DUNE 2: Austin Butler Improvised That Creepy Kiss Because He Knew Stellan Skarsgård Was "Game For Anything"

Austin Butler, who plays Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two, has revealed that he improvised that creepy kiss with co-star Stellan Skarsgård (Baron Harkonnen)...

Austin Butler has revealed that one brief moment from Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two that's gained quite a bit of attention online was completely improvised.

Shortly after we're introduced to Butler's Feyd-Rautha in the movie, his uncle, The Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård), holds a ceremony to officially name his nephew as his successor. The Baron plants a light kiss on Feyd, and the psychotic warrior responds by grabbing his uncle and kissing him far more aggressively on the lips.

In the book, the Baron is depicted as a twisted predator who appears to harbour incestuous desires for his nephew, which Feyd is well aware of. This kiss may have been a nod to the characters' dynamic on the page, but it also seemed to represent Feyd sizing an opportunity to make it clear that he had no intention of backing down if it came to a power struggle.

During an interview with Access Hollywood, the Oscar-nominated Elvis star confirmed that he improvised the kiss on the day.

“[The kiss] with Stellan Skarsgård? Oh yeah!” Butler said when asked if the moment was on the fly. “He’s game for anything. He’s the best…it’s always about how you’re trying to affect somebody else.”

Do you plan on seeing Dune: Part Two this weekend? Drop us a comment down below.

"Those hoping for blockbuster escapism might find themselves shook by this faithful, at times borderline depressing adaptation," we said in our review. "But Dune Part Two is Sci-fi spectacle at its finest and most audacious, as Villeneuve builds-upon and possibly surpasses (opinions will vary) his previous film with aplomb."

The saga continues as award-winning filmmaker Denis Villeneuve embarks on Dune: Part Two, the next chapter of Frank Herbert’s celebrated novel Dune, with an expanded all-star international ensemble cast. The film, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, is the highly anticipated follow-up to 2021’s six-time Academy Award-winning Dune.

The big-screen epic continues the adaptation of Frank Herbert’s acclaimed bestseller Dune with returning and new stars, including Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (Wonka, Call Me by Your Name), Zendaya (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Malcolm & Marie, Euphoria), Rebecca Ferguson (Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning), Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame, Milk), Oscar nominee Austin Butler (Elvis, Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood), Oscar nominee Florence Pugh (Black Widow, Little Women), Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Love and Thunder), Oscar winner Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter,), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Fences), Léa Seydoux (James Bond, Crimes of the Future), with Stellan Skarsgård (Avengers: Age of Ultron), Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (45 Years, Assassin’s Creed), and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Being the Ricardos).

Dune: Part Two will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

@JuanRGuijarro - The Boys is a story with something to say. Marvel is just a rollercoaster at this point. Other than Black Panther, Cap films, first Iron Man, a few Avengers films; they're just roller coaster films with nothing to say. In other words, they're bad comedies at this point.

@lord22 - I bet you "groom" didn't mean then what people think it means now.

@bl0odwerk - The term grooming has been used the way folk think it means now since at least the 70's, however someonesaying in the here and now he was being groomed in the book is using the modern meaning of the term anyway even if not in use back then.

Initially, law enforcement investigators began using the term in the late 1970s to describe aspects of a seduction pattern of offender behavior that was poorly understood by most professionals. Over time, the term evolved and gained common usage among law enforcement, other professionals, the media, and laypersons

@Apophis71 - The sexual definition is WAY down the list. Context is also key. Pretty sure it didn't mean dude wanted to [frick] him.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 3/5/2024, 12:54 PM
@bl0odwerk - BTW I would say the book kept it a tad vague and open to interpretation, it is not unreasonable to read the book and draw a strong conclusion the Baron had a darker fascination to the point of full blown homoerotic atraction to Feyd and thus grooming in the modern senses present. However the book also strongly suggests that Feyd would violantly reject any such advances to other viewpoints...

...but grooming in the older sense (as in training, crafting, preparing for a role sans any darker intent) was certainly in play either way but the book does paint the idea that there is a deeper but enigmatic connection between the two which is left to the readers interpretation.

Although not part of the list of books written by Herbert the Dune Encyclopedia does state that their is an incestuous relationship between the Baron and Feyd.

@bl0odwerk - Just because he improvised on the day doesn't mean he didn't tell/ask Stellan before he did it. Improvised means it was in the script before the day of the shoot.

@MarkCassidy - People have been on the site complaining for years about the qaulity of articles being put on this site and instead of sitting back and taking a second to listen to your supporters, you shut them up? The literally put up and (exclusive) interview with MW about a movie that has nothing to do with CMB. Back in the day you guess were deleting articles right and left because of grammatical errors, now on his other article he literally wrote the same paragraph twice. Where's the professionalism. Josh even blocked me on twitter because I told him that he, twice in the span of 1 hour, posted the same article that someone else had posted.
