Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (which has been met with unanimously positive reviews) opened in North America last night to a pretty impressive $4.1 million. Hit the jump for details on that and more on what the movie is expected t earn this weekend...
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been released in both North America and a handful of other international locations today (though it doesn't hit many of the latter until the World Cup concludes later this month), and it kicked off its run with late Thursday evening and midnight showings domestically last night. There, the Matt Reeves helmed sequel earned an impressive $4.1 million and prerelease tracking indicated that the critically acclaimed sequel could earn upwards of $60 million this weekend. Of course, tracking has been very hit and miss this year, so Fox are estimating a slightly more conservative $55 million debut. With so many great reviews and positive word of mouth, it could easily pass that though. In 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes opened with $54 million, and the sequel - which cost roughly $170 million to make - has ever chance of topping the $481.8 million at the worldwide box office grossed by the first instlment.
