BOX OFFICE: LOOPER Takes #1 At The Worldwide Box Office; Set For #4 In North America

Last week, we brought you the news that Looper had earned an incredible $24 million in China; a total which actually surpassed the amount made in North America. Since then, there have been a few conflicting reports, with one news agency in China even claiming that the film took a total of only $5 million over the course of the weekend! Regardless, Variety are reporting that the film is now #1 worldwide with a cume of around $62 million ($37 million of which comes solely from international territories). In Russia, it took $4.5 million, $3.9 million in the UK and $3 million in Australia. However, it's unlikely that it will hold on to the top spot with Liam Neeson starrer Taken 2 hitting most theatres across the world this weekend. As for how Looper is currently performing stateside, it made $3.5 million yesterday for a predicted total of $11.6 million.

In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a "looper" – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to "close the loop," sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

STARRING:

Bruce Willis as Joseph Simmons
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joseph Simmons
Emily Blunt as Sara
Paul Dano as Seth
Noah Segan as Kid Blue
Jeff Daniels as Jack Mitchell
Piper Perabo as Suzie
Garret Dillahunt as Jesse

Loved this film, glad a smallish film made so much money. Puts a lot of blockbusters this year to shame

^CBM.com expanded to covering sci-fi, action, novel adaptations etc. long ago. The sooner you come to terms with that the better.

And this film deserves to do well. It was pretty good.

SaintSpidey, stop whining on Josh's articles just because you hold a grudge against him. You're just making yourself look like a troll.
As for covering Looper, it's sci-fi based and has people who worke on CBMs before, which qualifies it being on the site.

All of those films that you've mentioned (except I don't think Hunger Games has had an official comic book) have had comic book/graphic novel adaptations. Nice try.

I think it depends on the topic of the film. If its something that's sci-fi, fantasy or horror related, and its something that geeks can get into (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Looper, etc.), then it can be covered. Action films like Bond and Expendables are on here because they both have comic book tie ins. However, if it doesn't have a comic book adaptation or any other sort of CBM connection (such as Taken, End Of Watch, Hotel Transylvania, etc.), then it can't be covered on the site. Although we do make occasional exceptions with the likes of Bourne and Jack Ryan, for example.

This site should be considered more of a pop culture site & many past, present & future movies of many genres fall into that catagory.

Comic books should be main focus but pop culture coolness should never be overlooked.

Just saw Looper today. Outstanding performances from the whole cast, Gordon-Levitt was perfect. It's profound themes of violence and what-goes-around-comes-around have me thinking to this moment. And that young boy was frightening. Worth the matinee.

Ive not seen it yet i hope to see it soon. but a big part of the reason its number 1 is in my oppinion the other movie choices to see arnt as good.

@DocDeath - Are you trying to troll? Or are you just dumb?

SPOILER ALERT!!! - Anyway, while Looper was an awesome, enjoyable movie, it always bugs me when a movie's time travel mechanics aren't internally consistent. I mean, it seems like Bruce Willis is from an alternate timeline (where he killed his older self), but then when JGL scars himself, or just does stuff in general, it also happens to Bruce Willis or he remembers it. So.... are they from separate timelines? Or are they linked? Cuz the way that they resolve the end of the movie by creating a paradox in order to end a different paradox can be kind of annoying.

@GrayMatter - They didn't create a Paradox or an Alternate timeline. It's one timeline, the story focuses in the past of that timeline, which is why we see the future Bruce Willis (or current to that timeline) coming back from the future to disrupt it and ultimately the younger Bruce (JGL who is the past Bruce to the timeline) making the choice to change it.

@FightmasterNoel - Why would you think Dredd would beat a movie like Looper at the box office? The other movies on release has nothing to do with its success, it's just a damn well written and filmed movie. If that wasn't the case, then Dredd would have made more money than the mere $22 million worldwide having being released for over a month now. In comparison Looper in just has taken more than twice that worldwide in just a week.

Dredd just doesn't have much going for it apart form extreme violence which isn't to everyones taste, domestic or worldwide. Looper on the other hand is a film with genuine depth and intrigue.

@Ceejay
You just don't pay much attention when you watch movies do you?
There was more than the great violence that was definitely needed in the DREDD movie.

Dredd himself had no character arc nor was one needed for him,his motivations are clear & brutal..he's an exterminator of the criminal vermin.

However,Judge Anderson was the crux of the storyline where she was the seed that was planted into the cruel world of Mega City One.
Under the guidance & extreme example of Dredd she grew from that weak seed into the strong Judge she needed to become.

It was a film about "trial by fire"..lie down & die or fight back & dispense justice with a bullet!
