Talking to Vulture at the Cannes Film Festival about his latest movie, Only God Forgives (the trailer for which can be viewed below), Nicolas Winding Refn confirmed that he is still hard at work on the small screen adaptation of Barbarella. The Drive helmer is attached to direct the series, while well-known James Bond collaborators Neal Purvis and Robert Wade were brought on to write the project. "We are just writing it still," Refn confirmed when asked for an update. "I kind of went back to the original comic, and really began to close my eyes and fantasize about women in outer space and it looked pretty good." As for whether he has anyone in mind to replace Jane Fonda, he said: "No, I haven’t started casting yet." There's still no word on a possible release date or even which network Barbarella will air on, but be sure to stay tuned to CBM for further updates.

Last I heard Only God Forgives is getting raked over the coals by the critics at Cannes.

Well, if critics didn't like it, it doesn't mean it is bad. I'm still looking forward to it.

I thought Barbarella was a Robert Rodriguez project.

Well, if he can make a badass female protagonist work, I say, give him Wonder Woman.

The only person I can see as Barbarella is Alice Eve.

TV show? I thought this was going to be another movie. Uhhhh, so I guess it's safe to assume it's not going to be on a regular network then.

When I first found about this project, I went and saw the film for the first time. Damn, Jane Fonda was impossibly hot and gorgeous too. They're really going to have to fish for a girl to match up, can't just go with bland ol' porn star hot.

Wow, I have to say, Eve looks a lot like a young Jane Fonda!

For what it's worth, my 2 euro cents on OGF since it's already been released in France :
Hyperboring.
If you loved Drive, don't expect anything like it, there's no story, no real plot beyond vengeance (for bad reasons) and Gosling playing a silent weak Mama's boy (and I mean it, I can't spoil the ending but UGH*).
The movie is 1h30 but feels twice as long ; it's not as boring as Cosmopolis but it's very close and keep in mind that for one 5s gory moment, you'll have to suffer 2 minutes of Thaï karaoke (seriously).
HUGE disappointment (and yes I've seen other films from Refn, Pusher trilogy, Valhalla Rising, etc) but this time he went full autist...

Alice Eve is decent casting. She looks like Fonda as Barbarella. But something doesn't quite click. Perhaps there's just no getting better than Jane Fonda in that role.
Wasn't Rodriguez thinking of that chick from Charmed and Doom Generation that used to be Mrs Marylin Manson? Can't remember her name. That would've been an interesting choice. Or was she just gona be Red Sonja? Or am I just totally senile?
I think if you're trying to cast somebody as Jane Fonda as Barbarella, then you're always going to be second best. Perhaps it would be best, in this instance, to think a little out of the box. Who knows if that Rose McGowan, that was her name, who knows if she woulda been the best choice. But it's at least an interesting risk. I think you have to take risks for this part. If they pay off, they'll pay off in spades, like Ledger as Joker. If not, they won't. Like that Lost guy as Joker in Dark Knight Returns.
I like this Refn guy. Critics bashing one of his films definitely does not mean they ain't worth watching. Both Bronson and Valhalla are very interesting films. Equal parts pretentious and genius.
But if he was gonna do Wonder Woman for the same reasons that he's gonna do Barbarella, then Hell-to-the-No!

riseofLOGAN@ I think they were all speaking far too soon about Witchblade. But, apparantly McFarlane has made a lot of progress on the Spawn screenplay, over the last 10 years.

@Marvels1stFan

you are a God amongst the sheep who believe IM3 was anything more than a piece of utter trash.

I can remember did howard the ducks pathetic girlfriend go super nova ninja style and save the hero's and everybody else's ass?.

O yeah thats right i just watched the 1984 karate kid again and danielsons girlfriend totally kicks ass in the end winning the tournament and kicking everyone else's ass . yes. great movie making!!

I am so hoping lois lane can defeat General Zod, save superman's pathetic lamo ass and the entire earth in man of steel movie as well. MOS must also have not have general Zod be a super powered kryptonian but a stage actor from a Broadway play. That way it can be the highest grossing piece of trash movie of all time like IM3.
