BOX OFFICE: DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Earns $4.1M At Late Thursday Showings

Matt Reeves' Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (which has been met with unanimously positive reviews) opened in North America last night to a pretty impressive $4.1 million. Hit the jump for details on that and more on what the movie is expected t earn this weekend...

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has been released in both North America and a handful of other international locations today (though it doesn't hit many of the latter until the World Cup concludes later this month), and it kicked off its run with late Thursday evening and midnight showings domestically last night. There, the Matt Reeves helmed sequel earned an impressive $4.1 million and prerelease tracking indicated that the critically acclaimed sequel could earn upwards of $60 million this weekend. Of course, tracking has been very hit and miss this year, so Fox are estimating a slightly more conservative $55 million debut. With so many great reviews and positive word of mouth, it could easily pass that though. In 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes opened with $54 million, and the sequel - which cost roughly $170 million to make - has ever chance of topping the $481.8 million at the worldwide box office grossed by the first instlment.

Just a grunt in a bind in his homeland
Taking orders from a very very bad man
Just yer average Dieter, Helmut, or a Bertrand
I can waste him 'cause I know I never never shook his hand

Killed by a hero, what are we supposed to do?

just a loser with a girlfriend getting fat and
participation in a very very bad plan
In a nation where the bastards are the unplanned
we can waste it cuz it's such a teeny tiny hand

Killed by procedure, what are we supposed to do

(And Cornelius says)
Ape shall never kill ape
I say wouldn't that be great?
But some apes, they just gotta go
We kill the ones that we don't know

Not a nobody, an actual American
beaten silly by another Jody Foster fan
Spend a fortune to debate the moral conflict and
He's protected through it's obvious he killed a man

Killed by the system, what are we supposed to do?

OK maybe not hands down.

X-Men First Class and Captain America came out in 2011 so competition was there....but Rise of the PotA was just phenominal and was my #1.

This film actually deserves a lot more money, more money than Age of Extinction.

Gotta wait a week. Glad to hear it's good!

Also, a friend of mine last week said these movies were a bastardisation of the originals and desecrate them on every ground possible. I don't like him too much anymore.

Great movie with great acting, direction, script and has relevant commentary and parallels with real life = Doomed to make less money than Transformers which has explosions.

@NovaCorpsFan I think these films are a prequel-reboot. So I guess it's going to be entirely open ended whether they're in the same universe or not.

@MrCBM

Yeah, that's essentially what they are. I mean, they've already made Conquest and Battle moot as well as Escape, but they referenced the Icarus leaving Earth in Rise.

This movie was biting, overwrought and pointless. I loved the first one, it's one of my all time faves. This was disappointing. People laughed during scenes that weren't meant to be funny, that was the best part!
