The director of Dune might have had a different spin on episode VI.

After directing "Elephant Man", David Lynch spoke with the Beard about directing "Return of the Jedi". As it turns out, David went on to direct 1984's "Dune".

This interview was a few weeks ago at New York's Russian Tea Room. Can you picture Darth Vader with an oxygen mask a la Frank Booth (Blue Velvet)?

Thank God he didn't otherwise it could've been boring as Dune was not a fan of Dune at all

Oh man, I love Dune but I like Jedi the way it is, muppets and all. I like my films to be somewhat linear. I think Dune was the last film he made that was anywhere close to linear.

I think people would have gotten lost with a Lynch Jedi movie

I think that migrain was God's way of saying he wasn't the right man to direct the film.

Yeah I love Lynch but that probably would have been a BAD fit.

@ Betty: I understand what yer saying. But I must say that Wild At Heart, Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, and Lost Highway all had some linear parts in them. In fact I would say that Blue Velvet is almost entirely linear with some small flashes of coneptual/non narrative parts.

It would have been interesting, that's for sure. I'm not willing to say it should have happened though. Interesting doesn't mean better :D

David Lynch shouldn't be allowed within a mile of a film set. The man is incapable of telling a cohesive story.

Nice article man. Congrats! way to jump in with both feet.

I will follow Betty's lead and say, while I really like David Lynch 's earlier work, I'm glad he didn't do Jedi.
Lynch's movies have fallen off dramatically the last 10 or so years IMO. From Lost Highway on... dogshit.

If Lynch did Jedi, then no Twin Peaks, so it worked out for all of us.

@ Billy: Yeah Lost Highway was a stinker. What did you think about Mulholland Dr? I didn't much like it, either.

I tried to keep up with Twin Peaks but I just couldn't do it.

I love Lynch. At worst his movies are at least interesting and original, at best masterpieces.

I blind bought it on dvd per a freinds recommendation. That was an absolute waste of 3 hours and 15 bucks. I told my buddy to keep his fkn opinions to himself after that ^_^ If you need a set of cliffs notes to understand a movie, then they are trying too hard. Long, boring and utterly confusing. It had that same Lost Highway feel to it, but he made it even more difficult to follow. The box? The lamp? Who gives a shit.

Ror01

His early stuff was his best. Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, DUNE, The Twin Peaks series (the first 17-18 episodes anyway.) All gold IMO. But he's really shit the bed of late.
