David Duchovny Wants More X-FILES Movies; Trashes GREEN LANTERN

The actor discusses being "perplexed" that Fox Studios haven't made any more movies based on the hugely popular tv series, and takes the opportunity to have a go at a rival studio's movie - Green Lantern - in the process..

Just in case you weren't aware, David Duchovny played Fox Mulder in the insanely popular sci-fi series, The X-Files. Since that show went off the air, we have had two big screen outings for he and his on-screen partner -- who is now rumored to be his off-screen partner too -- Gillian Anderson. One was pretty good, one..wasn't (although to be fair, I am probably one of the few who thought X-Files: I Want To Believe had some merit), but regardless Duchovny wants another crack at it. He says that he's "perplexed" that Fox won't take an already established franchise and run with it, saying if the opportunity arose he would "love to do another film, or more.". He then goes on to take a shot at Warner Bros. Green lantern, apparently as an example of a gamble with a new property that didn't pay off.

"Here’s a homegrown property that you don’t have to go buy, like fu**in’ Green Lantern or something, to make it. Here you’ve got an actual action franchise that’s your own. It’s weird to me, but I’m not an executive. I don’t know if they made the Green Lantern either, but I’m just using that as an example of, 'Why make that film? Why not make a homegrown franchise that is excellent, and that has proven to be excellent and interesting?' I don’t get it, but that’s not my business."

Ok, I don't think anyone will argue with him about Green Lantern being a disappointment, but that doesn't mean that a studio should never take a chance on an untested property. I mean, to his point, would anyone even want another X-Files movie now? -- aside from Duchovny of course. What do you think of his remarks? Sound off in the usual place, and check out the full interview by clicking the link back to Collider below.

GL was bad because the studio messed it up. Even with everything if they had of let the other GL's show up to fight the bad guy, like the director wanted it would have been better.

Why not take a chance on GL? I would far rather see a good GL movie than another X-Files film. GL has long-term potential (which it may yet someday realize, because it's a great straight SF story), whereas XF has IMHO pretty much passed its End of Days...

lol nobody wants another X-Files movies. This franchise is old and boring i agree that green lantern was a disappointment in so many levels but if they find the right director and reboot it it can be so much better

X-Files? Really? Are you just finding it difficult to get another gig? Aw, poor baby. GTFOH!!!

Nobody wants to see the X-Files! Its been almost 20 years! Lots of the movie going audience didn't even watch X-Files. (I was a kid when it came on. I found the theme song so insanely creepy I didn't even wanna watch it lol.)

There's a new audience these days and guess what whatever your name is - X-Files guy - CBMs are in! Old TV shows are out! The only ones that get made get rebooted which means you still won't have a job with the way Hollywood is today! Get on with the times!

Green Lantern was sh*t. The studio meddling with it alone wasn't the issue. The whole production team was the issue. Acting, directing, editing, writing - you name it, it was bad.

Actually he has a job on Californication. Which is a pretty good show. From someone who was an X-Files nut during it's run, I can tell you that they have several stories left to tell. The one that intrigues me still is what about Scully's son (and presumably Mulders too)? He had some level of alien physiology to him that was never really delved into. That could have led to another alien invasion/conspiracy storyline. The last movie was decent at best and I am afraid they will never get the chance to try again.

The Green Lantern had a great cast, I even didn't mind the Director.

The whole tone of the film was off. It didn't take itself seriously, so why should the audience? The writing was cheesey.

I think they should make a sequel, focusing on giving it a more mature tone, with improved special effects and focusing less on outer-space (since the effects for that were probably its weakest) and then it'll be a hit.

And not that it matters, but the first X-Files movie came out during the shows run and closed the gap between season 5 and season 6. Something I wish more tv shows would do. Oh...and the movie was awesome.

Eh, he's confused and picked a bad example (he admitted that he didn't know if Fox made The Green Lantern)... He was probably thinking of Fox's Marvel movies, which they do indeed have to pay to do, instead of Warner Bros. Green Lantern which actually was a "home grown" property to that studio.

He was basically saying the studio should build upon their own properties like The X-files, rather than go out and buy other ones to turn into a flick.

The X-files films have suffered from Chris Carter not knowing how to make a movie out of his show. Given the premise I'm sure it could be leveraged into some very entertaining and popular films.

Well GL was a creative [frick] up but has immense potential.
The X files was awesome but where else could they take it? Past its prime unless its rebooted.
Mulder sounds like sore looser.

Scully is HOT btw.

I wasnt a fan of the Green Lantern movie, but it sounds like someone is afraid of their star fading lol

Nah, I get that he's passionate about X-files. It was a good show and that was thing for awhile.

I suppose I'd be that way too if I saw potential in something and was being skipped over by the sequel/pre-quel/reboot/remake-milk it for all its worth train.

Some of you guys are ignoring the fact that he's on the a hit show, Californication. He's not desperate for a job. He just wants more time with his baby, X-Files. And I think it's just to expand more upon that universe. There's a lot of room.

I was a huge X Files fan when it was on, I hope they make another movie to wrap up the alien invasion storyline. I liked the second movie too, although I think it was a bit too much like an episode of Millennium (TV show done by the same guy who created The X Files). I'd settle for a TV miniseries too if Fox doesn't want to make another movie. Duchovny's right about Green Lantern too, that movie was by far the worst experience I've ever had at a theater.

1: Green Lantern is a DC character. DC is owned by WB. Thus, GL is a homegrown property.

2: Didn't Duchovny walk away from X-Files for basically 2 seasons?

3: The second movie was unwatchable.

4: That all being said, yes please to more X-Files.

I really don't think was a jab at GL. He could have easily said Annie or anything else. He was just pulling something out of his a**.

"Thanks to X-Men and Bryan Singer creating this craze, it proves just how difficult the formula is when creating CBM's."

I would have to say it started with Burton. Because in the 90's there was The Shadow, Rocketeer, Phantom, Dick Tracy, Spawn and more. It spread to tv too with the Flash.

It may have even started with Reeve. Afterwards there were all the DC and Marvel tv movies and shows.

GL wasn't a bought property, but Warner owns DC and therefore GL anyway. But beside that mistake I would like to see a third X files movie, too. But I think the article is mistaken, too. Only the last/second X files movie was made after the tv show had ended.

Bring on a threequel but only if you combine the second movie with the deeper mythology of the tv series - resembled in the first movie (the biggest/only problem off the second movie was imo that it was ignoring that theme at all). Tie it together! If they do that successfully a fourth film might be fine.

Ror, for once, I agree with everything you said. "I want to Believe" did have merit; GL was bad, but the studio was correct in GLing the project (see what I did there?), they needed to do something in the CBM world, they just did it very badly. And who wants to see another X-Files movie, except Duchovny? Well, me, but I'm not a Fox exec... if I was, I'd probably say no, and I was a big fan of the show.
