GLASS Star Samuel L. Jackson On The Success Of The MCU And The Failings Of Other Superhero Movies

Spider-Man: Far From Home's Samuel L. Jackson talks about the success of superhero movies in Hollywood and expresses his surprise that certain other studios haven't found as much success as the MCU...

Samuel L. Jackson has been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since day one when he appeared in Iron Man's after-credits scene. At the moment, though, he's starring in a very different superhero movie: Glass. During an interview with Digital Spy, the legendary actor explained that he doesn't think the perception of the genre has changed.

Instead, he thinks that it "took a while to come around and get to those other things."

"There have always been things like that. Even when I was a kid, we had Buck Rogers and some other things that were super in another kind of way, but not just quite that," he continued.

"Most times, the super things tended to be monster movies, even the Japanese versions of Godzilla and Rodan, all those things, I always look at those as super movies also in another way. It was just a matter of time for the rest of the world to catch up."

"I’ve been a comic book fan my whole life," Jackson revealed, "so I knew there was an appetite for movies about the things that we read that had a space for those particular characters that we loved in those comic books to be realised in a real kind of way for us. So I’m not surprised by the success of them. I’m more surprised by the not success of some of the others."

That's clearly a reference to the struggles the DC Extended Universe has gone through in recent years but thing are obviously changing now that Aquaman grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

I might be a little late to the party in regards to seeing Glass since I'm going to Austin this weekend and might not have time to see it there, but I'll definitely see it when I get back.

And speaking of Samuel L. Jackson, I'm currently sitting through what might be THE worst movie of 2018, and he's in it.

@InsaneCipher - This movie might've ruined Bob Dylan for me.

That movie might’ve ruined Oscar Isaac for me. What a self indulgent pile of shit that movie is. I turned it off a few minutes after Isaac had the nerve to blow his head off

His character was insufferable.

@InsaneCipher

Yeah, hope he has a good movie out soon. I guess he had Annihilation this year and that was awesome. Operation Finale was alright, I think. Kind of forgettable.

I think most superhero movies are too hard trying in the worldbuilding aspect because everything has to be shared universe nowadays. Wonder Woman and Aquaman both allmost didn’t have any and instead focused on the character and their story, I think that’s one of the reasons why those work and Dawn if Justice and Justice League didn’t.

@MalseMarcel - except that aquaman had almost as many foaws asnjl and bvs did in storytelling and characters.

Its just that it was saved by the setpieces and the lighthearted tone.

In terms of writing its on par with the usual dceu problems.

Set aside the Marvel/DC bullshit, it's a complete travesty what's happened to the X-Men and Fantastic Four. Sure Deadpool is alright, even though Fox didn't even want to make the damn thing.

I just looked up their last box office gross, and apparently some animated movie about a singing pig that I've never even heard of outgrossed Apocalypse. What a [frick]ing shitshow.
