BOX OFFICE: BATTLESHIP Passes $100 Million Worldwide

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures and director Peter Berg's Battleship has now crossed $100M internationally and looks set to take reach $126.7M this weekend. While this is of course good news for the studio, the sci-fi blockbuster is under pressure to do as well as possible in the 50 territories it has so far opened in as the rumoured budget of $250M and negative reviews from critics may mean it struggles to make a splash when it finally opens in the US. However, after being released in another 24 territories this weekend, it should gross an additional $56M. You can read my 2* review of Battleship by clicking HERE.

Really?! Jeez... When will pointless meaningless shit like this stop? It's ridicouless how movies like this are successful. I don't care how much action a movie has, if it doesn't have a good story to tell, then I'm not interested.

Has anyone come up with a specific explanation yet for why the country that makes all these [frick]ing movies is the last one that gets to see them?

I know they said "It's a global market now", but that doesn't tell us shit nd still doesn't make sense. Global or not, the U.S. is the single largest, most significant market... what is the logic behind ALWAYS making us wait till last to see movies lately?

Only reason anyone would see this crapfest is Liam Neeson and Alexander Skarsgård and Tadanobu Asano.
Too bad those actors go waste for this kind of movie.

Exactly. But as we adults know this, mindless drones of kids will be intrigued by this spectacle. But it seems that people who work for or are around Mr. Bay forget the other important categories.

I'll answer my own question: They use international markets, positive word of mouth etc. to drum up more business for the domestic opening weekend. So basically, now we see every [frick]ing movie a week or two later than everyone else because the studios want an extra few weeks to sell it to us, and use everyone else as a marketing tool.

So to boil it down: They make us wait longer because they make more money off us. Doesn't make a lick of sense, but there it [frick]ing is.

@ suspense lol I love that metaphor you used about Battleship sinking. I think Avengers is the only reason they released the movie early overseas because it doesn't stand a chance against Avengers. Too bad this crap made money though.

It won't flop, but it isn't going to be a runaway hit either. I'm sure they'll turn a decent profit.

i always treat movies like this as really expensive B-movies - as long as there's some entertainment value to it it's not so bad but it's a shame the talent of a small subset of actors in the movie is so wasted

Just went home from the cinema, it was actually a pretty good movie, very entertaining. i'd give it a 7.5 out of 10, maybe an 8 just for using the AC/DC songs lol.
Can't wait to see the Avengers this tuesday.

@LAX, Superhero Movie, and Ghostfire

Wow. To LAX, i've expressed my love and admiration for Avengers and MCU plenty of times before. Don't be so pissy so quickly

"I don't care how much action a movie has, if it doesn't have a good story to tell, then I'm not interested."

I LOVE what the Avengers is doing but honestly its story isn't its major appeal. The character interactions and them fighting together is why people go to see it. With Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 confirmed, you know the earth will be saved.

Not trying to say Avengers is bad but I wouldn't call it a good story...so I just found it hilariously ironic what you said Ghostfire.

After all Transformers 3 made a lot of money too.. i go to the cinema mostly for the visual effects.. if not there are always the dvds
Superheromovie
Superheromovie - 4/21/2012, 5:40 PM
@ Thewonderer Just because you know they save the day doesn't mean the story is bad. A story is all about how you tell something. I haven't spoiled myself yet but judging by what critics are saying I can tell the story was told well. It will be the same for Batman. I know Bane will be beaten but the story of how he is beaten is what's important. I love SFX but if movies like transformers and battleship are going to have that and nothing else then I'm not interested but I might check it out.

Damn, looks like Hasbro definitely has another winner here. The next GI Joe movies looks like it'll wash away the bitter taste of the first one out of the moviegoers mouths to and... The Rock is in it. Nuff said.

No doubt they'll continue adapting their toylines to movies from here since there obviously is a market for them. The only question is what they'll decide to do next. There's been talk of Candyland, Monopoly, and Jem and the Holograms so wouldn't be surprised to see one of those happening. Interesting things going on with Hasbro, very interesting... if things keep going the way they do perhaps they'll be the next Marvel and produce their own studio?

thewonderer

@superheromovie

With a movie like TDKR, you don't know if Bane will truly be beaten. Joker wasn't beaten. He proved he was right even if caught in the end. He ended Batman too.

Well you know the story itself won't be all too unique in the end. Maybe the beginning yes.

I mean compare a movie like Avengers to The Departed or Godfather or Memento.

My point is story isn't what the Avengers has going for it. That doesn't mean its bad, but just not its strong suit
Superheromovie
Superheromovie - 4/21/2012, 6:21 PM
@ thewonderer I wont disagree with you but I still think comparing Battleship and Avengers is not right. :p
