DUNE Off To A Promising Start At Domestic Box Office With $5.1M From Thursday Night Preview Screenings

While the movie's opening weekend haul is obviously TBD, Denis Villeneuve's Dune is off to a strong start at the domestic box office after taking in over $5 million from Thursday preview screenings.

Denis Villeneuve's Dune only went on wide release in the U.S. today, but the movie is already off to a great start after holding preview screenings at 3,200 theaters last night.

Deadline reports that the epic sci-fi adaptation took in $5.1 million from Thursday showings, besting the preview takings of Warner Bros.' recent The Suicide Squad ($4.1M) and last week's Halloween Kills ($4.85M). Dune is tracking towards a $30M-$35M opening weekend domestically, though exhibitors have indicated that it could end up being significantly higher since presales "are squashing everything that’s come before it, i.e. No Time to Die, and Marvel's Shang-Chi."

The film is still expected to make upwards of $70M globally after a $6.5M opening day in China. Estimates could be off, of course, especially in the current climate, but this is definitely a positive sign that Villeneuve will be given the opportunity to return to Arrakis and finish this story (if you don't mind spoilers, you can find out how the ending sets up Part 2 here).

WarnerMedia CEO Ann Sarnoff recently suggested that a follow-up may already be greenlit. “Will we have a sequel to Dune? If you watch the movie you see how it ends. I think you pretty much know the answer to that.”

What did you guys make of Dune? Are you excited to see a sequel? Drop us a comment down below, and check out our review if you're still on the fence about seeing the movie on the big screen.

WarnerMedia CEO Ann Sarnoff's reply is so patently stupid. They wouldn't make two parts in one go, LOTR-style, because they "wanted to wait and see how it performed" ... but now they are saying "If you see how it ends..."

Which one is it? Absolute morons at the head of WB.

Watching Dune is like walking into a deep convo between two people and just being lost on the topic at hand.🙎

Watching Dune is like going into the far left lane on a freeway going 55 when everyone else is going 70mph🙎

Its like that🤔

Loved the film! Can’t say how people who haven’t read the novel will respond but it’s the best book to film adaption I’ve seen in a long time.

Yikes. I wish I re-read the book before watching it. I was already somewhat familiar going in and it was still... a lot.

Not sure how non-readers would feel.

@Vanillain - this is true, my wife was pretty lost and it took her out of the film. But it wasn’t hard to explain it to her however if I have to explain it, then the movie didn’t do the best job of interpreting its story

@Vanillain - as a non-reader I can tell you not everything made sense. The basics where there and the most important stuff could be filled in with a little effort, but I still think they could've done a better job.

It took me reading the wikipedia page of the book that I learned how rich the lore was

@bkmeijer - This is the thing: Villeneuve made a conscious decision to strip down a lot of that lore in order to keep from overwhelming the audience. He's not taking every opportunity to explain what a mentat is, or the Landsraad, or CHOAM, or going into greater detail with the Shipping Guild or the Bene Gesserit. You need all those elements in a Dune movie and they're there, but if you're stopping every 10 minutes for an exposition bukkake then you run the risk of muddling things rather than making them clearer. (Which is what a lot of people think Lynch's Dune is a disjointed mess.) It's just a hard, hard story to translate via film, which is why a series might have been better served. At the same time, as a long-time fan, this is an absolutely brilliant adaptation for me so I'm thrilled with what we got.

@dmac3232 - yeah that is very true. And I wouldn't have wanted explanations of everyone's jobs either.

My problem was more with how the different factions all were positioned opposite each other though. And that is something they could've integrated a bit more natural than exposition dumps.

For example, I'm still wondering why the Harkonnen's were mad at the house of Atreides, even though they were put on Arakis by the Emperor. Or why they don't rely on technology as much

@Vanillain - I read the book, watched the Lynch movie, and the early 2000s TV mini series (if all about 15-20 years ago), so I had somewhat of an idea about what was going on, and what was missing.

Really would have liked to hear what my girlfriend made of the movie, since she'd had zero exposure to Dune so far, but she couldn't make it when I saw it. Next chance: home release.

@bkmeijer - Yeah, the prohibition on AI is a huge, huge element of Dune lore, and one of my personal favorites things about it, and they don't even touch on it here. A lot of things they at least mentioned so you can put 2 and 2 together -- this movie asks you to do a lot of that; YMMV -- but in that instance there wasn't even a single line.

I thought they spelled out well enough that the Harkonnen and Atreides had been involved in a long-running blood feud, and that's really all you needed to know. But then I'm very familiar with this story and it's hard for me to assess objectively. Personally, the one scene I thought was probably going to confuse most people was the Sardaukar ceremony. It was deeply weird and I loved it, but I bet people coming in dark had absolutely no clue what any of that was about.

Again, it's just a hard, hard story to adapt. Reading through various reactions on reddit over the past few months, a ton of book fans have their quibbles with what went in and what was left out. Everybody has their favorite stuff; for example, there's a huge banquet scene with a handful of people verbally jousting with each other that fleshes out a ton of cultural and political details. In my case, I didn't miss it at all. I saw some complaints that the movie didn't spell out the need for extreme water discipline well enough, where I thought they did so throughout. So again, YMMV.

I will say this, as much as I loved it, I do know this movie isn't going to be for everybody. But if you're on the same wave length, as I was, it was absolutely mind-blowing.

I thought it was pretty good, but I didn't love it. It looks incredible, I liked the setting, the cast is great, but I wasn't emotionally invested in it or the characters. When that happens, you really feel the length of the movie as well. I am still looking forward to the sequel, if it happens. There is a lot to admire about it.

This movie really needed a Part 2 to tie it all together. I enjoyed it though great looking movie.

@PantherKing - I didn't read the book and loved the movie! I was able to comprehend and follow the plot. Watched the Lynch version today and it was truly awful. Felt like it was 5 hours long and rushed at the same time. Nice set design though!

@TheRidd1er - I still have some affection for it, and it does get some stuff right, at least from a visual standpoint. But yes, for the most part, it's a pretty horrendous film. I re-watched it for the first time in a while on Max the other day, and you're just racing through plot points to get to the finish line.

@PantherKing - I’ve never read the books, but I have always had an interest in dune hearing my dad talk about how great it was and would tell me (verbally) story’s about dune without the actual book in hand. That’s the extent of my knowledge of the story.
My wife on the other hand knew nothing at all. I followed the story almost to a T except for one part (which I was able to rewind thanks to streaming on HBO) and we both loved it and have orders the books to read because we can’t wait for the second one to come out to know more.

@PantherKing - Better avoid the Lynch one then! But yes, the new does still throw a lot of things at you. Admittedly you have to pay close attention!
