BOX OFFICE: Rupert Wyatt's Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes Passes $400 Million Worldwide!

With many "big" movies breaking all kinds of records at the worldwide box office, this is one of the few films that is definitely a huge surprise of the summer. Rupert Wyatt-directed sci-fi origin story has passed the $400 million mark.

Here is a great news for the studio and everyone who wants to see a sequel...Rupert Wyatt's science fiction film Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes has passed the $400 million mark at the worldwide box office. The Hollywood Reporter has more info on recent numbers over the weekend:



"Twentieth Century-Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes collected another $5.8 million at 3,530 situations in 36 markets. An Italy bow generated $1.9 million from 541 sites."


So, as of now, Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes is on $173 million domestically, and on $228 million internationally. It is officially the most successful film in the franchise. Film had a $93 million budget. Plus, it received a lot of positive reviews (82% on Rotten Tomatoes) with critics and fans saying that Andy Serkis' amazing motion capture performance as 'Caesar' is one of the best things in the movie.

This movie deserves the success it gets. Very entertaining and story driven film. Even thought Franco gets the top billing, this movie makes it clear that Caesar is the real star of this film. Already stoked for the next one. :D

c'mon grif,give it a chance,I was reluctant to see it too (I was like "monkeys? really?"),but it was one of the best movies of the summer IMO

@Grif....you also have to consider that the Smurfs is more marketable for Children than Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The subject manner and tones are vastly different but RPA is CLEARLY 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 %BETTER than that atrocity that was THE SMURFS

@marvel72 $220 million profit you think the studio gets all the money it makes at the boxoffice more like 50% what about advertising costs ,cost of prints and the actual theatre does take some of the money you are paying to see the movie.

@grif you should watch it, I expected it to be good before I saw it, but it was way better than I thought it'd be, one of the best films of 2011 IMO.

Definitely getting this on blu ray! But this should definitely have made more than the Smurfs... Maybe some of the Smurfs audience thought it was the sequel to avatar or something

That's not correct, sorry!

ILM perfected that technique with Pirates of the Caribbean 2 Dead Man's Chest (2006). The film shot the actors with motion capture markers when they were acting on the set and with *no* green screen:

@JLA2014 - The rule of thumb to see if a movie is successful is to deduct twice the production costs from the box office take. This covers marketing and the theater take.

Thor: $448,512,824 - $300,000,000 ($150 mil budget x 2) = $148,512,824 profit

Captain America: $360,792,962 - $280,000,000 ($140 mil prod. budget x 2) = $80,792,962 profit and still counting

X-Men: First Class: $352,613,756 - $320,000,000 ($160 mil prod. budget x 2) = $32,613,756 profit

Green Lantern: $219,843,191 - $400,000,000 ($200 mil prod. budget x 2) = $180,156,809 IN THE HOLE

Now, which one of these can be considered a flop?
