be looked at thoroughly. The emotional roller coaster it takes you on, the gritty and violent tone, and simply the adventure it follows showing Wikus' journey from being a douche to the Prawns to becoming one of them all strike this chord in me that most films don't even touch.

Both are amazing films, both deserve to win. Avatar I'd give it visual effects awards, sure, but it should not win Best Picture or Best Director.

The Road should be in there somewhere. Truly an amazing film.

District 9 still stands as my favorite film of 2009. Great story, performances, action, and special effects (Honestly, when I was watching D9, there was not a single time that I thought "Wikus is just talking to a CGI creature").

I was shocked at how great The Hurt Locker was. Kathryn Bigelow's best film to date. If there's any movie that should win best picture at the Oscars, or any award show for that matter, it's The Hurt Locker (But only because we all know that D9 will win nothing at the Oscars).

Beautiful Special Effects cannot make up for a somewhat used story, and so-so performances. Avatar is a good film, but certainly not anything deep or moving.

I'm actually very surprised The Road isn't up there in some form. These people are very silly. District 9 was probably my fave out of the list..Hurt Locker and Avatar ar both great movies but in completely different ways and for different reasons. Over all better movie is Hurt Locker.

The Hurt Locker deserves Best pic and director, one of the best films i've seen in the last few years. How Avatar got that many nominations is beyond me. Dont get me wrong i have watched Avatar and i liked it but great CGI doesn't blind me to the fact that the other aspects of the film were average. There were plenty of other films this year that deserve the credit that Avatar is getting, i'm glad District 9 has that many nominations i was pleasently surprised by that film. I agree with the RorMachine the Road should be there but thats the way it goes.

And i cant believe i'm going to say this but i agree with LEEE (no offence dude, our opinions do differ more often than not, but i love reading yur comments), we're comic book movie fans and yet we're all talking about Avatar, i ask you all WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN :)
